Sure. And if the Saints don't receive compensation that aligns with his value then they shouldn't release his contract.

They absolutely have that option. But, it all comes down to whether they are willing to just sit on his contract for two more years and get nothing in return, or to accept whatever they can from the team Payton ultimately chooses. That team may not be in the market in the future.

Obviously. So the sense of urgency increases, as should the compensation for his services.

No it doesn't. But it would be shot down by the league if they was any hint that there was some sort of relationship to the coach's transaction. The league office has vetoed Saints trades in the past for less.

Yet, it remains a one on one negotiation. It may end up involving a 1st, but it may not. Or that 1st may not be a 2023 pick. It isn't a contrived "value" that sets the final parameters of the deal. It's actually the other way around. The final parameters of the deal will in the end define the actual value.

I feel the Saints are going to be willing to take whatever they can get in the end. I don't see them refusing to deal with any team outside of the division. Supposedly they have been contacted by five teams and only given three permission to talk with Payton. I'd bet Carolina and Atlanta were the other two.

If you own one of the most valuable assets on the market and you "take whatever you can get", you deserve to lose for a long time.

The market sets the price. If the team that Payton chooses refuses to offer more than a 2nd rounder then that isn't on the Saints. They have limited leverage. What would you propose they do in that instance?

You are assuming there is an open market available to the Saints. There isn't. There is a market for Payton. Payton has the ability to shop around for the best deal. The Saints do not have that option. They are limited to a single customer chosen by Payton.

Unless there is more than one destination SP has interest in.

The team set the price. That's why only some have qualified to interview him.

He's also the best HC available so yeah, they should ask for multiple 1st round picks.

I think Arizona will be willing to give Payton complete control.

As Papa Voodoo stated in an earlier post ... "#giveuspicks"

I agree. They should ask for multiple 1st rounders. It doesn't mean that the other team is ultimately willing to give them what they want. I also believe the reason why others DIDN'T qualify to interview is that under no circumstance did the Saints want him going to them (Panthers and Falcons). I have read others that feel like they'd be willing to take less if he was to go to the AFC. That make sense and I'd have to agree.

One more point on a mention earlier in the thread concerning player trades. Player trades were frozen for the league year on November 1st and remain frozen until after the end of the league year on March 14th. Therefore, the earliest date a player can be traded is March 15th.

Man I’m hoping. I want that #3 and next years first. I think that’s pretty fair for a coach of that caliber.

I'd love for that to be the result. Don't think there's a shot in hell of it, but would definitely love it.

I just can't see that myself. I am holding the best coach to become available in recent memory. The price is the price. Now, I could see where division rivals have to pay MORE, but not conference paying less.

Just repeating what I have heard recently by several former GM's. They have all said he would be totally off-limits to a division rival regardless of price and that they would settle for less out of conference if they were the Saints.

Sean Payton has too much self respect to go to Atlanta or Carolina.

The Saints won't allow an interdivisional trade whether Payton wants it or not. Nor should they.

If Atlanta or Carolina want him and he wanted to go, I'd trade him to either

Caroline
9th pick (1st round)

— Their own second-rounder
— San Francisco's second-rounder
— San Francisco's third-rounder
— Their own fourth-rounder
— San Francisco's fourth-rounder
2024 1st round

Atlanta
Round 1, Pick 8
Round 2, Pick 45
Round 3, Pick 76
Round 4, Pick 110 (from TEN)
Round 4, Pick 113
2024 1st round

The Saints have already denied the Panthers access to Payton.

The Texans and the Cardinals are the two spots where Payton would have the same autonomy that he enjoyed in New Orleans with pretty much full say on personnel.

Imagine SP “tweaking” that offense with Herbert & Lombardi is already there.

Fangio could probably get more out of Bosa & Mack in his 3/4 defense.

Chargers would be a nice spot for Payton.

Terrible loss for Staley though. No way you choke like that in a playoff game up by 27 points. Guess we’ll wait and see if he keeps his job.

One of the key notes I got from it was that Sean said he'd probably make a decision sometime by the end of this month whether he wants any of the positions, and if he does which one. Once again he stressed the importance of having a good working relationship with the ownership and front office above all else.
