What a year to end up with 2 picks in the first 148.
They'll end up trading away next years 1st to get back into the 2nd round or a 2nd to get into the 3rd and some people will tell you it's clever management.

Too many holes to not overspend to fill. Poor selections on high picks the last few years haven't helped.

LSU Pro day is today.

ALL of the Saints brass need to be there.

Saints need talent & a lot of the Tigers transition well to the NFL.

Jordan Morgan - T
Arizona

6-5, 311
Senior Bowl participant

Very consistent on the left side, good technique, but not super athletic. In 2023, he wins one on one. Lateral agility stands out.

Late Day 1, early Day 2 projections

Without a clear starter at LT, RT and G, I could see trading up from 45 to grab a day one O lineman.

I would like to see us trade back to grab a 5th pick in the 5th round. We could use depth at oline, dline, receiver, te, rb, lb, etc. If we spend two 5ths on TE, I think we are historically more likely to get an all pro caliber player than if we take Bowers.

Jordan Howden and AT Perry (technically a 6th) both had higher PFF scores than Bryan Bresee last year, and there are no limits to the great players we could get in the 5th.

With the depth at tackle in the draft, this is the first year in a long time the saints may trade back.

Word is my man, D.J. Burns of NC State doesn't translate well to the NBA, but could make a successful transition to the NFL. It's been done before. He's 6'9" and 275 pounds. He extremely quick with great hands and footwork. Very strong.

Re: Official 2024 Saints Draft Discussion

How many starting jobs left to fill for Saints?

https://saintswire.usatoday.com/list...024-nfl-draft/

Offensive line: 3

Current projected starter(s): Trevor Penning, James Hurst, Erik McCoy, Cesar Ruiz, Landon Young

This is a mess. Ryan Ramczyk couldn’t play a game tomorrow at right tackle after undergoing knee surgery, and the slower-than-expected recovery may keep him out for all of 2024. Trevor Penning needs to earn the left tackle job after being benched last season. James Hurst was a liability at left guard, too. The Saints could justify draft picks at any (or all three of) those positions. Right now, their top priority should be finding a top-tier tackle at either side of the line in the first round. The question is where to look first.

My take with three weeks until Round 1 kicks off:

Ideally we find a starter at tackle in the draft and it could be Left or Right.

At pick 14, I'm leaning drafting a Right Tackle like Fuaga or Latham to replace Ram.

Sign Mekhi Beckton to battle Penning at LT. It'll cost $10M per year. Minimum.

Resign Peat to play LG. Probably over-pay, but it is what it is.

Starting line: Beckton, Peat, McCoy, Ruiz, Fuaga/Latham.
Reserves: Penning, Young, Saldiveri, Late Round Pick

Then your line is set for 2024 with an emphasis on running.

He can move for a big man. Reminds me of Big Baby of LSU. Wish him well. And congrats for the entire NCSt men and women on fantastic BB seasons. I am pulling for the NCSt girls to pull it off.

Re: Official 2024 Saints Draft Discussion

I hate to sound like a broken record, but almost all our effort should be put into finding a LT, LG, and RT via the draft. I’m taking two tackles and a guard as early as possible. We need to let Peat walk, but if he comes back they need to keep him at LT. He looks better there. Truth be told, we need to improve at both G positions but they gave Ruiz a bag so he’s there to stay. We need to be looking for Jahri Evans and Carl Nicks then the rest would fall into play. Guard-Center-Guard is the most important to me. It allows your QB to step up in the pocket and also gives you the ability to run the ball down the throat of a defense at will. It’s a MUST we have an elite offensive line. Better look at what Detroit did and how much they’re able to get out of Goff now because he has time.

I’ll be shocked if we don’t go offense line @#14.

Ramz should be filling out retirement papers & Penning smells like bust material.

Only dawg left is Eric McKoy.

Saints need a lot in 2024.

I agree 100% and a formidable O line elevates QB play.

In reference to elevating Penning's skill set, is there any coach that comes to mind that's sort of a G/T whisperer?

He's a strange situation. All of his measurables showed he should be a solid plug and play LT.

The skills and athleticism is there. It just hasn't clicked for him yet. Hopefully a new O-line coach can find the right buttons to push.

I was reading about Doug Marrone's coaching style being described as very "old school".

He'd shout and cuss you to the point of demoralization if you made mistakes or weren't meeting his standards.

Could a new approach in coaching help him? Not sure as there seemed to plenty of poor technique on film.

I will say this - the old school way of coaching seems to be less effective today. Coaches who can connect with players on a deeper level seem to be getting the best from their guys.

Re: Official 2024 Saints Draft Discussion

Found this and it's spot on with what we've seen on the field:

https://www.profootballnetwork.com/t...g-report-2022/

Quote:

Penning’s base isn’t always steady when anchored. He can lose his balance against longer opponents. He also fails to maintain his balance through offensive maneuvers at times. This can impact his ability to sustain blocks at the second level. Moreover, he can work to better counteract force with his feet. His feet sometimes stop moving, and once that happens, he can easily be worked around or worked into with power.

As good as Penning’s center of gravity is, he does play a bit lopsided at times. His extension timing could be better, and Penning also plays too tall too often. While he has decent knee bend capacity, he sometimes bends at the waist and struggles to attain proper leverage. Rushers can easily get under him and force him to lurch.

Going further, Penning can absorb power, but he doesn’t always sustain blocks when he can’t make first contact. Penning’s grip strength — while solid — can be broken with forceful moves, and he keeps his hands too wide, opening up his torso. Additionally, there is some stiffness present when he needs to recover laterally. His feet are a bit heavy at times, although he generally moves well.

Among other notes, Penning’s hand precision still has some room for improvement, and his hands and feet can have better synergy. Penning can be grabby and penalty-prone when he loses leverage, and he sometimes goes too far with his nasty attitude after the snap.

I'd still like to address the oline in Free Agency.

Dalton Risner comes to mind or Mekhi Bekton (former Jet).

Or bring back Andrus Peat. He was kicked out to LT last season and played decent.

If we feel better about our QB coach than our oline coach perhaps we should swap Penning for Zach Wilson. It seems like they are in similar positions needing similar breakthroughs to click.

Our o-line coach, John Benton, is new to us this season. Our new senior assistant, Rick Dennison, has a reputation of developing offensive linemen sending six to the Pro Bowl as an o-line coach and offensive coordinator. He's also spent four years with Kubiak so he knows what Kubiak is looking to get out of his linemen in this offense. I'm excited at what we could see this season. We may have more already on hand than some believe.

Fuaga
Fashauna
Powers-Johnson
Latham
Mims
Fatanu
Guyton
Morgan

There is a good chance 95% of the guys listed here will be available @ #14. Most are projected as Day 1 starters.

The OL talent pool is deep in 2024.
