If Carr really wants 35M then thanks but no thanks

Even with the ever-increasing cap, there's no way Carr is worth 10 or 15M more than Brees was.

Re: I'd like to try and get Derek Carr

If DCarr signs here great, if he goes elsewhere I can't blame (money) him.

Long term, if the Saints want to compete with the big boys, you gotta start taking chances in the draft @ QB.

See Jacksonville, KC, Philly, Bills, Chargers, Niners, Steelers, and Giants on how you get better as a TEAM & franchise.

Brees would be drawing $50 million or more annually today. $35 million today is comparable to $20 million less than ten years ago given cap growth.

Cap today 2023: $224 million
$35 million is 15.65% of 2023 cap

Cap 2014: $133 million
15.65% of 2014 cap is $20.7 million

At $35 per year Carr would be worth $15 million LESS than Brees today.

With Carr it's all going to come down to what he sees as his best fit. There shouldn't be much of a difference in what teams will give him as far as money.

Signing Derek Carr would bring our frwnchise the same glory and rings as if we had signed Drew Bledsoe when he left the Patriots. Very similar situation. Very similar age and caliber of player.

Mickey Loomis sees Carr as the next Drew B and he is right, in a way.

So basically the Saints have turned into a teenager.

It's all about getting your own Carr.

Oh geez. The real question is how much are they gonna pay him to attempt to save Allen’s job. I hope Carr can play safety, offensive line, LB and WR because if they gave him too much money, we won’t have the money to sign people to those positions. Unless we hit every single pick in the draft. Which has never happened. For any team. Ever.

We have the available cap to sign all of those positions. Contracts can be structured with minimal first year cap hits quite easily.

How many times have we had to let good players go because we could not afford to keep them and they balled out when they left? I don't know but it's way too many. The championships were littered with players we couldn't afford to keep because of restructured contracts while we act like a teen ager with dad's credit card. Sometimes you have to pick your poison. I'm no accountant but I do know that all bills eventually have to be paid off. I don't want to move money forward just to lose valuable contributors at the cost of mortgaging the future for some wins now.

The only way out of this scenario seems to be better cap management or cleaning house eventually of bloated contracts to get some relief. The cap goes up annually but our spending seems to be rising even faster and we have barely been treading water for years.

Drew is gone and so is Sean and yet we are still playing the shell game as if they were both here. If Derek Carr is the chosen one and leads the Saints to the playoffs every year then we can keep kicking the can down the road. If not, then there is likely a harsh rebuild in the immediate future.

We have not let players go because we could not pay them. We have, however, chosen to not pay them what they were demanding. That's a huge difference. Name a single player that left because we could not pay them. I can show you that we had the cap available in every case. All NFL teams let players go when the player wants more than the team is willing to pay. That's not a Saints thing. That's the case with all 32 teams in the league.

As for not being an accountant, that's what my degree is in, Accounting. That's why I am so much into the cap management. We have the cap, it is simply how it is being accounted that some cannot fathom, it appears.

I repeat, the cap is going to be in excess of $300 million before the end of this decade. Given the latest deals that is a given. Also by the end of this decade it's likely almost every team in the league will have adopted this same method of cap management technique.

Within a couple of years $35 million for a quality starting QB is going to be a steal.

A five year deal at $35 million average would be great. A vet minimum of $1.165 million first year and a $34 million signing bonus would work out to a 2023 cap hit of $7.965 million and should leave us about $20 million open cap for further free agency. Carr would go for that as he would have over $35 million in his pocket year one.

On “The Herd” JMac and Colin both seem to think that Saints were the best ready to win option in the NFC South for Carr and make the Saints odds on favorites to win the NFC South.

Jets not the best fit because of the AFC East -Bills Dolphins Patriots. Talking head stuff but make sense to me.

If Carr wants to win he’s better off playing in the NFC South … just repeating the talking point.

If this is accurate, then I’m good with going for Carr…especially if we can have that much cap available to spend afterwards. Then we could spend in FA including retaining our own valuable FAs. If we hit well in the draft on top of that I’ll be a happy camper. Ultimately I want to fill out this roster with quality players, and if we can do that and get Carr also, then great.

That's what they want you to believe. The NFL and RG think we're fools. We shouldn't let them think that.

This is a very similar structure to what Loomis and Harley have negotiated with newly signed free agents in the past.

Re: I'd like to try and get Derek Carr

Here is a spotrac.com proposal for a Daniel Jones $40 million a year deal just to show the structure I proposed for Carr and the Saints. Note the low year one cap hit, but Jones would still get $52 million in cash in that first year with only $12.5M counting toward the cap. Subsequent years all carry a roster bonus that can be converted to a signing bonus and further prorated, if need be. That's the Harley/Loomis principle.

Welcome to the 21st century, Smash. Twenty short years ago the NFL team caps were $79 million. Today they are $224.8 million. By the end of the decade they'll be over $300 million. This is 2023, not 1993, which by the way predated the first cap in 1994 of $34.6 million.

The CBA mandates that the cap, which is tied to the revenues (mostly broadcast deals) must be applied. Ignore the numbers if they stress you so. The broadcast partners are the ones spending the money.

Whether they show Carr the money, or not. Sign Dalton, or not. Draft a 3rd or 4th round QB type or pull a rabbit out of the hat. I will still be Saints fan since 67 looking for the promise land 1 or more times before I go to the promise land.

Throwing the Ball to Thomas, Olave, and Shaheem has to look like a pretty nice fit to Carr. If we were to bring in Mike Gesicki at TE it would be hard to beat.
