Agent's Take: The exact dollar figures that top free agents should target By Joel Corry | Former Sports Agent March 2, 2016 7:16 pm ET If an agent doesn't ask for big money, a player can't get it. However, there is the risk of pricing a client out of the market by making unreasonably high demands. Free agency is a fluid process... The window for teams to negotiate exclusively with their impending free agents ends on March 7. That's when all teams are allowed to negotiate with the agents of prospective unrestricted free agents during a two-day period ending at 3:59:59 p.m. ET on March 9. Players can't sign deals with new clubs until the 2016 league year and free agency officially begins at 4 p.m. ET that day. A player's ability to re-sign with his current club is allowed during the period. The 2016 salary cap came in higher than expected at $155.27 million. Several teams having in excess of $40 million of cap space as well as the 8.37 percent cap increase should result in a strong market during the first wave of free agency, which typically is over after the first 96 hours of the signing period... ...Malik Jackson, Defensive Lineman Contract package: 6 years, $84 million Guaranteed money: $45 million First three years: $46.5 million Keeping Jackson may not feasible for the Broncos since he recently rejected an offer in the neighborhood of $12 million per year, according to KUSA's Mike Klis (). Bears head coach John Fox would welcome a reunion with Jackson but may need to convince general manager Ryan Pace to make a splash in free agency. Jackson would make an already good Texans defense even more formidable. His ability to play in a variety of defensive schemes could attract interest from multiple teams, including the Jaguars, Giants and Raiders... |

Williams was old and still graded out better than most of our DL... Only reason why Cam graded higher is because the scale is overly weighted to sacks... And Jordan often failed to set, secure the edge pushing, collapsing the pocket... |

Maybe a tip of things to come; went back and found this nugget from Barry...
SACK ATTACK: Saints 2016 Draft Top Pass-Rusher Targets (excerpt) At the end of last season before the Week #16 home finale against the Jaguars, CBS Sports play-by-play announcer Andrew Catalon revealed that that the Saints plan to be very aggressive in the upcoming off-season about addressing the problems on defense. In a pre-game interview earlier that week Saints head coach Sean Payton told Catalon specifically that the Saints “planned to pursue a pass rusher” in Free Agency — though as it’s been well-documented, just how aggressive the Saints really are or aren’t in Free Agency will be determined by how much money they’re able to free up by getting further underneath the salary cap. |
Re: 2016 Saints Free Agency
Good find JP! That makes me even more excited about these next couple of days. I know you're all in on Malik Jackson but who would be your #2 pass rushing target? I don't think I've seen you mention who your consolation prize would be.

DE Derrick Shelby, Miami Dolphins DE William Hayes, Los Angeles Rams DE Jason Jones, Detroit Lions Of course, the other part of the pie was signing NT Damon Harrison; that could allow you to kick out someone to DE as a big anchor-type, 5-tech type... Then you could let these young perimeter pass rushers attack from the edge or stunt underneath... |

FWIW ...
http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/...harles-johnson Free agent DE Charles Johnson will visit the Giants on Sunday. Relevant part - see below: "Johnson is also expected to have interest from the Saints. Sort of a poor man's Justin Tuck, Johnson is a base left end who can rush from the interior in passing situations." Mar 5 - 7:30 PM |
Re: 2016 Saints Free Agency
Update -
LATEST NEWS RECENT NEWS ESPN Saints reporter Mike Triplett said he could definitely see New Orleans pursuing a "second-tier defensive end" like Charles Johnson in free agency. He listed Robert Ayers, William Hayes and Chris Long as other edge rushers the Saints might be interested in. The Saints only have around $10 million in cap space right now, which likely takes them out of the running for Jason Pierre-Paul and Mario Williams. Adding a pass-rusher needs to be a point of emphasis for New Orleans. Only five teams logged fewer sacks than the Saints in 2015. Mar 4 - 1:36 PM Source: ESPN.com |

Maxwell was waay over rated & that was a horrible Philly contract to obtain his services.

Re: 2016 Saints Free Agency
So Philly is pulling a 2015 Saints and trading everyone lol. Undoing all of Chip Kelly's dumb moves first trading Alonso and Maxwell to Miami and now Demarco Murray to Tennessee.

Re: 2016 Saints Free Agency
I also read Philly FO is looking to move Ryan Mathews as well.
How in the hell did Chip Kelly get another HC job so quickly after leaving one in such disarray is mind boggling. |

Re: 2016 Saints Free Agency
I gotta question. If 2017 is supposed to be major cap relief for the Saints, can we spend big in FA and dump off most of the load of their contracts in 2017? Can contracts be set up like that? If it can, I think it would be worth going after Malik Johnson and let the bulk of his contract fall into next years cap. If Drew restructures, we will be able to grab about 3 or 4 mid teir players(WR,G,TE). Then we could do like Carolina and draft DT with the first two picks.
