You just argued that draft picks were making the roster, and I pointed out to you where Pittman was gone and P.T. was kept as the season got underway, you made my argument...

That's the importance of training camp, preseason games, as guys are giving opportunities some rise and some fall...

Thomas was considered a camp body, and as TC and PreSeason wore on, it was apparent who was the better RB...

If any team has shown you don't idly discount anyone on the roster, it's the New Orleans Saints...

JP, no where did I say that draft picks were making the roster. You appear to have totally missed my point. You first showed concern about preseason rosters being reduced by ten (10) players. I mentioned that those bottom ten never had a shot of making the final 53 plus practice squad based upon what I have heard from numerous GM's. You then listed a number of late rounders and UDFA's that made the Saints final roster. But, I said those players would have all been inside that top 80 beginning camp. And EVERY draft pick would be in that top 80, for sure. You're not going to cut a player you just drafted prior to training camp, or even the first cut. Both Pittman AND Thomas survived the cut to 75 that year. Pittman made the final 53, but was replaced by Thomas a few days later.

As for Thomas being considered a camp body, sure he was. So were about 35-40 others. But, there are camp bodies that only have a small chance of making the roster, yet a chance, and there are camp bodies that the team knows has no chance whatsoever to make the roster and are truly there for filling a spot in drills and preseason games. None of the players you mentioned would have been close to that last group.

I agree that training camp is vital to identify those bubble players. But, given the lack of preseason games AND the need to "socially distance" in locker rooms and meetings every team in the NFL can easily remove ten of their 90 that have no chance whatsoever of making the squad.

Back to draft picks making the roster ...

You know my history of de-emphasizing the draft to a degree. I have pointed out on MANY occasions that only 35% of all drafted players AND undrafted free agents make the initial 53 man roster on average per year in the NFL.

Same difference. And the perennial winners draft annually better than that 35%...

And again, ask Zach and he'll tell you he and others didn't think he was making out of the first week of training camp, he would've been in that 80-90 group, then...

But he found his inner strength, and his story is Saints legend and lore now...

Regardless of what HE thought, there was no way the team was going to cut him if they were forced to go to the 80 player figure. They will ALWAYS give a drafted player every chance possible.

Given perennial winners draft better than 35% that means several teams annually draft players that make the roster at even a lower percentage for the overall average to be 35%.

Besides, the 80 player limit must be met August 30, meaning 90 players in camp for the first full month plus. It's simply not a big deal at all. They were cutting back to 75 back when Strief was drafted before that date.

With Wick opting out, the Saints currently have 89 players under contract, so some of them won’t have much of a shot at making an impression before things heat up on the practice field. The August 30th date was obviously moved up from what I read earlier. That said, as the article also states, there are players that still have no shot even prior to camp starting.

Actually it is 88 players currently because both of the veteran FA TEs, Jason Vander Laan and Cole Wick, took the Wuhan Opt-out cash money...

Yup. That's what most will be. Players that knew they had little chance of making the cut anyway. Free money. The Saints now only have eight players they need to cut in three weeks. Chances are they reach that through attrition.

This week is testing only. They have to test negative twice with three day between tests. Loomis said yesterday they have had no positive test results at all so far. Kind of surprising, but heard the same about several other teams this morning. They won't be admitted into the facility until next week for any other purposes.

Chatted with a few Saints beat reporters, while it will be more difficult with the NFL and its roster sizes, the NFL is legit hard-core focused on establishing a "bubble" so as to minimize spread and contact tracing...

Now what the NFL says and what actually happens, well, that's open to debate, but as AG posted re: the CBA CCPVirus Addendum, that's the mission statement status quo for the NFL at this time...

Thanks and Yeah, usually Hagan and I would coordinate via DMs so we kept the thread pumped with talking points that'd get participation and try to defuse folks from allowing great passion become too venomous...

This year is gonna be pretty dynamic and in flow as we see how this #CCPVirus can change the landscape quickly...

Have already reached out to a few of the generous Saints reporters for their thoughts and like us they are bewildered by what is happening and just as unsure how events will unfold, but they all agree - we need football...

@Nick_Underhill has written a piece tonight about Sean Payton setting the tone early for the season in his presser today...

I managed to get myself blocked by @SeanPayton early this year with some light-hearted jabs, but truthful, honest, and accurate reminders to him of what he's said in the past and inconsistencies in what he's done...

So I appreciated Nick's article addressing the focused Sean Payton...

Ya' think? The NFL required this months ago. The NFL appears to be lightyears ahead of MLB in operating under these conditions.

In this case the NFL has FAR more to lose than any other professional sport. Even if no fan sets foot in a stadium this year they are still looking at over $8,000,000,000 in revenue. Not to mention record TV ratings that are expected. They are pulling out all the stops. You probably have less of a chance of contracting the virus at work as an NFL player than any other profession. No other mainstream job would be able to spend the money that the NFL has to have such stringent protocols. I'm sure every Kroger doesn't have on-site testing to clear every employee and customer before entering the door.

We're getting closer to seeing action boys. I'm oh so ready to start jumping up off my couch for good or bad plays from the players....even the refs.

I just read that we released Deatrick Nichols. That was fast. Almost as fast as I was to think he would ball for us. I definitely missed on that one...again. I sure can create high expectations anywhere there is hope.

I’m just glad that our roster hasn’t changed much from last year. A lot of teams who have restructured position groups or added a few key players in the off season are going to have problems at first. Especially those who have mixed up their offensive line and secondary.

If we have a season, the familiarity will be advantageous for the Saints. Actually, was surprised to see Payton release the number of veterans he had at the 80-man cut instead of Rookie UDFAs, especially DBs...

He already knows what he has with those veterans. He hasn't seen the rookies yet. He can always call them back later.

Yes he is. I was wanting to catch him on it, but had to do some chemical balancing in the pool.

Temperature going from almost 100 degrees and then getting two inches of acidic rain in about three hours plays hell with a pool's chemical balance. That and trying to keep the temp down at all. I run a fountain pump every night trying to get it comfortable. It's supposed to get down to around 70 the next two nights here so I hope to get the pool temp down to at worst 85. Crossing my fingers.
