Jimmy Graham Contract

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Atlanta needs a TE, Miami could use him, maybe the Rams, there are a few landing spots for Graham. I really don't see a team giving up two #1 for him because he isn't really an all around TE but ...

I really don't see a team giving up two #1 for him because he isn't really an all around TE but maybe a 1st and a 3rd. I just can't see overpaying him to the point it cripples us and feel that he just isn't worth top TE money and to be honest WR money is out of the question. If nothing else let him walk and beef up the O-line and grab a reciever.

He isn't going anywhere. He will be a Saint next year with a new contract or a franchise tag salary.

Re: Jimmy Graham Contract

Trade him to an AFC team with the stipulation they can't in turn trade him to the Falcons. Just like the Packers did with Favre to the Jets. The pick they got from the Jets (a 3rd) allowed them to trade up with New England and select Clay Matthews! Not a bad deal for a "one and done" with the Jets.

You can not trade that which you do not have.

If you franchise tag him you have exclusive rights, which means you can trade him. Actually you're only trading his rights to the other team, but it's essentially the same thing.

We basically did this with Chris Ivory last offseason. He was only an
ERFA and not franchised-tagged, but the overall idea is the same. In both cases we were the only team that had the right to sign the player to an NFL contract and as such had the right to trade those rights to whomever they wanted.

You can also Franchise Tag with a Non-Exclusive Option which I would be interested in gaining two first round draft picks to add to our selections over the next two seasons...

Ivory was tendered as a Restricted Free Agent, but I thought we should have gotten more out of New York than the fourth round pick they gave (we should've gotten a third rounder out right)...

Jimmy has not been tagged. Nothing to trade yet. You "can" do a lot of things, once he signs something, as of now, he has signed nothing.

Your more then welcome to trade your tagged player away if you want to. I wouldn't recommend it:
There is a huge difference between signing Ivory to a year deal then trading him, and exclusively tagging Jimmy Graham for one season and trading him.

*Franchise Tag is guaranteed money*

Remember what happens to guaranteed money when you trade a player? It turns into dead money.

If you tag Graham and then trade him he gets paid twice for 2014. The Saints also lose the FT money as dead and what ever pay is given to his traded for.

You can't name the last player that was franchise tagged and then traded in the same season can you?

There is a reason.

He's not under contract. Don't think you can trade a player you don't have under contract.

He is a Free Agent in 19 days, not much market for 18 days of Jimmy Graham in the off season. His contract is up.
