Fin, you're likely right. But once made public, do we still condone that behaviour because they're professional athletes? or as a would-be just society, is their accountability?

Like it or not, there are not many role models left in the NFL. Its no longer viewed as privilege to be in the NFL, because as long as you can contribute to a Super Bowl, a lot of the personal stuff gets forgotten by many.

As you said, disturbing.

It’s not like everyone was a Boy Scout back when Brees and Payton were here. People stealing Vicodin, Payton showing up to press conferences coked out of his mind, Sharper, and Bountygate all came under their watch.

Yeah, but none of that was obvious at the time. If we had a warning...maybe things play differently.

Re: Deshaun Watson to Saints?

I hope the Panthers get Watson and pay a kings ransom. I have no interest unless he comes cheap, which it seems like he won't. He has the hat trick of risk factors, a lot of past injuries, legal troubles that could come back again or be a precendent for future legal transgressions, attitude issues and history of holding out, significant time off that could leave him rusty or prone to injury, will require a lot of salary cap allocation, and will require a lot of draft picks to acquire. He could help come absolutely loaded team win in the short term but we are not that team, we have issues on oline and receiver and with out salary cap. The Panthers are not that team either. In general, teams that are not already loaded and don't have tons of free salary cap to load up further need a young low cost QB to win it all. Watson is a giant risk. He has torn both his ACLs in practice in his past history. Could we win a Superbowl with Watson and Michael Thomas? Perhaps. But the odds of them both being on the field to do it are not great when both present the full house of risk factors. Might be more likely they get in a fight with each other over a stripper where one gets charged with a felony and the other sustains a nagging injury.

To your point:

It was November 19, 1966. Michigan State entered the contest 9–0 and ranked No. 2, while Notre Dame entered 8–0 and ranked No. 1. Notre Dame elected not to try for a score on the final series; thus, the game ended in a 10–10 tie.

Bubba Smith, The Baltimore Colts 1967 1st round draft choice and later a star in the Police Academy movie franchise was a senior defensive end for Michigan State.

Prior to his senior year, his hometown American Football League’s Houston Oilers bought Smith an Oldsmobile 98 to get a jump on the bidding war with NFL teams. When Smith showed up on campus with his new wheels, there were rumors a booster paid for it. Coach DuffyDaugherty told Smith to return the car.

Smith was arrested before the big game for having 300 unpaid parking tickets. Amazingly He was out in time to play in the Big Game. Tame by today's standards but things were in 1966.

Nobody actually thinks players behavior is worse now do they? Here’s some excerpts from a New York Times article from June 10, 1982 with former Saints DE Don Reese spilling the beans:

https://www.nytimes.com/1982/06/10/s...se-in-nfl.html

Player Tells of Wide Drug Use in NFL

… Reese says that he used cocaine with many players, and that he and other Saints indulged in free-basing, in which cocaine is heated and the fumes are inhaled...

… But life with the Saints, he said, ''was a horror show.'' ''Players snorted coke in the locker room before games and at halftime,'' he said, ''and stayed up all hours of the night roaming the streets to get more stuff. I know. I was one of them.''

Yea in the 70’s and 80’s can’t cocaine use was rampant among NFL players. It was almost acceptable. At the very least the NFL looked the other way.

Really hoping this doesn't happen. Not just because of the off the field drama, but because of what it would cost.

I don’t like this move. It’s has short term success move like LAR and Denver did. Just resign Jameis and draft guys around him. It’s the cheapest and best option.

Re: Deshaun Watson to Saints?

Keep in mind, free agency essentially starts tomorrow so if we’re in a holding pattern on this potential Watson trade we clearly aren’t going to re-sign Jameis Winston.

We can't re-sign Winston until we have the cap space required. With the Lattimore restructure we are closer, but still need a bit more.

I don’t think we’re going to sign anyone of note this week; especially if we have to have the flexibility to fit Watson’s contract under the cap.

Per Rappaport

The #Saints and #Panthers have made offers for #Texans QB Deshaun Watson and are likely to meet with him soon, sources tell me and @TomPelissero. Other teams also are involved. Watson has a no-trade clause and wants to meet with teams before formally waiving it anywhere.

Even if we wanted to give up what it would take I doubt he would want to come here.

I'd take short term success if it lands the Saints one or even two SB wins rather than having the best record year after year while always falling short.

Again, I'm not a fan of the player nor the individual, but it would be so much fun seeing all the heads exploding around the league and especially the NFC South when they try to figure out how the Saints dug themselves out of "cap hell" and landed a top 5 QB in the free agency.

You think he’d want to go to the Panthers over us??

If the decision is between the Saints and the panties - do you really think it's even a matter of making a decision?!

I highly doubt we are the only two choices. We would definitely his choice if it were only between us and the panties.

So, an NFL player with notoriety and coin, do you want to go out in New York, LA, the ATL, or New Orleans?

If married, Where does your coin in New Orleans?

Where do your kids go to school besides Newman or Sacred Heart?

Can you go and fill up your vehicle without getting car-jacked?

Mayor LaToya the Destroyer and the City Council Fools are running a sh*t-hole and hasn't spent significant resources on the Police Department which barely has 1000 officers...

It ain't easy slamming the city I spent most of my youth, but it is what it is...

True but what we’d have to give up for him, plus his salary is a turn off. But if that’s what we do, I’ll give it a shot.

It could just be a move to drive up the price for the panties without any real intention to trade for him - at least that's a theory they are throwing around on the kittie litter forums.

Although, I don't think they'd make an offer without real intent behind it.

While the criminal case may have come up short, the civil cases are still looming for Watson. He has to appear Tuesday. The chances of discipline by the league is still very possible and has precedent (Roethlisberger and Zeke Elliot).

The Saints are interested. Perhaps not as sold on Jameis as you've been crowing?

Don't worry little speedo, somebody will tweet some insight you can steal. Give it time...

Re: Deshaun Watson to Saints?

I started following the Saints in the late 90s, so most of my fandom has been during the SP/Loomis era (after Ditka and Haslett), but it must be a world of difference to see the Saints now seemingly always being in the mix to land star players for some of you "old-timers."

I for one am glad they are active as a team, and that their owner is willing to spend the money needed for Loomis' annual magic tricks.

I still believe Desean is signing with the Steelers.

I'm really curious to see what the Saints proposed in a trade for DW.

From the article:

With all this in mind: here is the kind of trade package Houston may be looking for:

2022 first round pick (No. 18)
2022 second round pick (No. 49)
2023 first round pick
2024 first round pick
Defensive end Marcus Davenport
Defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson
