And so it begins...

Re: And so it begins...
Right off the bat, want to see if the offensive line is healthy, feeling strong...
and then there's this... |
Re: And so it begins...
I feel like a little girl waiting on her first date! I'm nervous as hell!
|
Re: And so it begins...
Reports in Michael Thomas not turned up and holding out till he gets a new deal.
Don't get how you sign a contract for x years then decide you want a new deal now and won't honour the deal you signed. Poor form |

Why would MT report to camp? The guy’s one of the best in the league and our only good WR. Pay the man his worth.

At the end of the day, the NFL is a business. What happens if he gets hurt/injured in the midst of negotiating a new contract? Realistically, who can blame the guy? We are at the very beginning of training camp. Not that big of a deal. He's a seasoned vet, trains hard, stays in shape ... Meanwhile, somewhere on Metarie Dr the Mickster is Loomising. A new deal will get done soon enough. |
Re: And so it begins...
I say report. You're gonna get your contract. Don't look like an idiot in the meantime!

MT goes out on the practice field like Dez did and ruptures his Achilles. It's game over. MT has historic production over the first 3 seasons of his career. NFL records. He's outplayed his contract. So he needs to secure his financial future before he steps out on the field again. BTW it works the other way too. A team will restructure a contract or cut a player in a hot minute if their production doesn't match the dollars they are being paid. After the guaranteed money, a contract isn't worth the paper it's written on. One also needs to understand how NFL contracts are structured. Because guaranteed money is spread across the cap, the tendency is to have extensions of long length to lower the cap hit. The problem is that the market moves in the meantime and players often outplay their extensions. A contract is pretty much over once the guaranteed money runs out. So early signing extensions are the players' way of restructuring contracts for their benefit. Just advocating for Thomas. He's a 2nd round pick that is playing like a Hall of Famer. He should get his money. And honestly I don't believe the Saints have a problem giving it to him. It's just a matter of crossing t's and dotting i's. I also believe there's a game of chicken going on between the Saints, Atlanta, Thomas, and Julio Jones, who is also trying to get his contract refreshed. Jones cannot sign any new deal before tomorrow (Friday) because the Clowns threw extra money at him last year and a deal has to hold for a calendar year before it can be amended. So whomever jumps last will probably get the best deal. SFIAH |

I feel too many of us fans only see situations like this from the fan's perspective. For NFL players, this is their livelihood, their business. It's a hell of a lot more important to take care of business as opposed to conditioning drills, practice reps, and preseason games. MT has absolutely nothing to prove to anyone on the practice field. I'd be perfectly happy if he sat training camp out just as long as he's ready for the Texans week one. That goes for Brees, Kamara, Jordan, Lattimore, and the like too. They just need to be ready and uninjured for the season. If taking a couple of days, or a couple of weeks off in the preseason accomplishes that, then that's great as far as I'm concerned. SFIAH |
Re: And so it begins...
Seems Mike Thomas signs first at $20mil/annum, and then Julio Jones who had better total raw yardage numbers...
Mike had one more touchdown, more catches, and a better catch rate/percentage... |

Alternatively the Saints could let him play out his contract and wind up in a bidding war with some team that decides they want to pay him 25 mil a year and build their offense around him. Right now the contract to beat is OBJ. Next year it could be someone else’s contract at a higher number. |

My pick is LJH.
We always wanted Anquan Boldin butnit never panned out. This could be the same type player. |

What makes it difficult for some of these DBs, LBs to make the squad is the guaranteed money paid to Banjo, Robertson who are non-starters, but logged many kick coverage snaps...

Re: And so it begins...
I'm waiting to see them with the pads on and see what shakes out, but there're three that intrigue me...
Porter Gustin, Devine Ozigbo, and Cyril Grayson... For whatever reason, we saw Trey's snaps decrease his second year, and the Saints need that third pass rusher for those Nascar Packages (Payton loves cross-sport-themed monikers)... Gustin, healthy, was good for a sack+ a game at USC, and has the size to play DE or the Jack in a 4-3 - he's a multiple front edge defender... Murray is a big man, but his burst is just adequate; as awesome as Kamara is, don't want to use him as a bowling ball (Ingram)... While Ozigbo will require coaching up coming from the Cornhuskers, he has terrific burst at the second level... Saints offense thrives with outside speed threat to tear the tops off of offenses; Devery got it done; never better with Cooks; Ginn just isn't always AVAILABLE... Grayson will have to show a good progression rate in his development, must have reliable hands, and win the return game job... With the speed he showed blowing past ALL the DBs in OTAs, he makes the squad, and the Saints have found their replacement for Ginn... |

Re: And so it begins...
Good. We could really use a guy like Kirkwood taking that next step this season. |
Re: And so it begins...
Not so much darkhorses, but I really want to see us get younger, now, on defense; that's why I'm put off with the guaranteed money to Banjo, Robertson - it all but guarantees them a roster spot before camp...
Gardner looks like the goods, can play safety as well as nickelback; Hampton has a bit of a challenge because of the above mentioned situation... |
Re: And so it begins...
Simmie Cobbs has a really good look at making the team. |
Re: And so it begins...
Devine Ozigbo with the fumble. |
Re: And so it begins...
There's no competition at C - it's McCoy's job to lose...
And right on cue, this happens, Oh well, that's what training camp is all about... |
