I can really see the Saints and Butler doing a deal post draft. Makes sense with the cap space and if the Pats are playing silly Buggers wanting the 11th i can see the Loomis and Butler doing a deal at the draft and giving up the 1st in 2018. Go for broke this season

Kind of surprised both of the aforementioned LB's are still available. Both talented guys at the position.

Shields recent drug arrest and prior injury history certainly doesn't help his case. Good player when healthy though.

Payton: Saints won't give up No. 11 for Malcolm Butler - NFL.com

Cross off one path in Malcolm Butler's Choose Your Own Adventure offseason.

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton said the team would not sign the New England Patriots corner to an offer sheet and give up the No. 11 pick.

"Currently it's my understanding that he hasn't signed his tender," Payton said at the Annual League Meeting on Wednesday. "We can sign him to an offer sheet, but I don't think we're going to do that and give up the 11th pick. In fact, I know we won't do that. So it is what it is right now."

Payton's definitive response nixes one of Butler's options in an effort to earn a long-term deal.

The coach wouldn't speculate on any potential trade scenarios that could bring Butler to New Orleans. If the Saints won't sign the 27-year-old corner to an offer sheet, a trade is the only option to pry him away from New England this season.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft said earlier in the week the team doesn't currently intend on trading Butler -- though Bill Belichick could change course if offered the right bounty.

If the Saints won't hand Butler an official offer sheet -- and no other team steps up out of the mist -- the corner will eventually be forced to sign his restricted free-agent tender.

At that point the Patriots could trade him to the highest bidder, where Butler would likely get the long-term deal he's seeking. The Super Bowl XLIX hero could also play out the season on the low-cost $3.91 million tender before hitting the open market next year.

It's not a surprise that the Saints wouldn't fork over the No. 11 pick and hand Butler a massive contract in one swoop. Hearing Sean Payton say it outright, however, certainly helps the Patriots' leverage in convincing the undrafted free agent to give them one more year of cheap labor.

This verifies what I have been saying all along. The #11 pick was never in play. It was only speculation by two Boston based media outlets. It should surprise me how many people read the headline and jump to the totally false conclusion ... but it doesn't. Today's society, in general, has become lazy and seldom reads any further than the headline and the intro paragraph in the frenzy for click bait feeders.

Why Saints suck on defense year in and year out:

You first sign players and then try to figure out where they fit.

Hankins does have two of Payton's favorite qualities just like Warford...

Another thing that shows is that since Philly is stuck with anything over league minimum money was not the object for Chase. He wanted to come back to the Saints. That means something.

DT (2) 98 - Sheldon Rankins, 93 - David Onyemata, 92 - Justin Zimmer

NT (2) 90 - Nick Fairley, 95 - Tyeler Davison, 96 - Ashaad Mabry

Hagan, look at our rotation, where's he gonna play?

Now, let's say Ony kicks out to DE, which I think he'd excel; in fact, I'd draft a DE with a first or second and draft Vanderdoes in the third...

Still look at what you've got...

DT (2) 90 - Nick Fairley, 98 - Sheldon Rankins, 92 - Justin Zimmer

NT (2) 00- Jonathan Hankins, 95 - Tyeler Davison, 96 - Ashaad Mabry

So are you going to sit a first round pick (Rankins), not that this team has done it recently, or...

Are you gonna bring Fairley in for passing downs? After committing that much cap space to him?

I think we're done with DTs unless Ony moves to DE full-time, and we draft a DT...

All signs would point to no. Ireland was GM in Miami at the time they drafted Jordan. Swing and a miss there.

Still weak against the run and keeping LB clean. Gotta get off the love for sack and pressure stats

If he is healthy that's sneaky good signing. True power back. No more 3&1 after run play on 2nd down.

He would be a solid addition to special teams without a doubt.

In return, Braman agreed to reduce his 2015 salary from $1.2 million to $745,000. Braman is a pure special teamer. He was PFF's No. 2 kickoff coverer last season

If he is signed it is to be a two headed monster. MIA and AP make one healthy back. Only problem is bith need carries to get going. Best outcome would be a Williams/Stewart team like the panthers had for years. Both played great when healthy. They just took turns getting hurt

Not to mention the Vikings had a horrible O line last year.
