Reports in Michael Thomas not turned up and holding out till he gets a new deal.

Don't get how you sign a contract for x years then decide you want a new deal now and won't honour the deal you signed. Poor form

Last few reports I heard they weren't too far apart on the numbers. I wonder how long this hold out will last.

Why would MT report to camp? The guy’s one of the best in the league and our only good WR. Pay the man his worth.

I can see that logic if it was a negotiated deal that he signed, but rookie deals are slotted. He has greatly outperformed his slot and deserves to get paid accordingly. Real practice doesn't begin until Friday and Thomas needs far less time with Brees to get ready for the start of the season. This could be a very good opportunity for the younger receivers to get increased reps.

Don't tell Earl Thomas that. Can't guard Mike is breaking NFL records, ELITE at his position and on pace to become one of the very best to play WR.

At the end of the day, the NFL is a business. What happens if he gets hurt/injured in the midst of negotiating a new contract? Realistically, who can blame the guy? We are at the very beginning of training camp. Not that big of a deal. He's a seasoned vet, trains hard, stays in shape ...

Meanwhile, somewhere on Metarie Dr the Mickster is Loomising.

A new deal will get done soon enough.

Keep that same energy when he gets his new contract (and he will) and goes out there and continues to perform at a high level.

Not in the NFL. The NFL as a league has 3 hallmarks: contracts are not guaranteed, injuries are guaranteed, and performance is king.

MT goes out on the practice field like Dez did and ruptures his Achilles. It's game over.

MT has historic production over the first 3 seasons of his career. NFL records. He's outplayed his contract. So he needs to secure his financial future before he steps out on the field again.

BTW it works the other way too. A team will restructure a contract or cut a player in a hot minute if their production doesn't match the dollars they are being paid. After the guaranteed money, a contract isn't worth the paper it's written on.

One also needs to understand how NFL contracts are structured. Because guaranteed money is spread across the cap, the tendency is to have extensions of long length to lower the cap hit. The problem is that the market moves in the meantime and players often outplay their extensions. A contract is pretty much over once the guaranteed money runs out. So early signing extensions are the players' way of restructuring contracts for their benefit.

Just advocating for Thomas. He's a 2nd round pick that is playing like a Hall of Famer. He should get his money. And honestly I don't believe the Saints have a problem giving it to him. It's just a matter of crossing t's and dotting i's. I also believe there's a game of chicken going on between the Saints, Atlanta, Thomas, and Julio Jones, who is also trying to get his contract refreshed. Jones cannot sign any new deal before tomorrow (Friday) because the Clowns threw extra money at him last year and a deal has to hold for a calendar year before it can be amended. So whomever jumps last will probably get the best deal.

What can happen with MT in the first week, or even the first month, of training camp outside of him getting injured? That would be idiotic.

I feel too many of us fans only see situations like this from the fan's perspective. For NFL players, this is their livelihood, their business. It's a hell of a lot more important to take care of business as opposed to conditioning drills, practice reps, and preseason games. MT has absolutely nothing to prove to anyone on the practice field. I'd be perfectly happy if he sat training camp out just as long as he's ready for the Texans week one. That goes for Brees, Kamara, Jordan, Lattimore, and the like too. They just need to be ready and uninjured for the season. If taking a couple of days, or a couple of weeks off in the preseason accomplishes that, then that's great as far as I'm concerned.

Seems Mike Thomas signs first at $20mil/annum, and then Julio Jones who had better total raw yardage numbers...

Mike had one more touchdown, more catches, and a better catch rate/percentage...

No it’s not. BOTH sides have said since the offseason began that they wanted to go ahead and get the contract done this year.
Alternatively the Saints could let him play out his contract and wind up in a bidding war with some team that decides they want to pay him 25 mil a year and build their offense around him.
Right now the contract to beat is OBJ. Next year it could be someone else’s contract at a higher number.

LOL, not nitpicking, just want to share - it's actually Metairie Road, but the Saints are off of Airline Highway in Metairie, a few miles down from MSY Airport...

But Loomising??? Love, LOVE , the reference and probably no more appropriate word for a guy that somehow manages a niche to stay relevant, employed...

Who’s it going to be this year? Here is a list of candidates to think about.

WR Simmie Cobbs: He was scooped up last year by the Saints and put on the practice squad. Cobbs has been impressive in OTA’s and Mini Camp practices, making tough catches look routine at times. He’s a strong candidate at a position of need for the black and gold.

DE Corbin Kaufusi: He’s 6-foot-9 with fantastic length and you can never have enough pass rushers. The rookie out of BYU will be a fun guy to watch. He’s got some pass rush ability that could land him a spot on the team.

RB Devine Ozigbo: The Saints do not have a lot of depth behind Latavius Murray and Alvin Kamara. Ozigbo’s skill set matches up with the Saints offense very well. If he can make a couple of plays on special teams he’ll put himself in a nice position to make the roster.

DT Shy Tuttle: Was highly productive at Tennessee. The Saints made an effort to get a little heavier this year on the defensive line. Tuttle fits that bill checking in at 300 pounds. Sheldon Rankins will miss some time at the start of the season rehabbing from a torn Achilles and David Onyemata is suspended for the first game, thus creating some depth concerns in the interior of the defensive line.

DT Sylvester Williams: Isn’t by true definition a dark horse but in this case he still has long odds to make the roster. His veteran presence gives him a chance to stick at a thin position group heading into the regular season. Spoiler Alert! Williams is my pick as a dark horse. The problem is if a younger player like Shy Tuttle plays just as well as Williams, Tuttle will get the nod. He’ll be cheaper and isn’t a vested veteran, it’s complicated the CBA would come into play here. In other words if Williams is on the roster through week 1, the Saints would be on the hook for his salary for the rest of the season. Tuttle could be bounced on and off the roster as need be without a heavy price.

DB Terrell Williams Jr.: He’s huge for a defensive back at 6-foot-4, 212 pounds. The issue is the Saints secondary might be the deepest position group on the entire roster. Williams Jr. will have to find a way on the roster in the kicking game on special teams.

WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey: Is massive at 6-foot-4, 225 pounds. At Texas, he was extremely physical, running over defenders when the football was in his hand. He doesn’t have good top end speed. During OTA’s and mini-camp practices Humphrey struggled to get separation from defensive backs. When the pads are on that might change, but I doubt it. However, the Saints tend to favor big receivers so we’ll see.
DE Corbin Kaufusi: He’s 6-foot-9 with fantastic length and you can never have enough pass rushers. The rookie out of BYU will be a fun guy to watch. He’s got some pass rush ability that could land him a spot on the team.

KAUFUSI !!!

My pick is LJH.

We always wanted Anquan Boldin butnit never panned out. This could be the same type player.

Darkhorse, Major, darkhorse. But, yeah, I'm amazed, excited he fell to us in the draft...

What makes it difficult for some of these DBs, LBs to make the squad is the guaranteed money paid to Banjo, Robertson who are non-starters, but logged many kick coverage snaps...

Agreed on Simmie Cobbs. Payton liked him enough to keep him on the active roster for the last month of the season so I think there’s definitely a plan there.

Re: And so it begins...

I'm waiting to see them with the pads on and see what shakes out, but there're three that intrigue me...

Porter Gustin, Devine Ozigbo, and Cyril Grayson...

For whatever reason, we saw Trey's snaps decrease his second year, and the Saints need that third pass rusher for those Nascar Packages (Payton loves cross-sport-themed monikers)...

Gustin, healthy, was good for a sack+ a game at USC, and has the size to play DE or the Jack in a 4-3 - he's a multiple front edge defender...

Murray is a big man, but his burst is just adequate; as awesome as Kamara is, don't want to use him as a bowling ball (Ingram)...

While Ozigbo will require coaching up coming from the Cornhuskers, he has terrific burst at the second level...

Saints offense thrives with outside speed threat to tear the tops off of offenses; Devery got it done; never better with Cooks; Ginn just isn't always AVAILABLE...

Grayson will have to show a good progression rate in his development, must have reliable hands, and win the return game job...

With the speed he showed blowing past ALL the DBs in OTAs, he makes the squad, and the Saints have found their replacement for Ginn...

Re: And so it begins...

Not so much darkhorses, but I really want to see us get younger, now, on defense; that's why I'm put off with the guaranteed money to Banjo, Robertson - it all but guarantees them a roster spot before camp...

Gardner looks like the goods, can play safety as well as nickelback; Hampton has a bit of a challenge because of the above mentioned situation...

The guy is a beast but he is not worth being the highest paid wr. Trade him now and let brees turn these other wr’s into studs. Do I want to keep MT? Absolutely, but he is not worth 20 mil a year
