I can think of plenty of top CBs that aren't extremely physical. It really just depends on the style of CB they happen to be, although I think that any young CB with comparable measurables to Tracy Porter will come in and have some concerns like that, but I don't read too much into it.

This is why I've been talking about all along. We've been saying that all we really need is a better defensive line to get pressure on the QB, but that doesn't fix the problem completely. You have to have good CBs that fit your scheme, and Tracy Porter is that guy. Usama will be that guy. Now we're set imo.

Just for kicks, lets look at the top 5 pass defenses last year and check out how they pressured the quarterback.

1.) Tampa Bay -- Tampa Bay had not only a solid pass rush, but they have capable CBs. These things go hand in hand, and its why Tampa Bay was so good against the pass.

2.) Indianapolis -- Indy has a great pass rush, and a good secondary.

3.) Pittsburgh -- The Steelers have pass rushing LBs as well as solid DEs, combined with their average CBs is good enough for a top 5 against he pass ranking.

4.) Miami -- Miami has a solid pass rush large in part due to Jason Taylor, and young, active cornerbacks. They were the worst team in Football last year, but not because they couldn't stop the pass. This is a prime example of a bad team thats good against the pass because of a premier DE.

5.) Kansas City -- Read Miami. Jared Allen averages over 1 sack per game he played in last year and was constantly harassing the QB. Textbook example here.

30.) New Orleans -- in 2007 the Saints had an average DL with old, passive DTs and DEs who played through injury and never could get anything started, due to the lack of help from the middle of the field (DT). With no pass rush on the QB and mediocre CBs who didn't tackle well, combined with passive LBs who also didn't get to the QB, and you have a recipe for disaster.

this year we upgraded our pass rush by miles, and have CBs maturing into bigger roles. I smell success.

We got exactly what we needed. More pressure on the QB, help in the secondary.
I don't think you can say that all you need is a dline, if that was the case I would've tried to unseat David last year. Your corner's must fit your system. I think we will see a completely revamped D.

these corners (McKenzie/Usama/Porter) all are going to fit our system or already do, and our pass rush is going to be stellar compared to last year.

Re: Has disappointment set in?

i think the 2nd wasnt a great pick but it was "ok". i dont think he will have that big of an impact this year as a CB but he could definetly be our KR and PR. i think will see a lil playing time as a CB but probably only a few plays at the end of a few games.. even tho we dont have the best corners in the world... they all have experience and that makes a world of difference.. Porter isnt going to come in and be our nickle.. he will likely be our gunner on special teams, just like usama did last year...

that being said, i think its a pretty good pick for the future of the franchise, but for me i would have rathered the instant upgrade at TE with shockey.. we are really close to being one of the best teams in the NFC all around and he would have made a big impact on offense THIS YEAR while porter likely wont have any impact at all on this season..

Ha ha ha ha ha what?????

What better cornerbacks do you think we could have taken? The next cornerback was taken with the 4th to last pick in the second round. Obviously there was a gap between Porter and the next best cornerback (Patrick Lee of Auburn). I think that they took the best corner on the board at the time.

And I'm sorry but there's no way that Dorsey is better than Ellis. If you watched Dorsey when he was healthy you'd know he was the best defensive player in the country, hands down.

Sedrick isn't as good as Dorsey, but he's damn good.

True, I'm not arguing that point at all. Ellis is a beast and I couldn't be happier with him being in black and gold. The future is bright! Imagine this starting DLine: Charles Grant, Hollis Thomas, Sedrick Ellis, Will Smith. Then mix in Bryan Young and DeMario Pressley. Booyah.

A perfect world would have this D-Line letting opposing QB's get a good look at the roof of the Dome all day from their backs.
