3. Figure out the path of what we want to do at QB for the future and execute.
4. Beef up the DL.

Yes we're over the cap and yes our DL is aging but... it's still a very talented team. We actually do not need to do a complete reset, we just need to be smarter in the moves we make and how we make them. We're realistically not competing for the Lombardi next year but we can still play good competitive football and hope to get lucky. It is very important we don't get shortsighted and plan accordingly. 2024 will be the big year for the future of our franchise IMO unless we somehow land a big name at quarterback for next season.

All things considered, it really wasn't that bad of a year with all the injuries and the patchwork play at quarterback.
Getting maximum compensation for Payton isn't as straight forward as it seems. It comes down to where Payton wants to go. The more a team is willing to give up for him in draft capital the less Payton would have at his disposal when he gets there. His final destination is solely his decision. The Saints just aren't in that much of a position to make demands.

As for cap, there's actually well over $100 million available of easily convertible cap in base salaries, roster and workout bonuses.

It's not my concern on how it gets done or the variables that comes with it. These are just things that should happen.

For anyone who feels we did not make good use of our 2023 1st round pick just check this out. Ahead of Cooper Kupp and one slot behind Stefon Diggs.

I am getting the feeling that Winston will be in the Saints picture again next season along with another Saints player that has played 10 games over the past three seasons.

Cool. Whatever people may think of him, he's really matured as a person.

Playing injured, subsequent benching, etc.

Just a confusing set of circumstances as it relates to JW.

I still think he's gone in 2023.

If he wasn't already under contract for 2023 I might agree, but he carries a $11.4 million cap hit if released or traded and has a base salary that can be restructured to free up over $9 million in 2023 cap alone. He's well respected, knows the system, and could be ideal as a bridge QB in case we get lucky and find something in the draft.

I just wonder if there are ramifications if post June 2023 or neaux.

It's too early to tell right this second. Other than for those that have seen that he can't read fast enough to make a decision unless the line can always protect for 20 seconds per play.

Post June 1st just pushes part of the dead money into 2024. Easier on the 2023 cap, but not until after June 1. Still have to be under the cap in the Spring.

POST-6/1 RELEASE
2023 Dead Cap: $2,800,000
2024 Dead Cap: $8,400,000
2023 Cap Savings: $12,800,000

POST-6/1 TRADE
2023 Dead Cap: $2,800,000
2024 Dead Cap: $8,400,000
2023 Cap Savings: $12,800,000

And I really don't think Winston is that bad at making the read or he would have never been drafted in the first place. He can make the read, but just doesn't give up on the big play as quickly as he should at times.
