Re: What should the Saints’ plan be to upgrade at QB?
I like Jameis Winston. He seems to be a good team player but he is not the future. At least not for Dennis Allen who benched him last year and never put him back in the game. He sounds like a post June 1 cut.

Re: What should the Saints’ plan be to upgrade at QB?
In the 'Options I Really Don't Want' category anyone who can read between the tea leaves may notice that with the Rams cutting Wagner and shopping Ramsey they may be in rebuild mode and this brings up questions about Matt Stafford. If we are stupid enough to have made a top offer for Deshaun Watson and to consider trading for Derek Carr or perhaps offering him upwards of $30 million, it is scary to consider what might happen if Matt Stafford hits the market and we are looking for a consolation prize.
I really hope we draft a young QB without a costly blockbuster trade and try to develop a QB. I don't want the post-Brees Saints to become the post-Manning/Luck Colts and keep convincing themselves a bunch of washed vets have more left in the tank than they do. |

We already have our QB.

Should we?

He hasn't been the same since he married Meghan Markle.

Re: What should the Saints’ plan be to upgrade at QB?
It appears the difficult transition to a new QB is an extremely common occurrence in today's NFL. It doesn't appear to be an isolated Saints dilemma created by the evil Dr. Payton.

Re: What should the Saints’ plan be to upgrade at QB?
If we don't land Carr, ( I could see him here) I would go after Mayfield. If Allen does what he says( running the ball) Mayfield could manage the game. With the WR core we have + draft one or pick another up in FA he would be looking at the best group of core players on the O he has ever had. He can make all the throws. Should come reasonably cheap to boot.

Wentz could be a good addition

Re: What should the Saints’ plan be to upgrade at QB?
We’re not finding the next Brees amongst these kicked to curb QB’s.
If we’re thinking about doing that, I’d rather we roll with Jameis and select Hooker in the 2nd and roll with that plan. |

I'd rather bring Teddy B back if the DCarr signs elsewhere. I wouldn't sign a middle-of-the-pack QB to 35M but that's just me.
Here is the list of available FA QBs for 2023. Carr, Wentz, Mariota, Mayfield, Darnold, Garoppolo, DJones, Rudolph, etc. Full list |

Re: What should the Saints’ plan be to upgrade at QB?
In my mind it's
A. Carr for anything under $35MM/yr + Dalton + draft a Rookie in round 2-3 or B. Dalton + Draft a Rookie you like as early as you want or C. Dalton + Get aggressive for a Rookie in the draft |
Re: What should the Saints’ plan be to upgrade at QB?
Speaking of QBs, I see the Falcons released Marcus Mariotta to save 12M.
If Winston isn't your guy, let him geaux too. |

If we suck worse, we'll be in better position for another QB in the 2024 draft for what is considered a much richer QB draft. If we get lucky with Hooker or some other QB in the draft this year, than it's that much better for us next year. |
Re: What should the Saints’ plan be to upgrade at QB?
If Sean was still coaching, keeping Jameis in 2023 is a no-brainer.
But with Heckle and Jeckle running this team, naw. |
Re: What should the Saints’ plan be to upgrade at QB?
Not even the JETS are considering 35M for DCarr.
Crazy how they just drafted a QB (Wilson), in 1st round of 2021 and are already in the market to replace him. Hoping to find the next Pat Mahomes, Burrow or JAllen is like searching for a needle in a hay stack. |

Glazer: Saints QB Jameis Winston Has 4 Fractures in Back; No Risk of Further Injury ERIN WALSH SEPTEMBER 18, 2022 New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston is set to play Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with four fractures in his back, per Fox's Jay Glazer. Winston is in "a lot of pain" and will be wearing extra padding to protect the area, Glazer added. Jeff Duncan of NOLA.com also noted the veteran signal-caller has been in pain "all week." Winston took a hit in the fourth quarter of a Week 1 win over the Atlanta Falcons and was checked out in the medical tent before returning to the Saints bench. After the game, he said he was in pain. When asked where the pain was, Winston responded: "Just pain. It was pain everywhere." The 28-year-old, who was limited in practice all week, was initially listed for Sunday's matchup as questionable with a back injury. He told reporters Wednesday (h/t ProFootballTalk's Josh Alper) that he was still "getting over some first game soreness." Winston has been riddled by injuries over the last two seasons. |

I believe you are simply mistaken, Smash, about what Winston supposedly admitted recently. Or more likely, the source that you got that totally erroneous information from was wrong. Edit: What might have been being referred to was that the team concealed the fact that it was a back injury from the Falcons during the game after leaving the blue tent. Now that would be accurate and make sense. That's probably where the confusuion lies. |
Re: What should the Saints’ plan be to upgrade at QB?
If Winston stays, I draft McCall
If we get Carr at a reasonable rate I still draft McCall If Winston goes and Carr price tag is to high I go with Mayfield ( should come cheap and still draft McCall. The only high price FA is Carr, I really don't see the downfall going forward. I believe with a really good O line, the WR core+1, add a stud TE and 2 rookie RB's (I could get it done, not really but what the he!!) any of those qb.'s would be good enough to make it happen. |

We still have to fill the offensive guard, safety, defensive tackle, defensive end and shore up the corners. Not to mention we need a quarterback. That's an awful lot to fill in this one draft. Maybe we get another draft like 2017 and can get our salary cap under control. As long as we don't draft defensive end in the first round I'll be fine. Their last few picks have been questionable at best. |

Re: What should the Saints’ plan be to upgrade at QB?
The more I think about it, the more I’m leaning towards passing on Carr and rolling with Winston. We can use that money in FA along with the draft to primarily fill the OL,DL, and RB positions. Also gotta shore up safety as well. I’m not sure Carr with a bunch of rookies and cheap FAs is gonna do much.
