Simmons should have never got out of New Orleans and somebody like Donovan Smith should have had Penning on the bench months ago.
Atlanta's problem is that they the have lowest available cap space of all the 32 teams in the league and by a sizable margin. They still have to fit Judon in and their available cap for the top 51 on the roster is $139,567. That right, less than $140K and they still have to make room for two more players at the cut. They probably made the move on Judon after Simmons wouldn't deal. As things stand they haven't come to terms with Judon either.

Re: Time To Move On At Tackle?

Very much related to the subject of the thread. The Saints are by no means alone in the dire need for OT help. It is a league wide expanding crisis. There may not be anything available as an upgrade to even backups come the cut. We'll see.

On Trevor Penning: “I saw a player that didn’t trust himself to play with technique at all. Went away from everything.”

- Duke Manyweather, Penning's offseason coach.

Sorry, not buying the excuse.

Four 1st round picks and we can't block a sneeze.

It wasn't as bad on the whole as most believe. Far from perfect. But not the end of the world.

Re: Time To Move On At Tackle?

I'm holding out hope that TP is able to wake up and realize he's a 6'7" 325lb lineman who can dominate at Right Tackle.

If we see the same level of performance this weekend and DON'T make a SIGNIFICANT change at RT - and I'm talking a potential trade to SAVE the season, I am not confident this team has a shot at anything other than sub .500

To watch the Falcons work intently and aggressively to solve their problems while we continuously re-mold pieces of crap into slightly different shaped pieces of crap is maddening.

I'm still holding out hope that the GM's office is targetting some OL's that will be either dropped or put on the taxi squad to be had for little to no sacrifice and cap space.

When the Saints returned to New Orleans this week for a practice at Tulane’s Yulman Stadium, Penning split first-team reps with offseason acquisition Oli Udoh. That trend continued Wednesday, when the team held its first training camp practice at its Airline Drive complex.

After practice, coach Dennis Allen said he would “still give the advantage” to Penning and that putting Udoh in the lineup with the starters was a matter of seeing what it looked like. But it is notable that the Saints have chosen to work someone else in at right tackle now, after two preseason games and several weeks of training camp.

“Much like I’ve said in some of the other position battles that we’re not quite settled on yet, I’m still waiting on the one guy that is going to jump out at me and say, ‘This is my frickin’ job,’” Allen said. “When it happens, we’re all going to know, … we’re all going to see it. I’m still waiting for that moment.”

Penning did show improvement from his first preseason game to his second — notably, his first and second career games at right tackle — but there is a difference between showing improvement and being someone the team knows it can reliably count on in a game setting.

The 2022 first-rounder has battled injury and ineffectiveness throughout his career with the Saints. Fairly or not, his draft status and his play to this point has put him squarely under the lens of those watching the team closely, and his mistakes have therefore been magnified.
