Where was this open minded thinking when they traded up for Davenport? Or when they drafted Peyton Turner? Or Ruiz? Seems like the narrative changes for the fans depending on the likeness of the player. Saints didn't know what they were doing wasting picks on Davenport only now some of those same fans have him as an important piece to the defense. Or scheme fit? "The Saints have a bad habit of drafting players and playing them at different positions" These sentiments ring any bells ? Look Saints have/had more holes then many would like to admit LB, OL, WR , RB & DT. Chris Olave is the answer at WR for the Saints to win a SB? Idk I do think he'll be a good player alongside MT but alot of you don't think MT's going to be the same player. So how could one WR solve our WR problems? If we didn't have alot of holes there was no need to jump up like we did unless they are plotting on a rebuild. Scheme Dream you don't know how a player going fit until they on the field. If every player drafted turned out to meet expectations every team would be set every year. 1st rnd Or 7th you don't know how a player is going to perform consistently until he's on the field. WE CAN ALL ASSUME AS ALL OF US DO. But this Saints missed out on value in this draft after the first round IMO. If only Olave n Penning are on the roster when it's said and done from thus draft class I think my position will be more understood. C is the Saints avg draft grade I've seen doesn't mean anything but does tell me ALOT of people felt they missed on VALUE and immediate contribution.

It tells me that a lot of people don't know what they're talking about and are just hunting for "clicks". I agree with the Saints draft strategy that ignores so-called "value" and strives to get players that they actually want, instead of players that others think they should want. The latter assumes all draft available players are basically interchangeable commodities with definitive variances of ability.

I personally have had zero issue with the drafting of Davenport, Turner, or Ruiz. Davenport has emerged as perhaps the most impactful defensive lineman for the Saints. Turner's entire future is ahead of him, and Ruiz will hopefully finally get a chance in a stable environment to develop fully. But, you were absolutely right that nobody knows how a player is going to turn out until given the proper chance.

As for Thomas, I have every confidence he'll be back in form. You don't forget how to run those precise routes and you don't forget how to catch everything thrown your direction.

I don't get the "rebuild" twist, though. The Saints were targeting specific players that they felt best fit the existing culture and needs. If a team was in rebuild mode I would expect them to throw as many picks up against the wall as possible to see what sticks.

When 3 year revisits are done and the grades and evaluations are reexamined, the Saints usually come out better than what prognosticators project...

That said, do agree with you about value, immediate contribution; absolutely cringe when the primary reason for taking a player was for special teams...

Find your kick coverage players from UDFAs and established depth; but every single pick, though odds admittedly decrease, should be an attempt to hit gold...

I'd be willing to bet they felt they were attempting to hit gold and not just draft a special teams player. But that said, if they can hit the field on special teams and contribute day one until they get that golden hue ... then by all means.
