A quick change of the phrasing eliminates confirmation bias. How many great coaches were great players?

How many businesses have you seen fail because someone with talent while working ‘in the business’ didn’t translate to talent working ‘on the business’?

Same goes for leading people. Great motivators are rarely great something else’s and vice versa.

Great leadership can look different. Even in football there is no archetype. Bill Belichick, Tom Osborne, Jimmy Johnson, Tom Landry, etc. are all different from each other. If you can inspire trust and motivate people without being a hypocrite or a liar that's a start.

Very true even what a majority might consider great leadership will not resonate with 100% of the team. Leadership can generally be boiled down to 'hard love'. It has to be unwavering and must come across as coming from a passion for the players.

It can and often however cascade through an organization. I am sure there were more than one player that didn't care for Sean Payton's style but saw Drew as a leader and Drew's respect for Sean bled over.

One of the biggest misunderstandings in the topic is that most people can not differentiate between Inspiration, Motivation, and Leadership. There are some crossover principles but all very different principles.
