I could see a 2 or 3rd doing the deal on draft day. They need to speak to Butlers agent first and see what he is after.

Id give them their 3rd back but not the 2nd

I hope the leave Butler trade alone. The guy isn't that good. Malcolm is 5'10, how in the hell he going to face the 6'5 giants? He run a 4.6, can you see him keeping up with desean Jackson, Corey brown, & Julio? The guy fits a cover 2 scheme. He can't play man like DA like to run

I just hate that we gave up a pick. #32 and a 3rd is a pretty fair deal for a proven top 10 commodity. Why in the hell did we have to give up anything? I had a feeling we would come out on the short end of the deal if we dealt with the pats..sigh

Re: Brandin Cooks Officially Traded to Patriots

Plenty of rumours of a seperate trade for Butler

He isnt worth a 1st imo.
His contract will ne huge and even if he walks youll only get a 3 in comp if you sign no big FA.

Could see Saints sending R2 to NE for Butler + 3rd

Any trade you do with the Pats your getting no vasalined. The pressure is on the F.O. to make the right pick. It still could turn out in our favor but the odds are not looking good.

Yeah....we'll probably give them back the 32nd pick and the 3rd round pick we got for Cooks and trade them for Butler. LOL!!

In all seriousness...I'm glad we got a trade, but I was hoping for something more then the 32nd pick. Then we gave them a 4th rounder? IDK about that. Whatever tho. I hope we land some good talent and playmakers in the draft.

Sean has officially proven how much he wants to get on his knees for his idol. The pats will not be negatively impacted by this trade. Cooks won't complain on a team that wins 12 games a year.

a number 1 and 3rd which are really a 2nd and 4th. I still think it's a good deal. Picks 11, 32, 42, 76, 96, 196, 229 we are going to get a great defense this year. We could still get Butler too. Wow we are really putting together a great offseason = GREAT SEASON!

A pretty fair assessment from WalterFootball...

Patriots acquire WR Brandin Cooks, 4th-rounder from Saints for 1st- and 3rd-round picks
My apologies for being slow with these grades Friday evening. I just got home from a wedding rehearsal dinner (my fiancee's sister is getting married tomorrow), and I'll get to all of the grades shortly.

I have to say that despite it being speculated for days now, I'm still shocked that this deal went through. It's kind of crazy that the Patriots will have Brandin Cooks in their offense. I didn't even think they'd be in the market for a receiver because they had Julian Edelman, Chris Hogan, Malcolm Mitchell and maybe Michael Floyd on the roster (plus Rob Gronkowski), but Bill Belichick apparently thought differently.

It's going to be fun to watch Tom Brady have a new weapon like Cooks. He hasn't had a dynamic, downfield threat like Cooks since Randy Moss. It might be instinctive to point out that Cooks could decline because he won't be playing with Drew Brees anymore, until you remember that he'll now be paired with Brady, and there theoretically shouldn't be a drop-off. The price is a bit steep for my blood, but at least New England didn't have to surrender Malcolm Butler.

I like the move for the Patriots, but I think the Saints are the winners of this deal. Cooks made it known that he didn't want to be on the roster anymore, and the Saints have two strong receivers without him in Michael Thomas and Willie Snead. New Orleans now has two first-round selections in a very deep draft, so they can use those picks to improve their woeful defense.

Grade for Patriots - B+
Grade for Saints - A-

Idk about that, he complained after we won the game "close mouths don't get fed" AFTER THAT I WAS DONE WITH COOKS

We got bent over are ran in dry. Cooks which is a top slot wr for the #32 pick and moved up 15 picks into the 3rd. Makes no sense.

I do think Cooks will do well but it should be remembered that teams would be warry of trading for Saints receivers or TE

Meachem
Stills
Jimmy Graham
Brn Watson

All put up career numbers before falling pretty flat if not with him

103 pick is not an early 3rd pick. It's the last pick.

We could take Barnett or Thomas DE's with #11, Conley CB Ohio State #32, Pat Mahomes QB Texas Tech #42, Devonte Fields DE Louisville #76, Dion Dawkins OT Temple #96

3 picks in the first 42. That's 3 probable starters on the defense. I like it.

Another way to look at it is this.

Both picks come at the end of the day and teams eying players that are dropping will make a move before the closing of business on that day.

What do you define as early 3rd?

It was a comp pick from the 3rd, as in actually a 4th round pick. Pats killed us on this trade.

Let's not forget we gave up a 3rd round pick to move up in the 1st for cooks...

Let's hope we have some draft magic, because the FO just doesn't get it. Might as well have signed Byrd or Spiller again, or perhaps fleener.... This is right up there.

I dunno man, I just don't see it like that. Sure we only gave up a 4th rounder, but having to give up anything more when all we get is the dead last pick in the 1st and a 3rd is ridiculous to me. I would've maaaaaaybe given them a 7th rounder, and if they balked at it then I'd tell em to kiss my ass, no deal.

All I'm saying is we better nail it with the #32 pick or this will go down as a sh***y deal.

Even though Cooks is a great player, He is not worth the contract he was going to command in the future. In the meantime the potential locker room disruptions could possibly be catastrophic. Hopefully the Defense will be improved as a result. With Brees approaching the end of his career, having money tied up in a skilled position player with no defense and possibly an below average QB would not be a good thing.

Rivers has actually shown he can't play well without playmaking receivers. He's a good qb with weapond but take them away and he's exposed. Also, Meachem was never a true number one. He never had to deal with the top corners because of Colston and Moore. He was treated as a number one in SD. Wilson's been playing with a bad oline and the seahawks are trying to utilize a offense that does not fit them.

Graham has been a bust for Seattle

Watson has never put up numbers he did with Brees and he was an old vet when he came here,he wasnt getting better

Stills hasnt come close to 1000 yards again.

Meachem was still productive under Brees. Was generally good for 6/700 yards. Goes to Chargers and just breaks 200

See post above

Watson had been in the league 9 years before joining the Saints. Spent two years as a back up. Plays full time with Drew for a year and put up career numbers at 34/35.

Remember 6 of them years in the league were with Brady

And Cooks isnt a number 1
He is just about 5'10 and no team was willing to better the offer the Pats did. The fact that teams would offer a straight up mid round 1st shows teams dont think he is worth what he will be asking for next year.

He is a complentary piece. A Wes Welker that will need Gronk or another true 1 receiver to give him space to work.

The Saints were not paying him north of 10ml a year they would have needed to

he will have 85-90 catches next year and 1200 yards. We got hosed. Good thing we signed low energy when we did, 7-9 could have got away
