Payton's Play Calling

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; His play calling has become so vanilla. We used to have a lot of pre-snap motions, which created some confusion and allowed Brees to predict coverages. Granted, we don't have the weapons like we used to, but all the more ...

Payton's Play Calling

His play calling has become so vanilla. We used to have a lot of pre-snap motions, which created some confusion and allowed Brees to predict coverages. Granted, we don't have the weapons like we used to, but all the more reason to do whatever we can to keep the defense guessing.

Re: Payton's Play Calling

I didn't recognize the offense out there today, for at least 3 and a half quarters. I don't know what SP is doing, but it sure is getting old watching us bumble during the playoffs.

Re: Payton's Play Calling

If you go back and watch clips from the “glory days” of the Saints offense we had four competent WR’s (Colston, Henderson, Meachem and Moore) to go with two pass catching RB’s and a TE.

Our current offense is horrendous personnel-wise compared to that.

Don’t forget, you can’t just lose a guy like Max Unger and it not affect your interior line. ESPECIALLY someone with so much big game experience.

But I think really, in the Saints glory days, they had a better interior o-line. Which gives Brees the pocket to turn any WR into a star. Well, unless they’re complete trash and can’t catch anything whatsoever

The season started with drops.... the season ended with drops. It's the playoffs, you must catch the ball. Trequan Smith dropped one in his paws. Ginn redeemed himself... but this begs the question - where in the F was Jared Cook all game? He's been lights out the past 4 games but for some reason he sits on the sidelines and shows up late in the 4th quarter, hustles and gets wide open, hauls in some key catches, and then that's it. WE NEEDED HIM THE ENTIRE GAME!

Re: Payton's Play Calling

Payton refused to address the lack of a #2 or even a #3 receiver in the draft or free agency.

Deonte Harris should be included in the offense more, but Tre, Ginn and Kirkwood are not the answer.

Payton has to be prepared to pay up with a high pick for this to work, hes got stuck thinking every UDFA is the next great thing and they arent

The Brees and Brady both had similar issues, not enough weapons to use.

It’s true.

No becoming a star if you can’t catch a cold.

Forget speed, height, vertical, etc....CATCH the ball

Re: Payton's Play Calling

Brees handicaps Payton’s playbook now. He has no deep ball and when it goes deep it’s basically a pick waiting to happen. I don’t put it on Payton, thought play calling was ok. Clock management was poor at the end of regulation. You could blame Payton for not having the team pumped up or drinking to kool-aid, but didn’t have issue with play calling.

I don’t quite get this.. everything thrown to Cook was caught and he fought for yards... there were some bad balls tossed his way and still came down with them. Can’t catch balls that aren’t thrown.
