This is what I'm thinking: The RedWing owner, Mike Illitch, has a boatload of money & the Wings have a ton of capspace ... Illitch has shown in the past he will bring in marquee players & pay them; ie Larry Murphy, Mike Modano, Luc Robatille, Dominic Hasek, Curtis Joseph, Wendel Clark, Chris Chelios, the list goes on and most recently Prince Fielder with the Tigers (Illitch owns them too) ... Detroit is a 'destination' city in the NHL, star players have always come here with the goal of winning a Stanley Cup, many take less money also,
... that's how we land Parise.
In regards to a defenseman, they'll go after Ryan Suter/Nashville and I think the Wings are going to sell it to both Suter & Parise that it's a chance for them to play together in Detroit on a team that annually makes the playoffs ... teams like Minnesota, who are supposedly in the running for Parise/Suter, can't say that.
Just speculation, but if these two F/A don't wind up in RedWing sweaters, it won't be from lack of trying on Detroit's part.
Been watching a little UEFA myself, a place I eat lunch at always has the games on as the entire staff is Albanian ... Ukraine is my team (on my mother's side), watched them come back and beat Sweden yesterday ... almost went with Ireland (my father's side) but glad I didn't after they got wiped out by Croatia 1-3.
