Well, trading up to 9 and drafting a QB would tell me they are throwing away hope of immediate contention and going into rebuild mode. I don’t think the team is there yet.

You just described the nature of the draft as a whole. Every team knocks some out of the park and strikes out weakly on others.

Re: 2022 NFL Draft: Draft Prospects, Scouting

Circle back to the 2021 draft ...

Notable O lineman taken in the 1st round:

Tucker, Slater (2nd team All Pro), Sewell & Darrisaw ... for the most part, all were SOLID as 1st-year lineman out of the gate. Not a lot of fanfare but got the job done in the trenches.

Hopefully we stay put at 16 & 19. There will be quality players available when we are on the clock. Improve the roster at positions of need. Whose to say a guy like Charles Cross doesn't fall to us at 16? Ramz lasted until pick #32 (sucks for those 31 other teams) & the rest is history.

Leave all of the trading up stuff on Day 1 to the usual suspects ... Jets, Lions Texans & Falcons.

Nfl.com has the Saints passing up on Penning and Olave in order to select Desmond Ridder and Devin Lloyd. I sure hope not.

Re: 2022 NFL Draft: Draft Prospects, Scouting

Some telling Saints insights from Charlie Campbell at WalterFootball:

“ Sources shared the Saints like Ohio State wide receivers Garrett Wilson and Chris Olave, although Wilson probably won't fall low enough. The organization likes other first-round wideouts, but it sounds like Arkansas' Treylon Burks is not a fit. New Orleans also is interested in first-round offensive tackles like Mississippi State's Charles Cross, Northern Iowa's Trevor Penning and Tulsa's Tyler Smith. The team also likes some second-round options, including Ohio State's Nick Petit-Frere and Central Michigan's Bernhard Raimann.

Defensively, the Saints are high on Notre Dame safety Kyle Hamilton. On Day 2, they feel Georgia's Lewis Cine and Penn State's Jaquan Brisker will be good pros. First-round linebackers New Orleans would consider include Utah's Devin Lloyd and Georgia's Quay Walker. Thus, the organization is keeping its options open, including trading up or down. By the sound of it, however, the Saints will be addressing a few of their key positions in the first and second rounds of the 2022 NFL Draft.”

Hopefully, we get Jameis a route runner,, and another quality O lineman tonight.

I hope.

WR Chris Olave and LT Charles Cross is my perfect scenario.

Yup. Very unimpressive top of the draft this year.

Draft guru Dane Brugler has us going WR Chris Olave and LB Quay Walker in his final mock draft. Wouldn’t surprise to do something out of left field like a LB.

Me too, Chris. Cross more than likely will be gone but Penning would be a good alternate

I think Olave will be off the board before his ice melts tonight.

He's just checking too many boxes as an NFL WR prospect. He's polished but has he already peaked?

That he does. But Burks should be there at 16 or 19. I wasn’t sold on him at first but after watching some tape. I like his game a lot. I know some knock his 40 at the combine but the tape I’ve seen once he get past the defender no one’s gonna catch him.

My prediction is Hamilton will drop to us and we grab him and an OL. Going for WR in the second

A little Kiper and McShay? "Todd. Todd. Todd! Todd!"

I don't believe Burks is a round 1 worthy selection... maybe later, however.

Re: 2022 NFL Draft: Draft Prospects, Scouting

Mel Kiper's selections ...

Quote:

16. New Orleans Saints (via PHI/IND)
Trevor Penning, OT, Northern Iowa

New Orleans made an interesting trade with the Eagles to get ahead of the Chargers, and it has to be for a tackle, right? Penning could step in and start at left tackle to replace Terron Armstead. He's a great player.

17. Los Angeles Chargers
Devin Lloyd, ILB, Utah

The Chargers would be extremely disappointed if the Saints took Penning; there's not another tackle I'd take this high. Still, they have a need at off-ball linebacker, as 2020 first-rounder Kenneth Murray has disappointed. Lloyd is a playmaker who flies to the football.

18. Philadelphia Eagles (via NO)
Trent McDuffie, CB, Washington

This could be a defensive end, but the No. 2 corner spot on the other side of Darius Slay is a huge hole. McDuffie is a tough and physical corner with versatility.

19. New Orleans Saints (via PHI)
Kenny Pickett, QB, Pitt

Here we go -- the first quarterback. There just aren't many teams excited about the signal-callers in this draft. The Saints have a bigger need at tackle, which is why I went that way at No. 16, but this is good value for Pickett, who could compete with Jameis Winston for the starting job.

Really?

And you believe C. Watson is? Hmmm ...

I guess we'll know in a few hours.

Idk Smash. I think he’s a late 1st rounder and a slight reach at 19 but not as much of a reach as Turner or Book

Any QB taken in the first round will be a reach. Winston is easily better than any of them.
