this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Deuce Windham @RevDeuceWindham 1 Game through the 4 games I'll watch of Eli Apple's 2018 season. So far, more positives than negatives. Also seems to fit what #Saints DC Dennis Allen wants to do in terms of zone coverage. Back ...

Re: Giants trading Eli Apple to saints
Great trade. Talented guy. Upgrade over this years Crawley. Coming from a losing/troubled organization. Paired with a former college teammate. I thought the secondary was struggling more from a coaching/scheme aspect, but the bottom line is it was not getting the job done. At 5-1 with a 39 year old QB and a brutal schedule moving forward, I like it.

When you drop a number of guys back the quarterback's read takes longer to find an open passing bucket, window to read, decide and throw... Our problem with our Saints defense is that we/'ve lack/ed a quality, complementary skill player at LCB as well as Safety support to defend deep passes... Also, when rushing three, only Cam Jordan has shown to be an effective pass rusher with regular pressure while other defensive linemen are losing one-on-ones... After a while a quarterback settles in and gets comfortable with the pocket rolling away from Cam... Often a pass rush is not just how fast you get to the quarterback, but also to delay the quarterback's read, throw allowing the back seven to read, react and move to defend the passing target... The Blitz really should be more of a shock and awe weapon to rattle a quarterback who may be starting to get comfortable... |
It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

Re: Giants trading Eli Apple to saints
For me all eyes are clearly now on Dennis Allen. He has 5 1st rounders on this defense. He also brought in his guys (Coleman/Klein/Davis) via Free Agency and now add in Eli Apple. There is too much talent not to become a top 10-15 defense. We can continue to break down player by player but its time for results as unit, starting with the DC.
Dennis Allen must put his guys in place to be successful. No excuses. |
