I say wait till the camp cuts happen to add a player.

LeGarrette Blount? anyone?

Re: 2017 Free Agency thread anyone?

I like Blount
But does he add enough of a difference to Ingram?

My issue is Ingram isnt a great power back or speed guy. Bringing in a power back will p1ss him off loosing carries.

Id like Blount but you'd want a 3rd down back too and then you are paying Ingram a fortune to be what?

If you were saying Trade Ingram draft McCaffrey and pick up Blount then i like that idea. You get the power and speed backs. Just pick up a jack off all trades to cover both and your good

I still like Jamal Charles as a rotation back but can he stay healthy

However, if you did that with the Blount idea, our offense would get way too predictable because Blount can't catch out of the backfield. Ingram never gets his fair dues, but he is a terrific player.

Blount averages around 6-7 catches a season. Ingram has 96 catches in the last two seasons.

Re: 2017 Free Agency thread anyone?

True
But Ingram is neither a power back or receiver.

The issue is ive seen the offense fail a fair few times eith only a yard or two to get in the red zone.

Stock pile talent at the various positions. Let em fight it out at camp. Keep the best 53.

I personally don't think it was short yardage that really hurt us last season, we battled back to 4-4 and then Brees went on a 4 game streak throwing 2-3 interceptions per game.

Agreed. That's why I'm now a fan of taking McCaffrey in the first round...

Should our new, HEALTHY, defense struggle, McCaffrey would be our Sproles extending drives...

Excellent complement to the bowling ball Ingram...

Re: 2017 Free Agency thread anyone?

Remember wasting money on smallish CBs like Jason David who struggled in our system?

Remember wasting money on Browner, when Breaux came in and showed real CB play?

We've got to start to remember our history and realize, first, we had an abnormal amount of injuries last season and, second, the pass rush didn't start to gel till the second half of the season...

Now this would be a sly, sneaky pickup and a helluva lot cheaper than Malcolm Butler and would buy time for a developing CB...

SP went on record speaking highly about McCaffrey and stated he had a "crystal clear" vision for the player. Christian checks off on a lot of scouts boxes. It does make me wonder.

I could see the Saints going after a RB as early as rd 3 if not sooner.

We need a better TE . I like Mixon over McCaffrey and want use up a 1st. If Payton wants to strike fear again draft a TE at 11 and Mixon at 42.

Fear in his fan base? After O.J. what TE's worth an eleven and Mixon at 32? Wow, that'd go right up there with the SJB pick in over reaching a draft pick. There's a real good chance that guy's still there in the early third.

And in this offense that TE will put up elite numbers and then you'll have to trade him after his rookie contract...

In the modern economic cap model, there's really not a whole lot of money for an elite TE when you've got an elite QB, two elite defenders, an All-Pro offensive linemen, and a Top 5 X receiver...

You know, kinda what we should've learned from the Graham experience...

Re: 2017 Free Agency thread anyone?

True but if you can get 4 years out of them then a 1/2 round oick before letting them walk its good business

Seer1 04-15-2017 01:54 PM

Re: 2017 Free Agency thread anyone?

Although Hagan's really persuasive, I'm still having a bit of a problem justifying a TE selection in the first with what we already have. I'll be having flashbacks if it's any TE except O.J. There'll be some pretty awesome ones still around in the third and fourth. To win now, I'm still thinking our focus needs to be pretty much on the other side of the ball in the first couple three rounds.

Re: 2017 Free Agency thread anyone?

Cook traded and no real backup for Zach much less a future starter makes the need for a blocking TE with receiving skills is a huge need for the saints to help out the poor OT that takes over if Zach goes down. He goes down DBL TE set appears to be the only real option. kills two birds with one stone

11 - O.J. Howard TE Alabama 6055 251 4.51 #88 Sr
103 - TE Iowa 6036 250 4.53 #46 rSr
229 - Blake Jarwin TE Oklahoma St. 6050 244 4.76 #47 rSr

That is why I wanted the saints to chase.

Ricky Wagner RT 27 BAL DET 5/$47,500,000
Rex Burkhead RB 26 CIN NE 1/$3,150,000

Let Zach sign an extension and play out his years as our swing OT Heck of a heavy OL set that would have made. Then defense in the draft could be the #1 issue.

We could have avoided the issue all together

I would have passed on these 3 in heart beat to sign those two.

Nick Fairley DT 29 NO NO 4/$28,000,000 to $32,000,000
Ted Ginn Jr. WR 31 CAR NO 3/$11,000,000
Manti Te'o ILB 26 LAC NO 2 /$5,000,000

Round 3 has Nick replacements

Dalvin Tomlinson DT Alabama 6027 310 5.19 #54 rSr
Vincent Taylor*, DT/NT Oklahoma State 6025 304 5.07 #96 rJr

I would have rather gone with

Lawrence Guy DE/DT 27 BAL NE 4/$13,400,000 $2,600,000

As Drew goes so do the saints. He goes down and the season is over.

Re: 2017 Free Agency thread anyone?

Hell Hagan, we could've avoided the issue already had they listened to us and drafted heavy into the OL a few years ago instead of drafting whatever just to confuse the mock draft gurus (and us).

When I lived in the city, had friends who worked, covered, were close to the team during the latter Mora years...

Many in the building were convinced without the strong leadership of Mr. Finks, Mora was making picks contrary to logic to attempt to show he was the smartest cat in the building...

Glad we don't have that problem now...

FIFY

We've seen some picks over the Payton years that have rivaled anything Mora did. I'm feeling it's gonna take another ring for me to get over SJB. Fingers crossed with the new staff....

Oh, the SJB pick was all on the other Ryan kid, you know, the guy that's not in the building and has no credibility to defend himself...

Boy if that pick wasn't evidence of Richard Sherman getting in Payton's head and making an impression, don't know what would be...

Can you imagine opening the season in Minnesota, with AP in OUR backfield?

The internet would f***ing collapse in St. Paul/Minneapolis...

Saints should jump on this if they're not taking Shaheen; Barnidge would love to team with Brees...

Not sure
Seems he was a bit flash in the pan to me. Been in the lwague 8 years and got iver 250 yards twice

Isn't Barnidge more of a blocking TE?

He does both well. He had over 1,000 yards receiving in 2015 and around 600 last year even with the lack of decent Quarterback play in Cleveland. He'd be great here; just the type of player Payton likes at that position. I feel like he's an upgrade over Fleener, but his addition also opens up the opportunity for a lot of two TE sets with AP in the backfield. We can go with a heavy I-Formation with Michael Thomas as the lone receiver.

I just dont see any DE we can get now being as good

Yes he needs a good deal but they were willing to pay Johnson or Butler and he might be slightly less coming off a poor season. Him opposite Cam would be a nigthmare
