in that case, we'll more than likely draft a receiver. Its no secret we need to get younger at that position.

Is there any way we pick up a guy like Branden Albert or is the cost to steep?

Reynolds of Stanford?!? He's a second rounder, can't see him falling all the way at the end of the third round...

But it would be an effective secondary for sure...

Re: Free agents 2014

i have dampened my emotions on fA. Jimmy has early reports in that he played over 60% of his snaps standing up as a WR. That is huge. now we are talking a tag of over $10 million. he becomes a WR.

If this is true the draft will have to be huge for the saints.

so what waterboy out there do you think we should go after?

lee909 02-16-2014 08:09 AM

Re: Free agents 2014

I do not see him playing under the tag.
there will be arguments both sides on what position he needs to be tagged under. He will be signed to a long term deal or be traded imo.A WR tag is far too high for us to pay

New Orleans Saints Salary Cap - 2014 Breakdown

To retain Graham, we might have to cut the following players to get under the cap:

RB Darren Sproles $3,500,000
RB Pierre Thomas $2,300,000
WR Lance Moore $2,531,250

And have room to sign our restricted free agents, mainly S Rafael Bush...

Know he's looked at as the Golden Calf, but why not designate him with the non-exclusive option and see if a team is willing to give up two first round picks?!?

We could solidify the offensive line in free agency with that money and have a number of options available at Tight End in the draft...

Damn, The contracts of Grubbs, Lofton have been huge mistakes...

$10,450,051 in dead money, dam that jumped there. oh well who do we cut next.

better get some picks because their wont be any one left just to keep a handful of players. 7 on 7 anyone?

Vulnerable/Salary Cap Casualty

- Currently have $5,182,990 of salary cap space

- Jimmy Graham is the big kahuna before the Saints right now with a little more than a week to get a deal done before he may be tagged...

- The already thin offensive line is without an experienced starting center, right tackle...

- Saints representatives and representatives for Robert Meachem look to be close to a new contract...

- The defensive line looks like it will return, intact, with the exception of Tom Johnson; and we'll be up against the cap with a Cam Jordan decision next year...

- Very thin again at Linebacker and still the little cap room

- Thin at safety, with only Vaccaro under contract and Bush a restricted free agent?!?

- Can Patrick Robinson come back healthy? Is he a starter?

I wanted Spencer last year. He was wasted in Deathstar nation last season and would be solid in Rob's system. He would greatly improve our run stopping D.

You want picks for Graham? Let him walk.

What would he be worth in compensatory picks? 3rd rounder

Should he be franchised with non-exclusive tag, the compensation currently is two first rounders - provided the tag holds...

I'd be happy if we could negotiate a first and a third round pick in this draft (if they're in the front halves of the rounds)...

Any way you cut it, the Saints can't sign, or keep, any other players when nearly 60 million of the salary cap will be committed to five (5) players, including a signing of Graham...

And try trading him and that albatross of a possible contract when he continues to break down or continues to "not" produce in "big" games...

Here is my wash and hesitation with the non-exclusive tag..... It's lower than the exclusive tag so here are the possibilities.

1. He doesn't ink a deal with another team, you just lowballed the sh1t out of him and that WILL effect his performance and morale for an entire season. You also risk souring the locker room because of how you lowballed him. He is well liked.

2. Have you ever heard of a team picking up a player on the non-exclusive? I can't find any evidence of it. Play GM for a minute, you are going to have to give him what he wants for him to ink, so that costs you 11m/year AND 2 first round draft picks. You going to give that up for Jimmy Graham?

3. What if he refuses to sign the NE tag? You just soured JG, the locker room, and didn't get a damn thing from it.

Or you let him walk as an RFA with a First round tender and see what you get. Plus a compensatory pick the following season.

Re: Free agents 2014

non-exclusive tag does not seem to produce the fear it once did.

look at the picks the rams got from washington or the cleveland trade with the colts.

Collective bargaining agreement and the rookie cap has changed every thing. i think thats why teams no longer use it as much

I think this would be the would be the first time a player like graham would get that tag since the new Collective bargaining agreement has been put in place.

I hope we are only "kicking the tires" with Delmas. Is he an upgrade over Harper or Jenkins? Not so sure he is but that past knee issue concerns me more than anything.

Totally agree. He's a quality football player and he gave some spark and pop at MLB when he was afforded an opportunity...

Probably because he's faster than Lofton which even the Falcons knew and we somehow ignored...

Thinking we might be able to get this guy on the cheap, would be nice to have a vet if Moore is really going to get cut:

Jason Avant, WR for the Philadelphia Eagles at NFL.com

Always liked Avant. He is a chain-mover. Plays a lot like David Patten, if you're looking for a recent Saints analogue.
