this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; Can see us keeping more reserve offensive linemen than last season, provided those reserves earn their roster spot......

Re: 2018 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook
Could see Trey being ahead and earning it, but after spending two (2) first round picks to get him - Hell or High Water, Payton is starting Davenport...
Payton won't care about the local media as he's got them neutered via Greg Bensel, nor Saints ownership as he's coddled 'em with past success... ..., but Payton's ego won't withstand national media criticism of his over-reach draft day move, so Davenport will start... |

No local writers will question Payton's moves for fear of being sent out by Greg Bensel... It'll play out in the Fall and we'll find out what two first round picks will be justified... In the meantime, on this issue, I'll make my stand and will continue to voice my displeasure with this stupid move... Really like our team, but I'm not gonna hold hands and sing kumbaya when a move is wrong or stupid, I'm gonna call the bad with the good... |
It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

It was absolutely necessary to trade up to grab him. He was most likely NOT going to be there at #27. I have no doubt whatsoever that they approached several teams with several offers to be able to make the "necessary" move. When it came down to it the ONLY move possible HAD to include the first from next year.![]()
Now I can somehow see how you would have been bent out of shape if that 2019 first was expected to be near the top of the draft, but they had to have been very confident that it would, in fact, be very near the bottom. Have you considered that you may value draft picks more valuable than do others in the game? You must admit that the draft is a special time for you. Is there the tiniest bit of resentment that you will not be able to factor in a first rounder in your research for next off-season? Just stop and think about that for a second and be totally honest. ![]() If Davenport is the piece needed to solidify and make the defensive line a force to be reckoned with then ANY price paid is worth it. Once again, I bring up the old wise saying that a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. It fits this situation perfectly. Few people can argue that another quality edge rusher was the most important need coming into this season. There was not one available at the right price in free agency. Many would argue that there were only two elite ones available in the entire draft. There is no guarantee that the 27th pick this season and the ??? pick next season wouldn't turn out to be underachievers, if not total busts. Right? |

Re: 2018 New Orleans Saints: Roster Outlook
I see Davenport starting the season being used in definite pass rush situations only; 3rd down, etc...
However; I think he outgrows that in short order and becomes an every down player P.D.Q.! |
