Best case scenario for 2018 is that we get the Armstead we thought we were going to get when he signed that massive contract.
One option would be a sign-and-trade where he gets more guaranteed money on the back-end to move the upfront hit...

But, per Over the Cap AND Spotrac, we'd gain $2.9mil in a Pre-June 1st designated trade and $10.3mil in a Post-Jun 1st designated trade...

The Pre-June 1st would revive our rookie pool without having to rework any other contracts...

I think the most we could get for him would be a mid to late 2nd at best. Like JP said the LT position could be handled by Peat or Ram. I'm liking Sean Welsh Iowa C/G in the 4th that could plug in at G or C if needed. I don't think we have enough depth at G or C.

Salary wise, it makes no sense. Terron isn't getting traded in 2018. Even with the thought of reshuffling guys (Ramz/Peat) as you point out, you still have to get a 1st, even 2nd as a reliable starter. And there are no guarantees that player will be remotely close to the level of Armstead.

2019 would be more realistic with trade discussions on TA.

Personally I like Armstead, he come from a little known college in Arkansas and has been really, really good for us considering where we drafted him. The downside is he is not seeing nearly the playing time with injury. We already have 2 highly capable LT that could take care of the LT spot if he goes down but as far as any depth whatsoever at C/G there is nothing at all which is a huge problem ( hole really) so do we roll the dice on a often hurt player which would leave a hole in the line or do we trade him now with teams hurting for a LT and pick up an xtra pick to void that hole if Armstead goes down? I understand your point financially but we have no, nada, nothing as depth on the O line and (need) some. I do get skidish about rookies when remembering Charlie Brown but we have to roll the dice somewhere.

We're exactly 2 weeks away from another stellar Saints draft for 2018.

Can't wait.
