Oline depth is still bad.

Miller was tackled damn near immediately after getting the handoff.

I feel for Miller, not even Adrian Peterson in his prime could break away at the speed our guys let them in the backfield.

Pennings attempt at blocking on that stretch run nearly made me vomit.

Then the hand clap "dangit" they always do afterwards.

My biggest fear is that the OL will miss substantial games and our backups will continue playing like they did last night. There will be some players available at cut down but will they fit the system or be an upgrade to what we already have? I also wonder if we need to trade for a backup OL before the season starts?

I'll assure you that is the biggest fear for all teams. There isn't a team in the league that can lose two or three starters on the offensive line and not suffer a crippling blow to their offense. As someone put it today on NFL Radio, there aren't many backup offensive linemen that can replace a starter in the league today. It was brought up that if they had that ability they'd be a starter elsewhere. That doesn't mean there aren't some decent backups out there, but the vast majority are a huge step down from those 1st stringers they play behind.

This came from discussions of the shoddy performances in the games this week.

I thought that last year the Cowboys drafted a left tackle in the 1st round even though they had a high caliber starter. Then the started got a big injury but luckily they had the 1st rounder to fill in. I am not saying that any teams have 8 starting caliber oline, but I am not sure we can afford for 1 starter to go down, and I worry we have a starter who is at the level of many backups in the league in Peat. Also there is a difference between the dropoff from the starter to a 4th rounder vs a starter to an undrafted player or journeyman bust. Some teams definitely have more depth on oline than we do. Also, some teams have a healthier starting 5 than we do because when one of their starting 5 became very unreliable they cut him, rather than signing him to a 5 year extension to play tricks on the salary cap.

Also, I hope Foskey made the flight home. Airports can be crowded, lots of people to get around and limited time to do it.

Last preseason game should be good for some players.

Some have flashed a little. Let's see them start the game against better quality competition with whatever version of 1st stringers each team plays with to begin the game.

Niko Lalos
Peyton Turner
Jaylon Smith
Alontae Taylor / Lonnie Johnson Jr / Jordan Howden

Jake Haener
Jontre Kirklin / Shaq Davis
Storm Norton / Nick Salvaderi / Max Garcia

... among others.

I hope Haener gets the start (last pre-season game) @ QB, to be honest.

He's been composed & sharp thus far.

Hadn't been mentioned much but my guy Blake Gilikin needs to bring it. A lot of shank punts thus far. Not very consistent.

OMG! Now that's some funny stuff right there. :p Also, I don't necessarily disagree with the rest of your statement.

He’s not fighting for a position on this team, because the Saints have seen enough and know what he brings. His first stint with the Saints was in the 2018 and ’19 seasons. After two years in Carolina, he returned to New Orleans last season. So he’s been in the offense longer than most in the room, which bodes well for him. That touchdown from Derek Carr in the preseason opener against the Chiefs didn’t hurt either.

Interesting take (not fighting for a position) on Kirkwood ^^.

But then again, I don't see him in practice 24/7 like the coaches. More importantly, availability is paramount.

We shall see :bng:

Yep.

Nick Underhill touched on this yesterday, specifically his depth concerns too.

I’m not all that impressed witn Landon Young & Nick S is a rookie.

As for Penning, IMO I think he’s gonna be ok. Just need the reps.

Hopefully our core bunch stays relatively healthy in 2023.

When has that ever happened?
Pennings been in the system a year and even if you count year 1 as a red shirt he's had enough reps to produce like an impact player and show he's worth the pick.
We should just start trading away our first and second round picks for multiple third round picks. We seem to do better there. We need him to be available and dialed in, not a rough project. There's enough incontinuity along the line as it is. Not much room for another weak link.
Hey at least our Oline won't be as bad as the Panthers. You want to see a suckfest, that's it. Young is doomed.

After Ramz and McCoy, it gets dicey.

But yeah, I hear you. These former 1st rounders (Trevor/Ruiz/Peat ) needs to bring it & show consistency. Dougie M (oline coach) will earn that paycheck this season.

Losing Trae Turner could sting.

I did however see a stay that so far Penning hasn't allowed a single pressure and only drawn one penalty so far. That's something.
