Realistically our offense only getting in range for 4 field goals and 1 XP in two preseason games, and Smyth only getting one of those attempts, and Grupe not missing any of his either, really limits the competition in the kicker battle. How could we cut the incumbent kicker with 0 misses in preseason in favor of a rookie kicker who we only tested for 1 attempt in preseason and has no past resume to show he can kick under NFL pressure? It would be much more of a competition if these were high scoring preseason games and someone missed a kick.

Best option IMO is to keep Grupe as the active kicker and exercise the exemption option to keep Smyth around too.

“our offense only getting in range for 4 field goals and 1 XP in two preseason games,” is showing us, and the rest of the league, that our offense is weak.

not disagreeing with anything your stating, but two stupid, meaningless preseason games doesn't necessarily mean much to me. Our offense may end up being a real turd fest, but i don't think these games show much, hell, we have a new OC, that's gonna take a bit of time. Like some here, I'm not sold on what we have, we will know soon enough, but think its a little early.

Maybe he can punt? F*ck Lou Hedley.
Now we have somewhat of a punter and 2 kickers.

Speaking of injuries, Nick Saldiveri still nursing a calf injury.

LG & RT are question marks with week 1 quickly approaching.

Really good discussion on the kicker decision. Also talk about who at #2 and #3 if Shaheed isn't ready.

Of course Rattler or Haener could assume #1 by the end of the year. But probably not on skill alone. The big factor is that on 3/17/25 Carr’s 2025 salary becomes fully guaranteed. If injured on that date, Carr could not be cut. If the Saints are out of contention in December, they could be looking to move on at QB. If they are looking to move in, its too dangerous to risk an injury to Carr that would lock in his salary for another year. So Rattler or Haener could be this years Jared Stiham.

But I don't expect the scenario where the Saints will be out of contention at any point. I believe ideally the Saints would love for one of the two backups to make advances to the point where they could spend another year as the sole backup and heir apparent to take over after the 2025 season.

Payton Turners injury is not that concering because most already expected it and thats why we declined his option, never gave him a raise, and have depth at his position. Maybe we shpuld try him at LG?

Since most project the Saints as an about .500 team, the scenario where we are below .500 and out of contention seems like about a 1 in 3 scenario.

Payton Turner is Marcus Davenport 2.0.

I’d call that optimistic, if not unrealistic at this point.

While Davenports production and availability were mid range, Davenport produced more in one season than Turner and Foskey may in their careers. It's not fair to Marcus Davenport's legacy to compare Turner or Foskey to him. It would be like saying Ian Book was Teddy Bridgewater 2.0.
