Corey has been racking up the travel miles this year. San Fran Cleveland and the jets. FA 2017

Both are square pegs in round holes of a 3 defense. Both were 43 DE in college. Jones went to OLB and Corey packed on the weight and stayed at DE in 34.

Prove it one year contract for both and see what happens back as a 43 DE. might help in getting a solid rotation at the least on the cheap

A.J. is my #1 breakout/risk player in FA. I truly think he is ready to become a solid starter. At the very least he can play all 3 positions at a high level and offers flexibility the saints need at LB till the holes can be plugged. I think he will be part of the solution.

I can agree about the rush being better but looking at the whole season or half the season it's still missing the pressure needed to put them up there in the good catagory. I may be the minority here but another good NT to go along with Davison and I think our interior is set possibly for years. I think with this move alone improves the unit as a whole. Adding a MLB like Klein and bringing back Anthony to the middle should shore up that position, Ellerbe and Stupar are fine, Robertson slides back outside and draft a stud OLB would be perfect at how I look at it. I still think getting rid of Kruger would be a huge mistake. I'm all in for trading Vaccarro, drafting another SS to plug in from day 1 and use that pick on a CB. I pick up a CB in FA and the draft, I also resign Moore, he played well in my opionion he's not made of glass like the rest of them. I highly doubt it goes this way, but hey, I'm still trying to fix this 28th ranked D the best I can?

I dont know who we should get, but we should try to dominate both lines of scrimmage. However we can be most successful doing that is what is best

I'd pass on Shields. Another Swann (multiple concussions) case.

There are better options out there.

You know another guy I'm hearing may be made available is CB Dre Kirkpatrick?

From reading some of the interviews from Dre', it wouldn't surprise me if he took a discount and stays put in Cincy.

I still like Trumaine Johnson, Logan Ryan and of course AJ Bouye.

I can see Bouye getting a non-exclusive tag, he had a great season. One.

Now is Ryan the same corner outside the Pats system, front seven? Legit Question.

Johnson is intriguing, but at what cost? If Saints target a FA CB, Trumaine's probably it...

Payton really made effort to get a taller CB for matchups, enter Kirkpatrick as FA option...

Some veteran leadership in the backfield would be nice. All of the glass cb.'s we have might learn a thing or 2. Maybe how to turn their heads around for one.

I literally have no idea what's happening, I haven't seen a Saints CB turn to look for the ball since 2009 when Porter tipped the dolphins QB's pass to Sharper.

Hasn't Shields been plagued by concussions? Word is that's why he was released. The last thing we need is yet another hospital ward corner.

Unfortunately yes. Stephen Gilmore is another CB in free agency but he apparently wants 14 mil a year.

That isn't gonna cut it. The Saints signed Browner and James Laurinitus  (both brought in for veteran leadership). How did that turn out?

This team needs play makers and ball hawks. You know..dawgs. It's time to win and get back into post season play.

Adding a guard and a CB are the most pressing needs. Not real keen on adding free agent DE they cost so much and good ones rarely get away unless they are a problem. Adding a LB at a reasonable price would be good.

I agree we need playmakers and we need ball hawks, with that being said who do we actually have on the secondary that does this now? Browner and Laurintis were done, bad decisions, one on Ryan the other on Allen. Then there was a time we signed a veteran(Sharper) for the backfield (Allen owes him for jumpstarting his career in my opionion) and we all know how that turned out? Veteran leadership can go a long way in helping younger players.

Recent super bowl history tells us that spending money on big time FAs can put you over the top. Denver got obliterated by Seattle, signs big FAs on day one and win it all two years later.

What I'm getting at is it's who you spend it on that matters.

Not to mention signing the best DC in the game, Wade Phillips.

Denver would have won that Super Bowl with Ryan Leaf at QB entirely because of their defense.

Unfortunately, I don't have faith that SP knows how to fix this mess, besides 2009, 2010 and 2013 the defense has been awful and he can't seem to find a long term fix.

I agree, the square pegs in round holes really never work. A great DC though helps remedy some of the aches and pains.

I don't think there's any way in hell that Dont'a Hightower hits free agency, but I just saw this...

NFL Rumors

Dont'a Hightower is expected to hit free agency. - Tom Curran, CSN NE

Tom Curran reports that there have been no significant talks between the Patriots and Hightower, who happens to be listed atop the NFL Free Agent Inside Linebacker Rankings. -Walter

Re: 2017 Free Agency thread anyone?

lesson learned?

Spend when you are ready to honestly make a run at the super bowl. Right now we are at the point we need to flood camp with as many players as we can to upgrade across the board. That is the Patriots way. Save some cap for next year just in case you strike gold this year to add the few missing pieces next year. First thing is first is to win this division

this teams needs way to many upgrades across the board to make the kind of impact this defense needs.

My boring FA rankings
Level 1 - DT/RG
Level 2 - LB/DE/RT
Level 3 - Special teams/WR

Draft is loaded at many positions that can fill our needs list. As many players needed I hope the saints go with a get more picks going into this draft. I always want more picks and have been looking at 2017 forward to 2017 for a few years now. This is one of the reasons I was so against trading up for Bell and then trading yet again David Onyemata, which did not get to many as much as the Bell trade. The 5th rounder in this draft is looking mighty good. Oh well Bell can salvage this by becoming a starting FS. After last year I have to say he will need the length of that rookie contract to do it. ranting once again sorry

Seriously! We don't need a running back and we don't need an undersized trick safety! Especially on a team that's lacking what's listed on Hagan's list.

We wouldn't be able to field a football team if we approached it like that though because I'm sure 75% of our team feels the same way as Hightower.

Ironic, isn't it?

Since the mid-1960s many have marched, demonstrated for people of color to be treated fairly such as being able to stay in the same hotel as teammates, enjoy the same perks as teammates (i.e. White House Guests)...

And now mis-guided as it may be, people of color don't want to go to the White House...

I rather add to the list than subtract from the list with the FA money we have.

Going after a year wonder with a history of inconsistency and over paying them does not thrill me. Pass on Melvin Ingram please. We need more than one piece on this defense

Back to my rule of thumb.

Young - Proven - Solid - A back up that appears to be ready to step out and take over as a starter.

Micah Hyde (26) / 6'0' / 197 / Iowa / 2013 / Rd. 5 (159) / GB

He is a dependable player who offers versatility. Hyde is capable of playing both free and strong safety. Hyde has showcased consistent football despite being trapped in a rotation with HaHa Clinton-Dix and Morgan Burnett in his tenure with the Packers

Hyde has racked up 227 tackles, 24 passes defensed, eight interceptions and four sacks in 63 career games. In addition, Hyde has punt return capabilities, recording three touchdowns throughout his career.

he’ll most likely be searching for a starting opportunity.

He offers an out of that god awful Bird brain contract? Solid gamble IMO

Special team punt returner is a huge need to boot.
