I guess I mainly differ on your idea of Doom and Gloom. I’ve spent many years living in areas where the NFL teams were good and watched them win SBs. But I’ve also watched those teams completely suck, win 3 or less games and be true laughing stocks. Saints haven’t been that poor in many years. People are talking about doom and gloom with a team that had a winning record. I just can’t agree with that point of view. Look at the good/great teams Buffalo put out there and never won. Same with Minnesota. And some have the idea to be critical of this franchise because they “only” won1 championship despite getting shafted by the league once for bounty gate and another by the worst call in NFL history? I don’t see it. Payton and Brees had many 7-9 years then rebounded. When/if the team has a 3 win season and can look for a QB in the top 5 picks then I’ll agree with the sky is falling narrative. But while the team is competing, winning more than they lose, and in the playoff hunt until the last week of the season I’ll be happy to be a Saints fan. Lots of teams are doing way worse. |

Re: Disappointed but not Discouraged
A quarterback is only as good as his o-line. Carr is average at best with an average line, but is capable of being very good (not great) with an above average line. I have been on the draft a qb train but from where we sit in the draft I think we are better off building in the trenches and giving Carr a year with a better line. Maybe with the second or third pick if nix is there grab him and let him sit behind carr a couple of years. I don’t think we will ever win a Super Bowl with carr but I can guarantee we won’t win one without a line. I’m over the doom and gloom of the season. The NFL is built for all teams to win now. (Tampa, Houston, Green Bay). Let’s have a good off-season and get this train moving next season.

I agree but that’s not happening now. Besides new coach or not we still need players for the next guy.

Re: Disappointed but not Discouraged
It was supposed to happen by now, and everybody knows it. Just like everybody knows that even with a great O line, Carr ain’t Brees, or Mahomes, or Jackson, or Purdy, or whoever… the point being, we are WEAK in key leadership positions, which no amount of protection will perfect. We’ve had plenty of time to deal with this, and we’re still weak.

Re: Disappointed but not Discouraged
I think I’m willing to look at shortcomings the team may/do have. I realize I’m not making my living with anything remotely related to the NFL,
So I am no “expert”. That being said, it seems to me that this is an incredibly hard league to win in. Look at a few teams and their end of the year for example. Buffalo. Good QB. Has been solid in the regular season. Won a few playoff games. But they folded again and it brings back memories of the Jim Kelly Bills and a team that NEVER got over the hump. Philly. Another team who seemed to have it going with a talented young QB. But they folded down the stretch again, and could not get the final job done. whether or not they will stay. Competitive time will tell. Minnesota. A team that is beat us multiple times in the playoffs. But they are looking at possibly resigning Kurt cousins or rebuilding, and looking for another quarterback, to start the franchise with This is just a couple of examples. I live up here where New England has just had two terrible seasons in a row, and I wondering where they are going to go from here as a franchise. One of my best friends is a Jets fan and he had to watch the Aaron Rodgers experiment blew up in his face. The remaining teams have had seasons of four or less wins, which gave them chances to restock their roster. The biggest problem I see with the Saints is the draft picks. We’ve made on both sides of the line of scrimmage have not panned out especially early pics. Dennis Allen might not be the guy. He’s probably not. But if the definition of “the guy” is winning a Super Bowl, then practically no other coach in the league is going to be the guy. Dennis Allen had the same number or more wins than Sean, Payton and Bill Belichick this year. Does that mean he’s a better coach than them? Of course not. But a lot of teams are in a lot worse shape. |
