2017 Draft Day 2 - Rounds 2 and 3

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Urban Meyer isn't the only coach or program who puts out players. There are other top programs who put out just as many, and more, and with higher rates of pro success than Ohio State. I don't have hate for ...

It just gets weird when better prospects are often passed on to feed the seeming infatuation of getting OSU players. I like Lattimore a lot. But Hassan Reddick would have been dymamite, and even Reuben Foster, despite my concerns of future failed drug tests (I know it isn't confirmed that his diluted sample was intentional, but I doubt it wasn't).

It is what it is, though. At least they got a good player.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

Re: Day 2:

What about this guy with one of our picks today:

Derek Rivers, DE/OLB, Youngstown State
Height: 6-4. Weight: 248. Arm: 32.75.
40 Time: 4.61.
Projected Round (2017): 2-4.
4/26/17: Rivers ran fast at the combine and showed some athleticism. As a senior, he totaled 58 tackles with 19.5 tackles for a loss, 14 sacks, one forced fumble and one pass batted. Rivers showed his pass-rush skills with eight sacks as a junior and 13 as a sophomore. He could end up being a second-day pick.
Danno and K Major like this.

I don't think that was the case with Lattimore. He was projected as high as 5th overall to the Titans. Many had him rated as one of the top 5 players in this entire draft class. Most people didn't even expect him to fall to us. I think another gift fell to us just like Sheldon Rankins, who didn't have injury issues, but ended up injured anyway.

I'm well aware of how highly projected Lattimore was, and I have said at every mention that I like him. I just think there were dynamic play makers, up front, who would seem to be a higher priority. Best player available is always the cop out response, I know, but if we're honest with ourselves we should have learned by now that the back end of your defense can only do so much if they have to cover all day, or if we are getting gashed in the run game.

We have some really good D-linemen, but we lack enough true pass rushers, and we really are hurting for depth up front.

All that said, again, I like Lattimore and think he'll be very good.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

The front office is probably just comfortable with the depth of the draft at LB and pass rushers. There's a lot of quality players left at both positions to where we can address all needs. We'll just have to see what they do with these picks. I wouldn't be mad at another corner though, especially if it was Sidney Jones or Kevin King.

That may be their opinion, but there is a distinct difference between depth, and high end talent. I agree that this is a deep draft. But you really want to hit on your early picks, no matter how deep the draft is. I wouldn't call Lattimore a miss. Just thought he would have been a lower priority.

It's a free country, I'm just giving my two cents. It's not like we can change anything. The OT pick didn't excite me, simply because OT's are never exciting. But after all the guys I wanted at 32 got gobbled up in a matter of minutes, I didn't have a problem with that pick.

Urban will soon surpass Les in his recruiting and of and having more pro ready players in the draft. LSU will soon be in second place in having the most former players in the NFL. As far as the Saints passing up better prospects in order to draft tOSU players? (Reddick vs Lattimore?) That's just spurious.

Where do you get this erroneous information? LSU continues to put out talent every year. That didn't suddenly stop. I didn't even mention LSU. I know you are a notorious LSU basher, though, so I'm not surprised at your biased rants.

There are programs, LSU included, who produce more starters than Ohio State. There are programs like Florida who put out a bunch of draft picks, but have a terrible success rate. Ohio State is somewhere in the middle.

And I didn't compare Lattimore to Reddick. I simply said that guys like him or Foster would have been more dynamic, or perhaps "impactful" would be a better term, as they would address dire needs.

I don't think our secondary was that far off. They need to stay healthy (surprisingly, so does Lattimore. How about that?), but other than that, they just need help up front.

I more consider myself an LSU fan conspiracy theorist chain yanker. I don't care where they do or don't come from. Once they're a Saint, they're okay in my book. Unless of course they aren't and should be cut.
