Re: Saints 2016 Coaching Staff
I'm not sure I'd call that a demotion; in fact, with that moniker you can argue that his job is to 'coordinate' the pass rush so that all the guys are working together so that someone gets through and sacks the passer...

Re: Saints 2016 Coaching Staff
I'm not calling Young's position change a demotion. I am saying that this is as close to a demotion as we'll ever see with a Bill Johnson or Joe Vitt.

Re: Saints 2016 Coaching Staff
I'm thinking "Pass Rush Specialist" with the Saints includes a hammock and some of those drinks in coconut shells with little umbrellas?

Some insight into Dennis Allen and the 4-3 front...
Raiders to keep 4-3 base defense, but new talent offers 'flexibility' | CSN Bay Area (excerpt) ORLANDO, Fla. – The Raiders acquired free-agent edge rusher LaMarr Woodley, best known as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defensive scheme. They signed Antonio Smith, who has done fine work as a 3-4 defensive end. That does not mean the Raiders are not changing their stripes. They’ll maintain the 4-3 base front that Allen prefers. Defensive coordinator Jason Tarver has a 3-4 background and his influence is felt in certain alignments, Allen isn’t going to abandon his core defensive structure. “We’re not going to change what our base defense is,” Allen said Tuesday during an hour-long sit down at the NFL owners meetings. “Some of the things that we do have 3-4 principles, and I think adding a guy like Woodley allows you to be a bit more flexible in terms of what you do schematically, but we will still be based in the 4-3.” ...Dennis Allen on LaMarr Woodley; "I think he can be a solid 270 pounds and play well with his hand down.” (AP) |

Time for Raiders to end Dennis Allen era | SFBay :: San Francisco Bay Area News and Sports
(excerpt) After a British blowout on an international NFL showcase, there’s little upon which Raiders head coach Dennis Allen can hang his hat... (Defense) has been a disaster. There’s no simple way to put it. Despite bringing in two All-Pro pass-rushers, the Raiders have had serious trouble getting pressure on anyone. They can’t stop the run. They can’t defend the pass. And what makes the case for Tarver even tougher to compile, while the Raiders have denied it, Allen has clearly appeared to have taken over defensive play-calling. Before we get any further, understand that there is a reasonable amount of talent on the Raiders roster. Really good young talent, beyond guys like Khalil Mack or Carr. Rookie cornerback Keith McGill, who has yet to be used despite holes in the secondary bigger than a Carlos Rogers lunch, has the size to help defend the run and the speed to keep up with most receivers. Oakland coaches prefer two veterans, Rogers and Tarell Brown, though neither have been at all effective. In fact, they’re both defensive liabilities. Rogers and Brown have been unable to defend the pass, unable to get off blocks in the run game, and have just been unable to help the Raiders on defense in general. |

Del Rio Building a Defense From Inside-Out in Oakland | Football Insiders | NFL Rumors And Football News
(excerpt) Del Rio is in Oakland for one reason, and that’s to turn a Raiders defense with some talented players into one of the league’s best defensive units. It’s something he’s done at prior stops with the Ravens, Panthers, Jaguars and most recently as defensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos. Last season, Oakland ranked 21st in yards allowed and allowed the most points in the league, allowing, on average 28 points or four touchdowns per contest. The advanced statistics weren’t any kinder to the Raiders, who ranked 24th in Pro Football Focus’ defensive ratings and 26th in DVOA (Defensive-adjusted value over average) according to Football Outsiders. On the other hand PFF ranked Del Rio’s Broncos defense as the best in the league and they were fourth in DVOA. Though they ranked mid-pack in points allowed, only two teams allowed fewer yards per game. Del Rio has also brought in Ken Norton Jr. — a teammate of his at the University of Southern California before both enjoyed long and successful playing careers, then both transitioned to the coaching ranks — to serve as his Oakland’s defensive coordinator. Norton spent the last five seasons as linebackers coach with the Seahawks, helping to mold one of the league’s preeminent defenses over the last several years. |
