Still no Graham grievance, nearly three weeks after tag was applied | ProFootballTalk

"...To date, Graham has not filed a grievance challenging the designation.

The labor deal gives him 50 days from the application of the tight end version of the tag to file a grievance. Both the team and Graham’s agents have remained tight lipped over the last few weeks, amid speculation that negotiations on a long-term deal are proceeding.

Absent a long-term deal, it would be a shock if a grievance isn’t filed before April 22, the 50th day after the determination that Graham is a tight end for tag purposes...

...Meanwhile, any team interested in giving up a pair of first-round picks for Graham could sign him to an offer sheet. Through nearly two weeks of free agency, no one has shown an interest in that possibility..."

What?!? But the New York Media said...

Sean Payton sure New Orleans Saints, Jimmy Graham will reach deal - ESPN

..."It's hard to put a timetable on it," Payton said Wednesday. "But I would say very similar to Drew [Brees' contract], I think all of us feel like it's just a matter of not if, but when. I don't know if there's nervous anticipation."...

..."They know it's a process and Jimmy's got great representation," Payton said. "There's a ton of respect between [agent] Jimmy Sexton and [general manager] Mickey Loomis. All of those things is what makes it a positive, although difficult at times."

I was reading a USA Today article that stated that the Lambeau leap was actually grandfathered as an exception. That just says the Lambeau leap is using the stadium wall as a prop but the owners voted to ignore that and allow it to be legal as long as it is only one player... I suppose for every rule there has to be an exception if the owners decide so..

If Benson wanted to nit pick he could argue that the spike is using the turf as a prop... I do not have any real issue with post TD celebration, I do know that some fans greatly appreciate the Colston approach of just giving the ball back to the ref.

After all, isn't a post TD celebration a form of taunting?

Excellent point, and in the argument, the Lambeau Leap should be banned as well...

I can see penalizing for tilting the goal post, even as Saints fans, we loved Graham doing it in the Falcons' nest...

But if the goal post is undisturbed in that in doesn't delay or change game play, then leave it alone...

Personally, appreciate the example by Colston of handing the ball to the refs...

But, have no problem with Graham's dunks other than if the big palooka injured himself or aggravated an injury...

And, I like the idea of that image in the mindset of Falcons fans...

For years the 49ers owned us, now we got our kid...

Though I still want 3td drubbings of the fairies by the bay or wherever there hiding now...

If he had manned up and not get punked by the PEDhawks in the playoffs, I would be sweating the contract as well.

IMO, the Saints should save the cap money and let him go.

I don't want to lose him, but we have more pressing needs than TE.

The long term contract isnt an extension, Jimmy isnt under a present contract to extend.

A new multi-year contract that he would agree to signing would give him more than 7m signing bonus and could very easily give him a lower cap figure.

In lieu of our recent additions that appear to equal a sum greater than our cap space, Jimmy's contract will be giving us more space.

Spotrac showing 4.4m in cap space with out Bailey, Bush, Haralson counting for some reason. Haralson ?, Bailey 3.5m/year, Bush 2.25m/year = 5.75m

Overthecap showing 1.7m cap space, not showing Bailey but is showing Haralson... and Bush's numbers are incorrect.

So honestly HTF knows where we stand on cap space at the moment.... I know we get the hammer of we go over, but haven't seen where Loomis is making the space.

In the words of Pat Kerwin, there is no "close", the deal is either done or not. Quite often they can get 98 of 100 items taken care of very quickly, but those last 2 can kill it or make the negotiations drag on until zero hour .

Last 2 is usually guaranteed money # and terms of the guarantee.

Graham has three years to challenge his franchise-tag designation | ProFootballTalk

It’s clear that Graham doesn’t want to unnecessarily inflame the situation by forcing the player and the team to assume battle stations over whether his snaps taken in the slot should be treated as snaps taken as a receiver or as a tight end. At some point, however, he’ll come off as weak and uncertain regarding his position. For now, he’s avoiding the possibility of a backlash from Saints fans who may not like the fact that he’s trying to blow up the team’s cap situation, that he thinks he’s not a tight end, and that $7 million for 2014 somehow isn’t enough.

It could be that Graham is giving the Saints until July 15, the deadline for signing a franchise player to a multi-year deal, to give him the contract he wants. If they don’t, then he’d presumably file the grievance, claiming he’s actually a receiver.

jeanpierre 04-21-2014 12:11 PM

Re: Jimmy Graham Contract

Don't expect Graham to sign until the 15th of July...

He'll miss the OTA's but will not be an official holdout as he's not under contract...

And even though the Saints have his rights unless Graham were to sign a contract with another team...

Said team would then surrender two (2) first round picks as compensation to the Saints...

Payton, Loomis, Brees have said that this will be very similar to the negotiations process of Brees' contract...

However, I'm sure counsel for Graham as well as the Saints have advised him to say off the Twitter wire...

Jimmy Graham not expected at New Orleans Saints' workouts - ESPN

The New Orleans Saints began their offseason conditioning program this week with tight end Jimmy Graham still unsigned. But it’s still too early in the year for anyone to be concerned about his absence.

Graham is not expected to participate in the Saints’ workouts since he’s not under contract. Although the Saints placed the franchise tag on Graham, he hasn’t signed the offer yet. So he’d have to sign a waiver to participate.

Saints coach Sean Payton seemed to indicate Wednesday that he doesn’t expect that to happen when asked if he anticipates Graham joining the team for any workouts.

“I think it’s pretty normal. I think everything the first week was pretty much as expected,” said Payton...

Good Point about the injury, but if he can still dunk a basketball or risk coming down on the injury - well, just how bad was the injury?!?

He's been my favorite Saints since he arrived, but the way he disappeared at the end of the season and those brainfarts on Twitter early on in Free Agents...want to see HeMan own those secondary ******* in Seattle and all other comers this season...

For the most part I thought Jimmy Dickens was a monster. I can't hold the New England and Seattle games against him. Talib and Earl are arguably tops at their respective positions. I'll give Jimmy a pass...this time.
