^^ upgrades are needed and necessary for 2020 at the "Z" position.

Ruggs
Reagor
"Viska"
JJefferson
Higgins ... what are the chances of any of these guys falling to #24.

Do the Saints bite?

We are not on par with the other 31 teams when it comes to the salary cap. We have this brilliant accountant who can kick money down the road knowing that the Cap grows each year and be creative with our finances. Making it happen is Mickey Loomis. He may not know football but he knows how to manipulate our contracts from accounting. Also, Jeff Ireland is our real GM.

55 - Kaden Elliss

Keep on eye on this guy. I hope his rehab went well.

Could be that sideline to sideline to guy in 2020.

Keep on eye on this guy. Hopefully his rehab went well this off season & he's only 24. Could be that sideline to sideline guy we need along side DDavis.

We've actually got a few Rover LBers on the roster who started as SS's, so I suspect Robertson's age, cap number may make him a salary cap casualty...

Bump ...

Just my opinion but the Saints secondary needs a make over ... 3 years in a row. Below avg IQ on the back end have knocked us out of post season contention. It's all or nothing in 2020. Some of these guys needs to step.

I hate to be "that guy" but Marcus Williams is becoming somewhat of a liability back there.

By the way, I hope we keep Janoris at the #2 spot this season.

Really believe it's been more scheme and the onus should be put squarely on Dennis Allen and not on Mr. Marcus for a couple of plays that swung the game the other way against us...

We can't be elite at every position unless we had perfect-storm drafts every year with a full complement of draft picks, but, and for what it's worth, a few grading services have graded Marcus Williams' play as elite...

Lack of a consistent even pass rush effort and failure to revert back to not running the ball, eating clock, giving the opponent less opportunities come playoff time is why we've been quick-outs...

I've never been impressed with DA as Def Coordinator. Ever.

As for Marcus, what is this year 3 in this system? The most fundamental things concern me with him.... tackling.

Love his work ethic but you can't continue to dip and tuck your head in the open field. Those bad habits should have been gone by now.

He's come up short in key moments 2 of the last 3 seasons & consistently late over the top. While his game recognition improved, his inability to diagnose quickly & capitalize has become a problem.

I guess what I'm saying is that I don't trust him in key, crucial moments in games.

Yeah, he just doesn't have the "it" factor and looks lost at critical times. I just don't think he's good under pressure. Too many gaffes for him to be considered elite......or even good.

Would definitely agree that our hitting & tackling still doesn't instill fear or even respect in our opponents - coming of age with the Dome Patrol set a high bar of my expectations...

RDE (3) 92 - Marcus Davenport ...

IMO Saints need to sign a mid tier type DE this off season. Marcus lack of availability has hurt us 2 seasons and counting. Shimmy Sheldon is not far behind.

Saints front office brass spent a lot of draft capital only to see them in street clothes late in the season .. 2 1st rounders.

The aforementioned guys have simply spent too much time on IR.

jeanpierre 03-11-2020 10:39 AM

Re: 2020 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook

It's not that Payton was wrong in prioritizing DE, it's the overspending of draft capital into too few players and not trusting the scouting film more to use more role players as the Patriots do successfully...

Is our pass rush good enough? If A.J. Epenesa were there at Pick 24, do we take him?

IMO it isn't but we only have 5 picks in the 2020 draft :(.

I could see us going after a mid tier DE/rotational pass rusher in Free Agency. Guys like Judon and Shaq Lawson could make an "impact" similar to what Okafor did while in New Orleans.

I'm probably wrong but pick #24 screams WR. Brees needs more "threats" on offense not named Michael Thomas.

Fix the GUARD position with a mean, nasty mofo and a legit WR target in the slot ... we're cooking with gas again on offense. Shades of 2011.

To piggy back on the post above ...

I'm ok with not having a 2nd round pick (trade w/Mia/moved up for McCoy) this season. A solid rookie campaign, smart, stayed relatively healthy and could become as good as if not better than Unger.

Dominoes, it started when we traded too much to move up to take Davenport...

Situation: A.J. Epenesa falls to us at No. 24, do you pull the trigger?

I would. Elite pass rushers with his ability are hard to find at this level.

My spider senses tell me no way AJ falls to 24 but then again no one expected a stud lineman (Ramz) to drop either.

Reason why I point this out, recognizing many similarities, in so far as the player position rankings, to the 2011 NFL Draft when we took Cam Jordan at No. 24...

Epenesa reminds me of Cam Jordan is measurables, playing style, et cetera...
