Hot Seat?

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Drew Brees is tired of losing. He will only play on a one year deal because he wants to keep his options open if the team doesn't become a winner again. He is allowing himself the opportunity to move on ...

Drew Brees is tired of losing. He will only play on a one year deal because he wants to keep his options open if the team doesn't become a winner again. He is allowing himself the opportunity to move on if he doesn't like the out come again this year.

Drew doesn't ever criticize anyone publicly. But he is a savvy business man and takes care of his business behind closed doors while keeping a squeaky clean image. It is obvious to me that he's letting the organization know that he's tired of wasting his talents and we have to return to our winning ways.

Payton is one heck of a coach but he sucks at selecting defensive coaching and talent.....it's his Achilles heel.

Also, he's been tied to one of the best bean counters in the league who will make it happen rather than reigning in Payton's wild side. Ireland has been a God send but he's not the General Manager and final decision maker. Loomis doesn't necessarily know football or basketball but he knows accounting.

I've watched closely the relationship between Drew and Sean for about a decade. I've seen the mutual respect between the two evolve into a loving relationship that benefits both greatly. Drew and Sean are tied at the hip. However, like any relationship, it can go south with unrealistic out side pressures and bad decision making. Although winning fixes almost everything. Who Dat!

First of all, that is not the reason Brees is playing on year to year contracts. He and his agent are using the same philosophy that Peyton Manning (same agent, by the way) used over the last several years of his career. He said he doesn't want the team to be tied down to a long term deal whenever he does decide to call it quits for good.

And on that other item, it's funny that you point out that relationship between Payton and Brees. The Dude says totally the opposite, he claims (with no support whatsover and thus proving he is making more crap up) that Brees and Payton are basically at each others throats, jawing at each other on the sidelines on at least THREE distinct occasions.

Now, Rugby, are you totally wrong about the relationship between Brees and Payton or is The Dude?

I'm not agreeing with anybody about anything......I'm an antagonist.

However, I do believe that Drew is playing his cards close to his vest and like Peyton is leaving himself options to act if he doesn't like the team results.

Yes. Yes my friend. I get that Drew is also not trying to strap the team when he hangs up his cleats, but like most things in life(and chess) there are often several benefits from one move.

I don't doubt that Drew would leave if the team is in Shambles. The FO has made several nice moves and we are moving in the right direction especially after another strong draft.

Sean Payton and Drew Brees has been described like a marriage made in heave......but like any marriage it has it's ups and downs and the couple can get overly familiar while needing time away and space because they don't see things the same all the time.

Edit: We need to remember that Payton Manning left the Colts for greener pastures.

Not quite. Peyton Manning was released by the Colts on March 7, 2012 because they were drafting what they felt like was their new Savior. He was kicked to the curb and told to have fun finding his greener pasture. He did have the last laugh, however.

Re: Hot Seat?

I think Payton has to be on the hot seat if we don't atleast make the playoffs this year.

That would be 4 straight non playoff seasons, I really hope to god the staff changes that Payton has made pay off, but if they don't, Payton needs to held accountable.

This has been pointed out on several occasions by several members here, the dynamics of Benson/Loomis/Payton cannot be compared to what might happen in your average NFL hierarchy. The only person that can fire Payton is Benson and the Bensons love him like a son. The Bensons got their Lombardi before he died. If Benson lives to be 100 and every year is 7-9 Payton will remain coach as long as HE chooses. Tom Benson has a legacy now in the NFL because of Sean Payton. Hell, the stadium at the Pro Football Hall of Fame is now called Tom Benson Field.

If this was any other franchise other than perhaps the Patriots I would agree with you. But, it isn't.

Well the way they have structured it doesn't seem to be paying off for us lately, let's hope that changes this season.
