So what Nick is really saying is that the Saints cannot afford to miss on either of their first two draft picks.

Or bring back Andrus Peat. He was kicked out to LT last season and played decent.

Love Peat... when he can stay healthy he's solid at LT. But if he's not reliable to start, what do we have?

There is a good chance 95% of the guys listed here will be available @ #14. Most are projected as Day 1 starters.

The OL talent pool is deep in 2024.

Olu Fashanu is the guy for me. He’s one of the only ones projected to be a sure-fire, LT. If he’s not there at 14 I’d say move back a few spots, pick up some extra picks, and draft J.C. Latham or one of the other projected RT’s. Then I’d pick up somebody like Patrick Paul in the 2nd round if he’s there.

That's where our new offensive coaching staff comes into play. We've got Penning and new FA Oli Udoh from the Vikings at LT. Odoh was with several of our new staff in Minnesota. They undoubtedly had some input in his signing. He also played four years of RT in college and some RG with the Vikings.

We've got Nick Saldiveri at either guard position. I'm excited about what the new staff can do to bring both he and Penning along.

We've also got second year Mark Evans at guard or tackle that can be lumped in with those that may make a leap this year. Throw in Hurst, Landon Young, and Tommy Kraemer.

Not to mention McCoy and Ruiz that can swing to center if needed.

I believe what we do in the draft depends heavily on what that new staff believes they can do with what we already have in-house.

Fashanu hasn't allowed a sack in 328 snaps in 2023! That's the definition of a Brick Wall! Wow!

I disagree that the Saints can't afford to miss on either of their first two picks. It's completely possible to offset a miss on an early pick by hitting on a late pick. If we keep all four of our 5th rounders and one of those 5th rounders is the next Carl Nicks or Jahri Evans, or we find a Kittle or Purdy or Colston, but we miss on the 1st rounder, we will be fine. Any pick can be a miss, but by convincing yourself you 'can't afford to miss' on a particular pick you end up trading up to get a 'can't miss' player that doesn't exist, and missing the opportunity for second or third chances. I would say the Saints can't afford to limit their opportunities by trading away picks.

Ben Sinnot
TE - K State

Solid run blocker, route running & makes the contested catches.
Versatile player that LOVES to block.

Day 3 grades

Saints need an upgrade at TE.

How many starting jobs left to fill for Saints?

https://saintswire.usatoday.com/list...024-nfl-draft/

Offensive line: 3

Current projected starter(s): Trevor Penning, James Hurst, Erik McCoy, Cesar Ruiz, Landon Young

This is a mess. Ryan Ramczyk couldn’t play a game tomorrow at right tackle after undergoing knee surgery, and the slower-than-expected recovery may keep him out for all of 2024. Trevor Penning needs to earn the left tackle job after being benched last season. James Hurst was a liability at left guard, too. The Saints could justify draft picks at any (or all three of) those positions. Right now, their top priority should be finding a top-tier tackle at either side of the line in the first round. The question is where to look first.

My take with three weeks until Round 1 kicks off:

Ideally we find a starter at tackle in the draft and it could be Left or Right.

At pick 14, I'm leaning drafting a Right Tackle like Fuaga or Latham to replace Ram.

Sign Mekhi Beckton to battle Penning at LT. It'll cost $10M per year. Minimum.

Resign Peat to play LG. Probably over-pay, but it is what it is.

Starting line: Beckton, Peat, McCoy, Ruiz, Fuaga/Latham.
Reserves: Penning, Young, Saldiveri, Late Round Pick

Then your line is set for 2024 with an emphasis on running.

I thought Peat played better at LT than he did at guard. I can't even believe I'm typing those words.

Peat was never as bad as some claimed. He came into his first camp somewhat "dumpy", for sure. Because of that some have rode him hard with things like the cruel Popeye's jokes. Since then he has always been in much better shape, but has experienced more than his share of injuries. His time at guard has, once again, been judged by one play that resulted in our franchise QB suffering a serious injury himself.

https://sportshub.cbsistatic.com/i/r...hkvaaa3psp.jpg

One factor to remember is that the player that beat Peat to get to Brees was arguably the greatest player to ever play his position and EVERYONE that Aaron Donald faced got beat on a regular basis.

Re: Official 2024 Saints Draft Discussion

I watch every game, just like you. I know what I saw, and it was often times Peat whiffing a block or being put on his ass by a DL. I'm trying to give him a compliment, as he actually exceeded my expectations when moving to LT. Maybe he should have never been moved to guard in the first place.

Not being available on just as bad as blown assignments if not worse because the player isn't on the field

Be honest with yourself here. Outside of exceding expectations at LT this past year, he's graded out poorly in almost, if not every single year he's been here. I understand the fact you are a sunshine pumper and there's nothing wrong with that. At least attempt to be a little objective. It'll go a long way. What people need to understand in defense to Peat is that he didn't make the Saints give him that contract. He would have been stupid not to sign it.

We need a tackle with one of our first two picks if we don't sign someone in free agency.

I never once implied that Peat was anything more than average. I only pointed out that he has been more than serviceable when healthy. Injuries are part of the game and something that should not be blamed on the individual athlete. And, as you so accurately put it, you cannot rightly blame a a player for agreeing to a contract he has been offered.

Re: Official 2024 Saints Draft Discussion

Keon Coleman - WR
Florida St

6’3, had 11 TDs & also returns punts.
Would fit in with Olave, Shaheed.

Potentially Day 2 target.

Sleeper 1st rounder …

Graham Barton
OL - Duke

6’5, quick, super athletic & checks a lot of boxes in every category.
Has played both center and LT in college.
Versatility and play a lot of spots on the line.

K Major 04-09-2024 12:12 PM

Re: Official 2024 Saints Draft Discussion

Christian Mahogany
OG
Boston College

Gave up zero QB hits and zero sacks in 2023.
9.63 RAS out of possible 10.
Has a visit scheduled for N.O.

2nd and 3rd projection.

I know most here are already aware but since we're spit-balling trades here's one version of the NFL Trade Value Chart to consider:

https://www.drafttek.com/NFL-Trade-V...RequestTeam=no

Saints have an estimated 1,600 pts in draft "capital".

The jump from say 150 to 61 looks less realistic now

The Saints have a lot of holes. If your BPA in RD 2 is a WR, you select him. And when I say BPA, Im referring to immediate (Olave, Werner, Bresee) contributors. No more projects.

Saints were DEAD LAST in YAC for 2023. We could use a BIG body WR, guys who can make contensted catches. Kubiak has run systems on short passes so YAC is critical.

For the record, I hope we take a OL @ 14. Day 2 though .. ? Who knows where the Saints are going with that pick.
