2017 Free Agency thread anyone?

Might as well look forward to free agency...

I have a few names id love the Saints to target. Feel free to post names of players you have in mind. Not sure if theres a thread for this already, if so i apologize

Re: 2017 Free Agency thread anyone?

OG Kevin Zeitler & CB Trumaine Johnson are the two obvious choices at the top of the list

Would be nice to throw Kiko Alonso in the mix. Price would need to be right considering the injury history

Have I mentioned RG Kevin Zeitler?

He's the must-have free agent for the Saints...

Hagan and I talked about this on another thread...

I'd love to have the guy, but he's a restricted free agent, so there's that...

Hagan feels like we have enough linebackers missing time - fair enough...

I say, at the very least, get a real linebackers coach in here...

Vitt has no more excuses, we spent a first round pick on a terrfic talent - who's regressed and all of a sudden has no instincts...BS

With everyone healthy this is who we have under contract, now...

SLB (2) 44 - Hau'oli Kikaha, 42 - Travis Feeney

MLB (2) 50 - Stephone Anthony, 52 - Craig Robertson

WLB (2) 59 - Dannell Ellerbe, 54 - Nate Stupar

So unless we start moving Kikaha and Anthony to 3-4 teams - we're looking pretty good right now, already...

Melvin Ingram. We need pass rushers badly.

Kikaha was moved to DE last year, although could be moved back.

Anthony isn't starting over Robertson... Ever.

Depth at CB
Resign Big Nick
Draft a starting DE
OG is a must

I am still beating the drum for

A.J. Klein MLB Carolina 25 / 6'1' / 240 / 2013 / Rd. 5 (148) / CAR

I really think he is ready to be a starter. He is trapped behind some good LB in Carolina and when ever he gets on the field he produces. He is smart and can play all 3 LB positions to boot. So if the IR bug strikes he allows you flexibility. No IR history either. He has proven the media draft scouts wrong about his skill set.

He is an UFA to boot.

Sneaky cheap signing that has a great shot at paying off big time.

my gut says

Mike Glennon QB Tampa Bay 26 / /6'6' / 225 / 2013 / Rd. 3 (73) / TB

will end up a saints

Want to roll the dice with a cheap short term prove it contracts on players that switching back to a 43 DE after failing the switch to 34 OLB.

Both should have a solid shot at being situational pass rushers.

Corey Lemonier DE/OLB Cleveland Browns 24 / 6'3' / 255 / 4.60 / 2013 / Rd. 3 (88) / SF

Jarvis Jones DE/OLB Pittsburgh 26 / 6'3' / 248 / 4.90 / 2013 / Rd. 1 (17)

All should be cheap.

Glennon could be high demand on the open market.

Ronald Leary, Guard, Dallas Cowboys
Morris Claiborne, CB, Dallas Cowboys
Trumaine Johnson, CB, L.A. Rams
Donta Hightower, OLB, New England Patriots
Charles Johnson, DE, Carolina Panthers
T.J. Lang, Guard, GB Packers
Martellus Bennett, TE, New England Patriots
Stephone Gilmore, CB, Buffalo Bills

There's a lot of quality out there next year.

I have been running a lot of mock draft sims. It seems to me that we have to
get a guard and cb help in free agency. Pass rushers are too expensive in FA.
Jahri Evans was a blessing this season . I think it would be unwise to count heavly on his returning next season. If there is a starting CB available at a reasonable price that would be good move also IMHO.

Rez,

I like everyone on your list with the exception of Mo C. The Cows faithful up this way have officially labeled him as a bust. He is very injury prone and would probably be no better than what we already have at corner.

Anyhow, here is my short list ...

Nick Fairley - hopefully the Saints re sign him ...
Stephone Gilmore - CB
Kevin Zietler - G (go BIG)
AJ Bouye - CB
Melvin Ingram - LB

Draft the best pass rusher available. I mean a guy who strikes fear to opposing offenses coming off the edge.

Other notable players I like coming out of college:

Derek Barnett : DE (Tennessee)
Tim Williams : LB (Baton Rouge kid -Alabama stud) can play 4-3
Tre'Davious White : CB - LSU (no homer here, the kid is dynamic)
Zach Cunningham : LB - Vanderbilt. IMO he is the best coverage LB coming out of college.

Re: 2017 Free Agency thread anyone?

Jason Pierre-Paul DE 28
Pierre Garcon WR 30
T.J. Lang G 29
Chris Baker DE 29 (this guy impressed me every time I watched redskins games)
Morris Claiborne CB 26
Dontari Poe DT 26
Ron Leary G 27
Dre Kirkpatrick CB 27
Melvin Ingram OLB 27
Chandler Jones OLB 26
Dont'a Hightower ILB 26
Kevin Zeitler G 26
Cordarrelle Patterson WR 25
A.J. Bouye CB 25
Zach Brown ILB 27
Kawann Short DT 27
Jamie Collins OLB 26

I would love for the Saints to take a look at EJ Manuel. I thought he was great coming out of college but got to a crappy situation in Buffalo that stunted his development. I think working with Payton and Brees could really bring him along.

There's a lot of quality out there next year.

For me, we've got a great pair of CB with Del Breaux and P.J. Williams, bring back Sterling Moore as the nickel and with Crawley and Harris coming back - we're there; besides you're gonna need cap space to extend these guys contracts soon...

Simply, we've got better CBs on our roster already...

To me the FA money on defense would be better spent on the front seven, decreasing the exposure time of the secondary...

Leary will live in the hot tub once he gets paid based on his time already and this is the most he's been available in this his contract year; he's benefitted playing with All-Pros on either side of him; RL will already be 28 and you'll have to contract him through till his 32, bad deal and don't trust him...

T.J. Lang will be thirty years old next season.

Definitely need a younger, impact option at Right Guard and Kevin Zeitler is the answer; No. 4 rated OG who could have a higher ceiling on the Saints offense vs the Bengals; think of the impact he'd have between Unger and Strief; have seen a playes where Cincy RBs have rode him to the end zone from 5-8 yds out the past few seasons; he's a gamer and be worth every penny...

Martellus Bennett is a big mouth who's inconsistent and would cause disharmony in the locker room. Look at the sh*t Cooks caused for asking for the ball - think of what Bennett would be like - NO THANKS. But you're right, Fleener is gonna cut it...

Charles Johnson's game is no where near what it was; he was cut and re-signed to a one year deal and he'll be 31 next season - Draft a younger, faster, stronger DE...

I am not arguing to spend big on a CB in Free Agency, but PJ Williams has been in the field for like 1.5 games in 2 years. Yes he had potential, but no idea how long he can remain on the field.

I have no idea what we have in Breaux any longer, he didn't seem very good after coming back from injury. Hope that was timing from being off and then a new injury, hope he can get back to what we had before that, but right now we have very suspect CB's, again. Glad Kenny served his four game suspension.

Spike, Brother wipe your eyes and realized the freakish sh*t that happened!

Beaux came back despite multiple injuries and yet still gamed it up...

I mean, damn, PJ Williams essentially got kicked in the head by a horse!

And don't forget Sterling Moore fell into our laps...

Plus you've got two really good rookies in Crawley and Harris who just need playing time for seasoning...

And if you're gonna spend, don't do it like they do in MLB and say, okay we'll take the fifth best FA and pro rate that amount of money based on the market...

None of the FA CBs there are as good as we already have...

Kikaha kind of scares me. He has already had 3 major surgeries on his knees and has only played a hand full of games his first year. Just don't know if he's gonna stay healthy enough to even take up a roster spot 2 years down the road. I would have a legit contengency plane

Need to get Terrelle Pryor. Keep him as a WR4, returner and backup QB.
He's likely a good WR3, probably could beat out Snead. High dollar but would save coin long term.

Pryor will probably get paid like a #1 and I don't believe for one second that the Browns will let him go. He has been one of very few bright spots for them this year.

I would argue against FA CB for the most part based on the CB in the draft with solid builds. just to name a few

Marlon Humphrey CB/FS Alabama 6005 196 4.49 #26 rSo
Quincy Wilson CB/FS Florida 6012 211 4.54 #6 Jr
Cordrea Tankersley CB/FS Clemson 6002 195 4.48 #25
Gareon Conley CB OSU 6002 195 4.50 #8 rJr
Tre'Davious White, CB, LSU 5111 191 4.48 Jr
Brandon Facyson CB Virginia Tech 6011 191 4.52 #31 Jr
Chidobe Awuzie CB Colorado 5113 205 4.56 #4 Sr
Rasul Douglas CB West Virginia:6012 208 4.56 #13 rSr
Fabian Moreau CB UCLA 5115 200 4.52 #10 rSr
Treston Decoud CB Oregon State 6020 4.54 208 #14 Sr

I would not mind the saints using multiple picks on the secondary players.

Shame to waste to much on defense that no matter what will still be going through growing pain.

I heard Wade Phillips was a free agent. I realize all the 3-4 vs 4-3 stuff, but the rest is just **** all until Sean files for divorce from all his sister wives and gets some decent people on the coaching staff.

If you need any more proof look at what Spags is doing with the Giants. WTF? If the defensive coordinator fails here and then soars elsewhere, it's gotta be his untouchable underlings.

Re: 2017 Free Agency thread anyone?

Seeing a lot of posts about us being fine with CB depth... I disagree.

Your top 3 CBs are essentially starting in the current NFL, Moore is not a starting caliber CB. Not to mention if we take 1 injury to the top 3 we are sunk. We do have some depth beyond that but most of our CBs seem to be injury prone. I strongly believe we need to draft/sign a solid #2 CB and put PJ at the #3 CB spot.

No one in the NFL (and that includes Seattle's Sherman) was more effective against Julio Jones and Mike Evans than Sterling Moore this year...

Totally disagree on Spags.

Refresher quiz for you: What was the only team worse in total defense last year than the Saints??

The G-men spent a TON of money this off season.... Jenoris Jenkins, Vernon, "Snacks" Harrison, Landon Collins (solid draft selection). Every last one of these guys are all impact players at their respective position. Giants have 2 CBs that would both be considered the #1 CB for the Saints. They probably have more defensive talent than any team in the league this season.

Safe to say, it's a lot easier for Spaggs to shine with that group on D.

I have never been comfortable with Breaux as a starter. I like his story but it like we are banking on him being a number one based on his rookie year. Next to Browner anyone would look good. Breaux drew a lot of penalties last year and his play did drop off towards the end of the year.

I have no idea why anyone would have any faith in Breaux as a number one. Maybe he can be, but I wouldnt go around thinking we have that side of the field taken care of. Still a lot of unknown surrounding him. We need immediete help on offensive line, and definitely a proven pass rusher.

PJ Williams missed his entire rookie season due to injury and played 1.5 games this year before the same. Are you kidding me? I hope it doesn't happen again, but **** man that's far too frequently.

Breaux had the broken leg, what other injuries happened? I mean he went to IR, but I didn't know of anything besides those 2

Big ticket and a bit of a head case does not equal a Pats player nor should it for the saints

JABAAL SHEARD, DEFENSIVE END, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
75% chance he will stay a Pat

A.J. BOUYE, CORNERBACK, HOUSTON TEXANS
My gut says he will get a huge contract on the open market

KEVIN ZEITLER, OFFENSIVE GUARD, CINCINNATI BENGALS
Bingo.

DONT’A HIGHTOWER, INSIDE LINEBACKER, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
When healthy is a huge factor

MELVIN INGRAM, OUTSIDE LINEBACKER / EDGE RUSHER, SAN DIEGO CHARGERS
Edge rusher sure. OLB? not so sure. over pricing a one trick pony is not what this defense needs.

ZACH BROWN, INSIDE LINEBACKER, BUFFALO BILLS
Interesting player I over looked him

BRIAN WINTERS, OFFENSIVE RIGHT GUARD, NEW YORK JETS
Bit of a injury history but a solid player

BARKEVIOUS MINGO, OUTSIDE LINEBACKER / EDGE RUSHER, NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
He could not get it going with the pats. back up player at the best.

T.J. LANG, OFFENSIVE GUARD, GREEN BAY PACKERS
Bit long in the tooth and injuries are becoming common place.

A.J. KLEIN, MIDDLE LINEBACKER, CAROLINA PANTHERS
My pick jack of all trades and mastering them all

TRUMAINE JOHNSON, CORNERBACK, LOS ANGELES RAMS
Too much money

I'll be surprised if the Saints FO pay top dollar (his agent will command) for a LB given all the other things we need.

I'd prefer they add more players like Craig Robertson type ability to ensure depth in addition to drafting a guy.

Side note: I recall reading an article that claims Jamie doesn't truly love football anymore and the passion is gone. Chandler Jones and Jamie made comments that they play Madden during their downtime. Next thing we see is Jamie shipped to Cleveland and Chandler to AZ.

I'd be careful here ...

Re: 2017 Free Agency thread anyone?

I hope we go back to addressing holes with the 2nd tier guys in free agency (and late round trades) like we did with Jabari Greer, Keenan Lewis, Fujita, Dave Thomas, Ben Watson, Darren Shraper, Hargrove, Joe Horn, Heath Evans, Robertson, Goodwin etc...

Enough of the high dollar splash signings. Fill holes with adequate guys, draft well, and if an occasional stud becomes available via trade or free agency (Vilma, Brees etc) then make that plunge.
