Jerzhan Newton
DT - Illinois

Has crazy upper body strength
3 tech
Over 100 pressures (most in FBS) in 2 seasons
2 time All American
Very good Pro Day (Saints scouts were in attendance)
Projected as a first year starter

Negatives

Short arms
Somewhat inconsistent with pad level
Pro comparison - Javon Hargraves

Some scouts predict bottom of first rd or EARLY day 2 selection

Our roster is already loaded with high RAS players. We need to upgrade our RAS at head coach and GM.

Re: Official 2024 Saints Draft Discussion

Byron Murphy II
DT
Texas

My analysis is somewhat biased here. He was a wrecking show here in Dallas (Desoto High) & a disruptor down at Texas.
Has scored TWICE on offense, once rushing & once RECEIVING.

Big 12 DL of the year

We’ve ALL seen what happens when you bring heat up the middle.
Instant pressure can blow up run and passing games. Byron has shown the consistent ability to destroy pockets & take QBs off their spots.

Super talented & eager to learn and get better.

Not sure if he makes it to Day 2, but if so I’d be curious to see what the Saints do if he is there @ pick 45.

Would be floored if he drops to 45, but I know crazy things happen on draft day. I covet both him and Newton and would not be mad if either was our day one pick. I know we need o line talent, but there’s some to be had in the later rounds. Either one of those guys paired with Bresee would draw some attention to those young studs and leave some opportunities for our DE’s to eat

Maybe we should close the cafeteria two days before they play so that they are famished and ready to eat!

Erick All
TE
Iowa

Probably the second best route (behind Bowers) runner
Slot type TE | natural hands
Transferred from Michigan as a JR.
Good zone blocker

5th - 7th rd grades

If Caleb Williams fell to the Saints, would anyone here want him?

(I wouldn't touch him with BostonSaints ten foot pole)

I'm not sure if he'll make it to number 14.

Could be a smokescreen but Loomis sounds as if trading up (he mentioned moving up 6 or back) isn’t out of the question & they could select another position besides OT?

Doesn’t appear as though they are done in Free Agency as well.

Re: Official 2024 Saints Draft Discussion

Well James Hurst has just retired so that leaves a offensive line something like

Penning - Saldiveri - McCoy - Ruiz - Young

and a reserve of

Udoh - Evans - X - X- Kramer

And a broken Ramczyk who at best will probably start the season on IR, if not miss the whole season and retire next year

So it going to be O-line early and should be often. Don't think they can mess around and trade back and take a more project and hope for more picks.

So, it seems that most are expecting a OL pick in the first round...

BUT....

if Nix or Penix fall to 14, do you take them?

Penix better be able to run and avoid contact if they drafted him over a lineman. Because that line would be lucky to stop a college team

James Hurst hasn’t been all that great last several seasons.

The timing of this announcement is crazy though.

Dude ran an unofficial 4.46/ 40! That's legit speed. Word is he looks for the throws and rarely runs. But if he can be taught WHEN to run (ie. Jackson) he's going to be special.

I think Penix will fall close to, or into the 2nd round. No world in which I’d draft Bo Nix.

Re: Official 2024 Saints Draft Discussion

God help us we better not trade our 2025 1st round pick. We have the kind of offensive line that could make that pick #1 overall if things dont go our way, and even if we can trade it to move up to a second first rounder late in the round or move up a few spots this first round, nobody we can draft is a guarantee to solve all our oline problems instantly. When the levee is about to breach, thats nots when you cancel the insurance policy for one extra sandbag.

I just read a report that OT Troy Fautana has a medical flag 😔.

Specifically a knee issue that could impact his longevity.

Some have mocked him to N.O.

We may need to trade with Denver to get Fuaga.

100pt difference. Basically a 5th this year and 4th next.

Fine by me.

I predict that whoever ends up with Daniels wins the draft. He’s as sure a thing at QB since Payton Manning IMO. He’s Dan Marino mixed with Michael Vick. Especially with the way the NFL is played today. Just my opinion of course.

The ceiling is there to be that. Would be exciting to see him get there.

Better than Joe B IMO. His game is made to translate to the NFL. I kind of hope he slips to the Patriots here at the third pick. It would give me a reason to start pulling for them.

Tonight it'd be great if we execute the perfect keyboard combination:

Ctrl-Alt-Del-P

That's Control (Draft) (Joe) Alt and Delete Penning

Re: Official 2024 Saints Draft Discussion

With the Saints dire situation at oline, I also think it would be reasonable to consider trading young highly valuable players at deeper positions for extra draft picks. I do no want to trade future draft picks because those are valued a lot less.

It the Saints traded Adebo or Olave for an additional 1st round pick, it might be a crushing blow to lose a player like that, but it might also be a net gain. It might even make sense to trade Bresee for a similar pick to take an oline. Ultimately I would trust Lattimore and Taylor or even Shaheed and Perry to hold down the fort more than I trust Penning, Saldiveri, and Young. Ultimately a 2025 1st round draft pick trades at a 50% discount to a 2024 pick, but young players are worth more in trade than they will be later, and the Saints have had past success trading fan favorites like Graham, Cooks, or Williams for 1st round picks. I don't believe Lattimore has significant trade value.

Re: Official 2024 Saints Draft Discussion

I know you guys have been waiting for my picks so here goes:
#14 Olu Fashanu OT Penn State
#45 Bo Nix QB Oregon
We won’t trade Lattimore either! Makes no sense to get rid of him and then Draft another one!

He would be a great pick in my opinion. If they keep penning and he develops like they planned he would, we’d have two nasty book end tackles
