a recipe for success is taking the points

our offense struggles but our defense was playing well.......let the points accumulate slowly and add up.....our defense will hold them but only for so long....do we take the points then give the ball back, or miss the 4th down play and then give the ball back?

always always take the points

If we kick it, we get three instead of seven.
when we turned it over on downs, Sanchez fumbled in the end zone and we got seven. If I'm coaching, there isn't many situations I dont go for it from the 1 yd line.

Goal line call was not really that bad. As it turned out kept them pinned near the goal line and resulted in 7 points anyway. May have been some luck there. Against more powerful offenses I would lean toward taking the points though. Can't argue with the play calling. The Saints are finally being smart and taking what the oposition is giving them instead of forcing the ball like we did last year. Thw "W" is what matters most no matter how it is achieved. Just WIN baby!

In many (most?) cases, I'd agree... take the points. But the Saints' D had been playing well so far. And with the Jets having a pretty good record at 3-0, I was all for trying to stretch the lead as much as possible.

There are times to kick, and there are times to go for it. In my opinion, that was a "Go for it" moment... a situation where an aggressive attitude and an aggressive call was appropriate.

You also have to consider where you're giving the ball back. By not making the TD, N.O. gave it back at the goal line... given the circumstances I'd mentioned, something good should (and did) come out of that.

If, at that point, they let the Jets drive all the way down and score, they deserved it. I figured, worse case for the Saints, Jets would go 3 and out, punt from the end zone and give N.O. possesion Jets territory. But, my guess was wrong... The D came up with a big play and scored.

hell....as a fan i was screaming at my tv....i wanted them to go for it so bad and make the jets play catch up the rest of the game.....but the coach in me was saying, be smart....take the points...we'll need them later

Re: Offensive Playcall Concerns

i dont get why ya'll are complaining about payton's play calls. HELLO!? we are 4-0! i'm happy payton isnt calling these stupid double reverses when we're trying to run the ball to close out the game! i've always loved payton, but, hated how he tried to get too cute sometimes. he's playing conservative, for the most part, and playing smart. i'm happy. why do we need to score 40 points a game when our defense is playing so well? why not make it easy, and just run the ball! it's working! in the third quarter i was saying, we might as well just keep running it. they're stopping the pass, but, not the run. go w/ what works! the run was working yesterday. even reggie, to start the game, was 3 attempts for 39 yards yesterday!

as far as going for it on 4th and goal, it was the right thing to do. i was telling my friends, we are gonna go for it. it just made sense. we had a 10 point lead, our defense was playing well, so, why not? even if we didnt punch it in, the jets would have the ball on the one yard line, so, when it didnt work i was thinking, ok, safety time! turns out even better when we got 7 points instead of two!
