Observations from the Saints preseason loss to the Texans

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; * DB play was decent overall, with the exception of the last 2 minutes of the game. I have NO idea what kind of brain fart was happening at that point. * Unknown what the TE situation will look like. ...

* Unknown what the TE situation will look like. Only one toss to Trautman and throws to Vannet being off target sort of muck things up. I hope our Hybrid shows out.

* I pray we put the Book experiment to bed once and for all. He's a NFL 3rd string QB... even if he was playing for the Jags.

* Special Teams looked kinda meh. Disappointing considering how that was a team strength last season.

* Penning needs work. He obviously has size and strength, but his footwork was atrocious and speed rush had him crossed up all night long.

* 'Mmmm-bop' Hansen looked like he's ready to step up.

* Jones looked good as a third option at RB.

Book is developmental. I'm good with Dalton and Hill.

Here is a question I asked last night in the game day chat: Do we keep 3 QBs on the final 53?

IMO Taysom is a far better "emergency" QB than Book will ever be.

Don't be surprised if Coach Allen cuts Ian Book at the close of camp.

So the last chapter has been read on Ian Book? Probably so... Let's give him one more try in the next game.

Isn't next year supposed to be the year at QB in the draft anyways?

If I'm a coach Smash, these are my concerns in general :

Struggles from outside the pocket, and has issues "climbing" up and away from it. Throws have been inaccurate & take unnecessary sacks. He's also short. But that overthrow to Dixon (I believe) led to a pick (and Texans points) & D'jon is at least 6'4. In real games, turnovers turn into L's.

I just don't see him developing much. Probably a nice dude to hang out with, but he's not going to cut at this level of football.

I'm just a couch coach and have been wrong before .

Brother. Professional paid coaches and scouts are wrong more often than right about players. Pennington, Carmazzi, Redman, Martin, Bulger, Winn were all picked before Brady.

Re: Observations from the Saints preseason loss to the Texans

I read an article a couple of years ago about how many times teams have actually had to us a number 3 quarterback or emergency quarterback in a game. Now of course this was before Covid. Has anyone ever seen the likelihood of this happening over the years of NFL games. With that in mind you don’t waste a roster spot on a 3rd QB. If it ever were to get to that point in a game you line up taysom back there who is as good as any 3rd qb you could find.

Zach Baun needs to ice up and get it together.

Did not play last night

If Abram can show more on special teams, he has a shot. He did some good things & seems to be a strong runner. I understand that "punch out" was perfect but you simply cannot fumble. Two hands & secure it.

Side note: I'd like to see what Costello can do under center on next week.

Has Baun even been cleared to practice yet? I thought he was still going through the "ramping up" process.

As for Costello, he'll probably be released as soon as Winston can return to drills. They use three QB's in drills and Hill hasn't been one of them at all.

If you’re going to be a smaller QB like Ian Book you need to be a Drew Brees, Russell Wilson, or Kyler Murray. He ain’t that. Cut ties.
