this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Why won't Ian Rappaport ever report us getting rid of McMahon, Bill Johnson, Vitt or # 39 ??...

Brees is still under guaranteed contract. So cutting him he still hits our cap by like 15 million at the least (I don't have the chart in front of me) and we WON'T EVEN HAVE HIM to play. So he'll still be guaranteed money from us and can pick up a huge contract elsewhere and make double salary. It's stupid.

If we really wanted to get rid of Brees, ask him to restructure, and if not, DON'T resign him after next year. Otherwise, cutting him lose is the stupidest thing we could do. Just sayin'.

We really can't afford a defense because we wasted HUGE cap on flunkies like Byrd and Browner. Byrd is the MOST disturbing for his lack of production vs. what he is paid. Browner is just disturbing in general, but gets paid less than Byrd. It's sad, cutting both would improve our team, but cutting Byrd (at least) is another guaranteed contract that will hit our cap. STUPID!

We should NEVER have let go Roman Harper or Tracy Porter for that matter. Both are productive in the NFL and don't get paid as much as some of our dummies do!

Agreed. I think bringing the coach back is just as important. I understand that I am thinking of 09 when I say this but I don't want to be the team that fires coaches every 2 to 3 years. Every team has to rebuild with Pats maybe being the exception but he will get this turned around.

Brees can still get it done at an elite level for two or three more years if we can get him another receiver to throw to and some help up front.
No sense in getting rid of a franchise QB just because it feels like time for a change from some fans.

Extend his contract like the above poster said.

We can afford a defense. We have more money tied up in defense than we do in offense if you exclude Brees. Loomis got us the money to build a very good defense. The scouting and coaching staff just made poor choices on who to spend that money on.
100%. Brees isn't the problem. He is performing. It's the wasted money on bad defensive choices like Gallete, Browner and Byrd. Re-structuring Brees lets him put more money in the bank immediately and extends that cap hit over 2-3 more years to make it respectable and allow us a rebuild. Anyone wanting to see Grayson right now and Brees traded is a crack pot in my opinion. This can be fixed with the right draft and some shrewd FA signings.

If he would restructure over 5 years and play say 2 more years and the retire. What would happen then? Would there be a cap hit?

Be careful whet you wish for. Y'all just might get it. Why is everyone so quick to get rid of Drew. He's not the problem.
