Nick Underhill expects the Saints to hire a new offensive coordinator in 2024

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; If they don't make a decision this week then I believe that they must have a bad crush on one of the Super bowl coaches. If not, I guess it will be Chuckie calling plays next year....

Who on the 49ers are we interested in?

Klint Kubiak, passing game coordinator, for one, Danno. Brian Griese, QB coach, as the other. Both were early interviews for the Saints OC position.

I wouldn't be disappointed with either. And neither really has a path for advancement with the 49er's as Kyle Shanahan is OC in addition to being HC and is also the offensive playcaller.

I think the quote below may be the direction the Saints take if they do indeed hire Gruden. Similar to the Ireland position for the organization:
Gruden likely would be an addition to the Saints offensive staff rather than a replacement for offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael or another coach in an existing role, the source said. The Saints made a similar move in 2015 when they added Allen to the staff as a senior defensive assistant while Rob Ryan was defensive coordinator. Allen was promoted into the coordinator’s role 10 months later when Ryan was fired.

On a side note, I just saw that LB Coach Michael Hodges interviewed for D-Coordinator for the Patriots.
Beyond the development aspect of the job, Hodges is a fantastic cultivator of relationships with his players. At just 37 years old, he is a young coach in the league and working with both young and veteran players can therefore be a challenge. Hodges however, has done nothing more but rise to that occasion. Not only has he been excellent working with younger guys but has built a valuable relationship with a veteran player like Davis that has paid dividends for the entire defense.

With the Washington position filled by Quinn and all teams now having head coaches ...

It makes me wonder if the OC/Playcaller is actually a bit more important than the head coach himself when the HC is a defensive coach/troop leader. Thinking Houston and Detroit specifically, and in particular if Bienemy stays with Commanders. I'm starting to believe it - OC > HC! That's why this OC hire is paramount for the Saints.

Defensive talent is awesome in the NFL. Generally speaking, I think it's harder to screw up the defensive playcalling. That said, an adept DC is still valuable.

Offensive playcalling on the other hand - it's a huge variance between being behind the times and stale vs those innovating at the McVay/Reid/Ben Johnson level.

I'm fairly convinced the OC/playcaller is the bigger difference-maker of the two now.

And also ... we probably could've had Vrabel if we had just decided to bid adios to DA

Me thinks the Saints NEXT OC is still participating in post season.

Klint Kubiak.

Again, if you want to compete with the big boys of the NFL, get a YOUNG innovator from the Kyle Shanahan or McVay coaching tree.

But what the hell do I know 🤡 ? I flew jets @ Mach 2 designed by McDonnell Douglass back in the late 90’s.

I've heard recently that one of the perceived strikes against Vrabel is the same as that of Bill O'Brien. They both try to be another Belichick. Vrabel drew no real interest from anyone after he was released by the Titans. There's a few articles out there on it.
