Re: Derek Carr Retires

From the article above ...

Surgery was considered an option, as was trying to play through the injury, but Carr told Front Office Sports that he ultimately didn't feel right with either possibility.

"That part was tough because I didn't want to have surgery and just sit there and -- it sounds crazy but -- just take the Saints' money," Carr told Front Office Sports for a story published Wednesday.

"I wouldn't have been able to play if I had the surgery," Carr added. "And then if I tried to play with it, I wasn't near 100%, and so that doesn't help them either. I just felt like it was the right thing to do for myself and for the team."

Carr signed a four-year, $150 million contract with the Saints in 2023. He forfeited his $30 million base salary for the 2025 season due to his retirement, although he did get to keep a $10 million roster bonus for 2025.

With Carr retired, the Saints are now holding a quarterback competition among second-round pick Tyler Shough , Spencer Rattler and Jake Haener . The Saints had known about Carr's injury since March and went through the draft process awaiting clarity on his future.

"He did everything he could," Saints coach Kellen Moore said of Carr last month. "As he's gone through this, he's communicated extremely well. He's worked really hard to put himself in position, and ultimately this was the outcome."

Would have been the right thing to do, to retire as a Raider.

Carr was much better than you guys gave him credit for. The offensive line during his tenure was offensive. He didn't have playmakers in the offense. He was thrown into an impossible situation where no QB would have won. He got beat over and over by defensive lines. I believe that if he were healthy and put on a talented team, he would win. Most people here don't think that. As you see, he had a good heart as well. Most QBs would nickle and dime the **** out of us, but he didn't feel right doing it. His tenure was unfortunate cause he never had an offense around him and stayed hurt, but I believe he truly cared about how the Saints performed and the outcome of the franchise. He got a raw deal from the fan base, as he was turned into our scapegoat, and still, he did everything he could to help the team.

I agree completely, hitta.

I disagree.

Carr made himself unlikeable by screaming at players like Olave, for his own mistakes.

He was constantly pointing fingers elsewhere. He gave credit to Dennis Allen for Darren Rizzi's first win, making wildly outlandish plays like throwing a ball randomly up in the air, on 2nd and 10, vs the chiefs for an interception we never recovered from.

Raiders fans pointed out how bad he was in the red zone and coincidentally that was the same here.

By all accounts, Saints reporter are saying that Carr actually asked for a pay rise before the retirement.

Dude basically got an unbelievable contract because the front office didn't properly plan for life after Brees and made the poor decision to hire Dennis Allen.

Parts of this ring true, but a major portion of the blame has to go to Mickey and DA.

They overpaid for Carr and instantly made him a team captain. They treated him like Brees 2.0 out of the gate, which was unfair for all involved. DA coached and spoke with overt favoritism toward Carr, which hurt Carr's relations with both his teammates and the fans.

If they would've treated Carr similar to the non-descript way that Dalton was handled, a lot of misfortune and animosity could have been avoided. Instead, Mickey/DA put Carr in a situation where he was destined to be viewed in the worst light as problems arose. Only a special leader like Brees or Brady could've navigated all of this. Carr's not that kind of guy, and his interpersonal shortcomings got amplified.

While Drew Brees continues to invest in the greater NOLA area, I don't think we've seen any from Derek Carr. It goes to just how much he really cares. What is it they say... actions speak louder than words?

Mickey and DA?

Remember it was good ole SEAN PAYTON hisself who "Anointed" DA to be his successor. I believe he did everything he could to undermine the franchise who gave him his "Big Break".

Don't forget Payton didn't want to live in New Orleans after seeing what Katrina had left him. He wanted to stay in "BIG D" and commute. Everything he did FOR THE SAINTS left the front office looking backward after he departed and didn't see the cliff he had steered the team toward prior to his "retirement" .

As for all the coaches and former players who went with him. They are now the O in the BRONCO REAR END AKA, Sean PaytOn!

Re: Derek Carr Retires

I’m one of the few that agree that Carr is a very good QB. We saw evidence of it in the first 2 and a half games of last season. Before the O-line fell apart because of injuries, the team and Carr were playing at top-level, including nearly beating the eventual SB champs. This team, even with a JV O-line, was competitive in many games. In fact, if the one-score games go their way, they could have finished the regular season as good as 11-6.
