The major risk factor is called “playing professional football at our consistently uninspired and unprepared level”. We’re different.

I found this quote by Dennis Allen interesting: "“We’re trying to determine if we have a backup quarterback on our roster right now. I’ve seen some signs that I like,” Allen said. “Yet, I want to get them into real live situations, under the lights, and see how both of these guys operate in that environment. I’m encouraged by what I’ve seen out of both Spencer and Jake, and yet, we haven’t made any decisions there. I want to see what they operate like under the lights.

So if we take that at face value, there is still a scenario where the Saints sign Tannehill, Hoyer, Gabbert, McCarron, Sieman, resign Peterman, or pick up someone like Bailey Zappe who gets cut? Interesting. I guess there is a scenario in Allen's mind where Trey Lance, Taylor Heineken, or Zach Wilson could be our backup QB. It could be that expensive backups like Bridgewater, Watson, and Dalton were not a fluke or reaction to Brees age and this could be the teams new philosophy to throw $7 million at Ryan Tannehill if we get nervous. I hope not.

I hope we don't spend too much money. I like upside.

Runs counter to the narrative that Dennis Allen / Loomis aren't willing or able to improve the roster.

Interesting.

Would you sign him for say 4 years at $110MM?

I would 100% go after Aiyuk right now.

100%

Olave, Shaheed are your only reliable receivers.

All others are at BEST a fringe WR 3.

I'm hearing that the Patriots were offering up more than that contract wise and he turned them down. I'm also hearing that the 49er's want a frontline WR back in return as part of a deal. That's the hang-up with the Steelers. The Browns seem willing to include Amari Cooper as part of a deal.

I'm also hearing Aiyuk's demands include an average that would put him in the top five in WR salary. In other words, north of $30 million per year. Jefferson is at $35 million.

So, would you throw Shaheed and a high draft pic into the mix to get him? Keep in mind that Olave is due a payday after 2025.

I wouldn’t pay the $30 million+ for Aiyuk. I’d go after somebody like Courtland Sutton.

One thing that came along with Dr. Matt Rhea taking the helm as Director of Sports Science two years ago was shutting down players at the first hint of any soft tissue issues in training camp. He instituted a policy of slowly "ramping up" players during the preseason to lessen or eliminate those more serious incidences during the regular season. In the past the medical staff would probably have simply wrapped that hammy or calf tweak or strain and sent the players right back out there leading to prolonged problems.

Re: Official 2024 Training Camp Discussion

Are we trying to become the Matt Ryan Atlanta Falcons in every way?

I am not sure there is a position more disconnected with winning rings in the past 25 years than receiver. Julio Jones 0 rings. Randy Moss 0 rings. Calvin Johnson 0 rings. Andre Johnson 0 rings. Antonio Brown 0 rings once he emerged as a force (won a ring his rookie year where he had 167 yards receiving on the season 1 catch for 1 yard in the super bowl). Ocho Cinco 0 rings. TO 0 rings. Justin Jefferson 0 rings. Tyreek Hill 1 ring, 2 year drought afterward, then Chiefs trade Hill, basically have zero decent receivers, win 2 rings in a row without him. Davante Adams 0 rings. Larry Fitzgerald 0 rings. Anquan Boldin 1 token ring in aging 32yo season, after which he was immediately traded to top rival for a 6th round pick. DeAndre Hopkins 0 rings. Dallas Cowboys have an elite #1 receiver basically every season, last ring 1995, Lamb Cooper Bryant all 0 rings.

Essentially it is harder to win a Super Bowl if you invest too much in a wide receiver. You end up having to make the offense one dimensional to justify trading all your draft picks and/or spending all your cap on one receiver. It is better to have a #1 WR who is considered second tier or complementary and doesn't cost as much or attract as much attention or demand to be fed the ball. A Colston gets you more rings than a Moss. Spending $30 million on Aiyuk would be flushing money down the toilet while trying to make Derek Carr into the Saints Matt Ryan or the Raiders Derek Carr (remember when they got Carr an elite receiver and he didnt get better?).

Re: Official 2024 Training Camp Discussion

The Saints aren't serious "contenders" (deep playoff run) so committing that type of coin to a WR would make zero financial sense.

So many question marks on that O line. If it doesn't hold up, it won't even matter who is playing WR.

The Saints need to be looking to bring in TE's & Olinemen.

Take a page out of the Detroit Lions 2021-23 off seasons.

-I hope the Saints find a way to keep Robinson at RB. He has Kamara type skills. I just don't see Williams value but he will make the squad.
-The OLine is a concern. Three of the five spots are solid. I believe Penning at worst will be serviceable. The LG position is a total crap shoot. But, if an injury or God forbid two happens, it could get real ugly real quick.
-The TE position is NFL level not good. No dynamic pass catcher or blocker on the roster. Holker is the wild card. Used properly, I believe he can contribute.

The Saints have him at starting RT on their initial official depth chart released yesterday. He had to have learned something while working out with Terron Armstead during the offseason. Penning said they worked on technique and Armstead said, more importantly, that they worked on his confidence. Also, the offense that has been installed by Kubiak is supposed very "o-line friendly" and very play action pass heavy which we all know takes a lot of pressure off the line. Last year the Saints were dead last in utilizing the play action.

Saints vs Cardinals pre season game in two days.

Guess we’ll find out if he has improved this off season.

Chase Young is amazing and should push Cam Jordan to the bench, but Trevor Penning is a problem we need to fix ASAP.

Re: Official 2024 Training Camp Discussion

Trevor Penning (if he ever starts again) is gonna get Carr folded in half.

Dougie Marrone couldn't fix him, Armstead can't help him and the current oline coach will be smart to bench him.

Raw project that was a reach in rd 1. He's a bust.
