Let's face it... Some things are just messed up.

I often wonder if the Big Lebowski knows what he wants on D. We have a lot of speed and size this year, yet we play the opposite .

I'm not in panic mode yet however there is reason to be concerned... specifically on defense.
Without a stud up front it may be a long season. I also think we have enough speed, enough for a 3-4. I don't like our D coaches(Vitt and Johnson) not being able to get this down, there are better out there than those 2 to teach and get the most out of their players.

We don't have a reason to play hard now. Before, it was Katrina, then it was trying to prove they're not a one year fluke. We need that reason again to win, it isn't going to be to show up the commissioner.

Who cares; it's preseason... What better time to try it and see how it works out?

My biggest concern with this team is from the DTs, or lack thereof. #95 and #71 played well at the spots in scrub time but who knows what they'll do against the 1s.
I'd have supported a trade up in the 1st (for once) for NT Shelton just to finally change all this. Rumors are the Saints brain trust finally decided to fix our soft underbelly but Cleaveland beat us to the pick.

Missing out on that big man, really wanted Xavier Williams (DT, N. Iowa) or SOMEONE BIG in the 7th. In 2014, we take SJB (58th) over NT Dix (83rd)? In 2013, NT Kwame Geathers who went UDFA was there in the 7th and made a team. What? Didn't like the name Geathers this decade? Why don't we take a flier on some big ones late?

Well, recently we picked up veteran DT K. Williams, at least. Pray we're not yet done.

Stupid penalties. Anyone who cant figure out where to line up, or how to
figure out where the line of scrimmage is, shouldnt play football.
No pass rush.
Poor blitz pickup.
Some flashes of offense.

Looks like the backups are chips off the old starters blocks.

It sure looks like real problems to me.
For now, we suck.
The thing is, you could be right are it could be nothing. I get that people aren't impressed. I'm never impressed by these games, no matter what happens. There just isn't any way of knowing how guys will be lined up or how much harder they will play when it actually matters.

I remember in Sean's first year here we went 1-3 in pre-season. It wasn't just the record that looked bad. I remember we got blown out by Dallas in one of those games, 30-7. They looked completely inept and were coming off that 3-13 season. We all had high hopes for Brees, but it just looked like the team was too bad.

Well, we all remember how that season ended up, and we beat that same Dallas team 42-14, or whatever it was. Now we could have an identical performance in this pre-season and end up being bad. The point is that it tells us almost nothing. That's just how I see it. I'm not justifying any of the bad, but I've seen too many weird things in these games to really form an actual opinion over it.

If I had a nickel for every time I heard that, the NFL would fine and suspend me.

Re: 4th and 20 D was Sean's call

Why can't Payton just leave well enough alone when it comes to defense? One minute he's announcing we're switching to a 3-4 and hires an appropriate coordinator to run it. After one up and one down season he brings in Dennis Allen and we switch back to a 4-3 essentially making Rob Ryan a lame duck defensive coordinator.

Wanna know why we might suck on defense again this year? How about having a coordinator on his way out, a defensive assistant who is already affecting the scheme, and a head coach who is offensive-minded overriding both of them to call defensive plays. It's a mess folks.
