Fact or Fiction: Mark Ingram wants out of New Orleans?

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton and running back Mark Ingram have been forced to deny a report that never existed in the first place.

Payton insisted Monday that the notion of Ingram seeking a trade out of New Orleans was "completely false" and had "zero credibility."

Ingram correctly identified the culprit for the misplaced trade "report" Thursday.

"No, you guys (media) came up with that," Ingram said, via The Times-Picayune. "I've never said that at all. I never asked for it. Don't want it. Like I said, New Orleans is home. I love teammates, love my coaches, love this organization. I'm very grateful to be part of this organization. It's a class organization."

Ingram didn't have to be a supersleuth to nail the media for a rumor it had yet to stop mongering.

The original speculation came from Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com, who wrote Sunday morning that "league sources believe Ingram could" seek a trade in the coming weeks.

As far as "reports" go, there isn't much difference between the innuendo of La Canfora's sources and the deranged musings of the know-it-all on the bar stool next to you. It's purely guesswork based on campfire chatter, dot-connecting or wish-casting.

At no point did La Canfora state that Ingram wanted a change of scenery.

So how does Sunday morning's idle speculation metastasize into Monday afternoon's full-fledged controversy?

Start with the original headline that reads, "Saints' Mark Ingram could be next running back to be traded."

Is it inaccurate? No. The inclusion of the word "could" lets the headline writer off the hook while still accomplishing its goal of drawing eyeballs.

Chris Johnson "could" be the next running back traded as well. That doesn't mean he's dialing up Nashville realtors.

The onus is on NFL news aggregators and bloggers to understand the often subtle difference between speculation and a report.

The former has been the harmless fun-filled fodder of hot stoves leagues for more than a century. The latter is something that Payton and Ingram should have to address -- as long as it's not a flight of fancy.

Lol. Apparently you don't make it over to the political section of the forum much. Plenty of left wing radicals too. We would all do well to leave that sort of talk where it belongs.

If he says he is happy, let him be happy. He said he loves it here, this is his home. Leave it at that. Why do we need to know if its true or not? Why do we need to know who started the rumor? Talking about a "rumor" that doesn't affect someone is only making the "rumor" bigger. If he said it doesn't affect him, why should it affect us? Like he said, the Saints are 3-0, be happy for the team/fans. Stop talking about this and making a mountain out of a mole hill.
This was posted on WWL about the same subject. Kinda agree with this guy.

Just stop talking about it or not even respond to and it will go away. /thread.

I never thought he would ask for a trade. Whatever else the guy's problems are, he is a consummate team player and I'm sure wants to see things through. If he could even get back to that 3.8, 3.9 yards per carry level I think he'd be very much worth keeping around. I do love watching the guy run the ball, when it's working right.

Drew Carey...I mean La Canfora basically pulled some story out of his ass or more precisely chased down a tweet from some wannabe raiders insider catfish who thought the story made sense cause the Giants are shallow at running back. The Richardson trade also sparked a trade rumour fiesta that really needs to f*ck off.

I've been critical of the guy because his performance hasn't inspired anything for me.... that said, I wish he's rush for 1.5 million yards and run us to the Superbowl! I think some people wish bad on they guy which only hurts our team.

If Ingram rocks and rolls, so does our team and that's all I care about. That said, his performance is what I see before my eyes and on paper - it is what it is.

Two things going on is how I see it. One, the obivious; Diversity in his touches are not there and neither is the OL. Second, he runs with no authority/ desire / vision to create something. Its been said here before, that's what a RB does, he makes something happen, even if it's only now and then. With him it's never. Ivory gets that carry on the goaline he either gets in or makes it look like he gave it everything he had. Can anybody honestly say it looks like, yeah, he may be getting stuffed buy it's not for lack of effort? If he's hurt then somebody needs to man up and defend him. If not, then it's on him. No room for someone like that on any NFL team.

Re: Interesting RUMOR: Giants-Saints in Ingram trade talks - RUMOR

So we have to get inventory levels to 30% before a trade is made?!?

There was obviously some serious discussions; but with the OLB situation stabalizing (though not great, yet); the only real concern is the offensive line...

Can't see Ingram moving to a team that would take away a key component to his success there, so it'd have to be for a draft pick...

Re: Fact or Fiction: Mark Ingram wants out of New Orleans?

WoW. Learned some things here...

Beyond that...

When you've got a LINE on the near pylon and you stop abruptly and take a from-dead-run and stop to realign directly to a defender, then are promptly slammed to the ground...

You are a limited-vision-running-back.

or a moron.

If you defend a 1.5 running back after 3 years; you are a moron.

If you two would like to gather your glass of whine, your clutch, and frolic on over to the political area to express your political opinions, that would be great. If you do not care to, that would be great also. Either way, there is an area for that, and instead of running through the no politics zone popping off political conjecture take it where it is supposed to be.

Neither I, nor the other members come to this area to read about Saints football because they want to have to be subjected to your political leanings. I realize your emotionally filled personalities make you prone to political outbursts as if you have mild Tourette Syndrome but this is not the place.

What is quite ironic is that you both exemplified exactly what you spoke out against. Just throwing impetuous comments onto a field where they do not belong.

What I find most interesting is that the quote above flies in the face of all of the "we are damaging Ingram" proponents. It pretty much sounds like he knows the onus for his performance is on him and not our scheme, the way he is used, or the most absurd "Saints destroy Heisman Trophy Running Backs".

And here I thought Saints fans knew better. How soon we forget.

On a side note: I am not pro-Ingram, I am not anti-Ingram, but entirely the opposite (© Luis Echeverria Alvarez), didn't go to Alabama (LSU homer)... but, do some of you really begrudge Ingram that much? On a side note: Healthy discussion usually ends when it is no longer about the player and becomes personal. Repetitious discussion about YPC is akin to repetitious discussions about Jimmy Graham's awesomeness. With nothing new being said should those stop also? Since Graham's awesomeness happens week in and week out, much like Ingram's YPC, it's fair discussion.

But Oak, there is a difference between repetitious discussions and name calling and plain harping about something, borderline hate.

Given the topic, a football team, of course there will be a large degree of repetitiveness in what we discuss, and anything related to the team is fair discussion, but it seems we no longer can talk about something on its own merits, especially when it comes to Ingram.

Look what happened in the thread that got locked: OP expressed an opinion on Robinson's performance, I expressed a different opinion of Robinson's performance, but rather than discuss the merits of Robinson's performance, people kept on throwing Ingram at me, his yards per carry this year, and how many picks the Saints used in the 1st round ot get him... every single response to my posts had Ingram in it.

This begrudging of Ingram reminds me a lot of Ricky Williams. Just like Ingram, Ricky had no say on how many picks the team decided to use on him, but people begrudged him because of it, and because of the number of picks spent on him, he was expected to get 2000 yards every year.

Anyway, my opinion, right? I guess I will continue to steer away from any discussion about Ingram, probably any discussion about RBs, and ignore replies with Ingram in them.

I confess I wouldn't mind trading Ingram in the least. A second and a 4th or 5th rounder would be a good deal. I see the Saints going for a C, a LT, an impact LB and another CB in the draft this year. A first and two seconds could really set us up on the OL and at LB. Then pick up an up and coming CB in the 3rd.
