Re: Jameis Winston 1 yr deal
I want to be clear, as I have been critical of Winston in this thread. I think he has the ability to be a great QB but he lacks the mental liquidity to make the correct throws and anticipate defensive schemes. Now perhaps that eye surgery he had will make him see the field better. Perhaps he turns it around and becomes an amazing QB.
My issue is not with Winston, it is with a large contract being paid to a position that will likely have no impact. Putting teddy in when Drew was hurt was a low risk move, but if we have to put Winston in... why not just roll with Hill who is less risky and supposedly the next Steve Young. It makes as much sense as overpaying for a LG and having a RG who went to the pro bowl, then you draft a G in the first round for a Super Bowl ready team. These moves don’t smell like a win now mentality, but perhaps that’s the right approach... |
The Saints are 0-42 when running the ball less than 15 times in a game.

This absolutely reeks of a win now mentality to me. Get a cheap Winston on a one year deal so you can use Hill to his fullest capacity as a WR/everything else. |

Hill would have been used to his fullest capability every game, this isn’t the NBA. Let’s not forget we just drafted a QB who is basically the same skill set as Hill. You also don’t know it’s cheap, but what do you consider cheap? Then look at what you could have had through FA or trade acquisition that would have been better for example, trading for the Jags DE. |

As to the assumption that Taysom is less of a risk than Winston if Drew goes down, I have to disagree. Winston has played 5 seasons as a starter in this league. Taysom has thrown less than 10 passes in his career thus far. At no point has he shown that he is anywhere near ready to take over as a starter. The Steve Young comparison is wishful thinking on Payton's part. I love Taysom and all that he brings to the table, but potential starter ability is not one of those things, unless in extreme emergency. He has found his role in this league and needs to accept that he will never be a starter, probably not even a legit #2.
