Re: What are the qualifications to be a "real fan"?
This has been one of the most entertaining posts on the board ... Thanks for starting it --- brought back TONS of memories.
My love for the Saints started at around 4 or 5 years old when on a routine Sunday with my whole family (Aunts, Uncles & Cousins, Siblings, etc) we were sitting around watching football. They all had their team and I was easily persuaded. I would say, "I like the Bears!" and my cousin (or whoever it was that liked the Bears) would say, "You can't ... That's my team." This went on and on, but then a game came on and it was someone playing our beloved Saints ... Honestly at 4 years old you like things for the strangest reason ... I LOVED the colors of the uniform, so I yelled out, "I'm A SAINTS FAN!" That was quickly followed by laughter and everyone yelling out ... "You can have them!" I then remember my cousin handing me a paper sack ... I had no clue why he had done this, but I became some good entertainment, so I put it on my head and danced around ... I was clueless. For me though, when I'm on-board with something ... I'm no-board. Since that moment ... I've never looked back. (That was 28 years ago). I remember my mom ordering me Saints stuff back in the day when you had to mail off for it ... Because I BEGGED her for something SAINTS .. Anything, I just wanted something black and gold. Craig "IRONHEAD" Heyward, Dalton Hiliard, Pat Swilling, Sam Mills, Rickey Jackson, La'Roi Glover, Bobby Herbert ... These are just some of the players I actually remember by name and seeing them play where I was old enough to actually recognize them. In the end though ... I don't care who says they are a fan of this team --- there is enough to go around. There are no limits on the amount of us that can love them ... Does it irritate me that people have suddenly jumped on the bandwagon? Sure, but they'll be gone next time we go 5-11, etc. So, who cares? Those of us who TRULY love them won't leave ... Ever, period dot. The only person I personally know that has been a SAINTS fan since birth is my daughter ... She's 7 weeks old and has NEVER known the SAINTS to be losers. That's special. WHO DAT!!! I'll be at the Superbowl if we go ... No question. |

Re: What are the qualifications to be a "real fan"?
Every time I walk into a sports store here in Houston the walls are covered with Texans and Cowboys, so I politely ask "where is all of the Saints merchandise", or any? I get the same song and dance.... "We just can not keep it on the shelves"...
At that point I reach for my "flag" so i can call "bullsh1t"! And hit them with "intelligence interference" and delay of "real answer". I know in my heart if there was that big of a supply & demand problem here in Houston some brother Coon-Azz would be trucking it here and selling it on the streets. My biggest confusion was when I turned on the TV and saw the Texans playing the Oilers.... What the? How in the hell? LOL |

Re: What are the qualifications to be a "real fan"?
Some chick working in Sears Sunday morning here in Houston from across the store say my saints sweatshirt and asked. "How can you wear that". I looked at her quizzically and asked "excuse me"? She said "they lost".
I walked away with out replying. I bit my lip with out saying what really came to mind. "How can you smile and talk with a set of teeth that looked like either yellow corn or small slices of butter. A real fan walks through a Texas mall the day after we lost to Dallas wearing their saints shirt in pride. |

This dude at the mall, kind of a muscledy black guy with a wife & a baby, who looked like he had just been forced to watch a kid movie, had on a gold Deuce jersey. Well I had on a Saints t-shirt under my hoodie, which I raised kind of "girls-gone-wild" like, and he went nuts! Almost broke my fingers slapping my hand--- and his wife was like, "oh for the love of God, honey..." and my wife was startled at first, and then was like, "ok, more WhoDat'ing, I get it." Of course all the onlookers thought we were fighting. God, I love being a Saints fan. |
