Personally I think if he does walk you try to eat as much as you can in one year and use the year to rebuild asap to set up long term success. But that's a story for a different thread. The team cannot afford to not be looking at the possibility he doesn't return though.
I know that. You just pasted the scenario where he basically comes out and says he's retiring immediately after the season. Also included in the article is the scenario where he immediately commits to playing another year. I was just pointing out that these two scenarios are very unlikely given what he has said recently (as in the last few weeks). The other scenario addressed what is likely to happen.

"What if Brees is not sure he wants to retire and acts a bit like Brett Favre at the end of his career? One option is to add more void years to the contract, reduce his salary as above, and convert the $23.925 million to an option bonus that is due after the first game of the season. Under that type of contract Brees would count for $17.01 million, a savings of $19.14 million. If Brees does decide to retire the team would get the same savings as in the first scenario since the option would never be exercised. If he plays then you have a lot more dead money to deal with in 2022 but that is the price of Brees returning."

AG, Brees is as competitive as they come. He will always love the game.
As for his level of play, he is and would be next year playing at an elite level.
He's still healthy, despite the injuries received the past two seasons.
Family; I don't think his kids want him to quit yet, there at the ages where they love being part of this ride. His wife I think is neutral.

C'mon Drew, you still got it. I would like to be able to attend at least
one more game LIVE before your done.

I am right there with all of those assessments, gulfgambler.

Drew mentioned that he loves playing the game while his kids are now old enough to see him play . The older the kids get the more they want there dad to keep playing I’m sure.

After one and done in the playoffs Brees is done. The Bears are exactly the sort of team to knock us out yet again.
