Don't know on this one ... it will come down to what the Saints do in Free Agency but from what I read on JS, this guy is an immediate impact player. How is the knee rehab coming along? If you read some of Nick Underhill scouting reports, he points how badly we were abused when Ellerbe was out. I mentioned this before on the board but if someone told me that we could have Captain America (Luke Kiechly) but he would have to sit a year ... I could care less.

In saying all that, I still want a DE like Robinson at #12 .

Now we will soon find out at the combine what is the deal with the knee.

If the knee checks out I still expect Smith not to be on the field in 2016.

As a results I can see his stock taking a real hit. falling out of the top 20 with a cleared medical would be kind of a shocker.

So if the saints traded down and got additional picks in day two of the draft and ended up with Smith. I would look at it as a cautious win win and a lot of if's and's and but's to wait a year on.

Drafting for the future is probably the smart move, but the clock is ticking on Drew, he won't play forever.

Who is probably going to be red-shirted this season? No thanks. There are plenty of good LB in this draft. Cravens for example and we can probably get him in the 2nd round.

a guresome injury didn't stop Willis McGahee from being picked in the first. Look when it comes to Smith, he's the top LB in the draft and I've heard he compares to Patrick Willis and Luke Kechley BUT yeah let's pass on him because he will miss one season. I'd take one season on IR for 10-15 years of watching a dominate player on defense

I love the kid, but nerve damage isn't something to chance. Especially when we need to make a definitive splash in the first round.

Some analyst have JS dropping out of the 2nd rd, possibly early 3rd (similar to RB Marcus Lattimore).

Frankly I can't see it but if he can heal back to 100%, he is going to improve someones defense, quick, fast and in a hurry.

If he drops out of the First Round the by all means take a chance on him. But if he's there at #12, then you have to pass.

Normally I agree. But we're in a 2 or 3 year window with Brees so I have no problem passing on a project for a more NFL ready prospect.

I'm all about drafting for 2 or 3 years down the road, but the whole nerve damage thing is inordinately risky. If we had some extra picks, and were already stocked with talent on defense then sure, I'd crawl over broken glass to pick him n the 2nd.

I just don't think its wise with our current situation. We have a lot of young players on defense that may develop very nicely. Do you give up on them to draft a risky feast or famine player?
