this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I doubt seriously that Harper will be included in this trade. That was the NYGs proposal not our offer. It more likeky will be a two and a conditional pick next year ....

More Shockey Hype
Jeremy Shockey Searches for New Real Estate, Saints Might Have Moved On - FanHouse - AOL Sports Blog Jeremy Shockey Searches for New Real Estate, Saints Might Have Moved On Posted Apr 16th 2008 12:15PM by Tom Mantzouranis Filed under: NY Giants, Saints, NFL Draft These pesky Jeremy Shockey rumors aren't subsiding, and they won't soon if a New Era Scouting report is true that Shockey is scoping out houses in New Orleans. It's a throwaway line in a larger article, and given my skepticism regarding the credibility of all of these new "inside source" football sites, I'm not sure how accurate it is. But there ya go. The New York Post has refuted rumors that Shockey will be dealt to the Saints (with the most recent gossip that the Saints turned down demands of a second-round pick and safety Roman Harper). The Post, however, is the only source outright denying the rumors, and I tend to believe where there's smoke there's fire. Plus, it's the Post. I think dealing for Shockey would be beneficial, but only for the right price. If the Giants must have anything close to what they've asked for, the Saints would be better off exploring other options. Which brings us to Dustin Keller. The Saints brought arguably the best tight end in the draft for a visit that extended beyond the typical pleasantries of pre-draft stop-and-chats. The team rolled out the red carpet for Keller, and his fellow Purdue alum Drew Brees said he'd "love" to have Keller as his tight end in 2008. The Saints might very possibly be interested in Keller, who should be around when they pick at #40. Or this could be a smokescreen to force the Giants' hands. Either way, they're improving at tight end. Meanwhile, Jim Ross' credibility hangs in the balance. |

Re: shockey to saints? New Update on Page 6!!
I'm not really sold on Shockey as a huge improvement to our offense. It seems to me that Colston runs a lot of routes that a TE might. We don't need two such players, do we?
However, that said, someone please make it sound sensible that we turn down Harper and our 2nd round pick for Shockey? That seems like a deal for us! Shockey is a proven player at a position of need for us. Harper is an ok safety. Furthermore, in the abstract the value of a Safety and a TE are about the same. If we're just going to take a TE with our 2nd rounder, then why not get Shockey and try and pick up another marginal Safety in the 3rd or 4th? Speculation: maybe the whole Shockey thing is just a part of a plan to trade up with our #1? I don't see how we can trade up from 10 to 2 without giving away the farm. Perhaps our 10 and Shockey and something else get us what we need to get up to 2 overall? Just a thought. |

Re: shockey to saints? New Update on Page 6!!
Pak,
Thanks for the insight. Just to be sure I'm on the right track with what you are saying, is the idea this: since the Giants are more than happy to part with Shockey, we should be able to get him for less? That sounds good. There are a lot of teams on which Harper would not be a starter, but Shockey, I take it, would be a starter on almost every team. This gives Shockey an edge in value. I still maintain that, other things equal, a TE and a S are about of the same value wrt being skill positions. Thus, the question is this: is the difference in value between Shockey and Harper a second round pick? I say, maybe. Leaving off the fact that the Giants "need" to move him, do you disagree with this? Of course, I'm on board with getting the best possible deal we can, but I'm just trying to check my intuitions on such a trade. Maybe I'm undervaluing Harper? |

Re: shockey to saints? New Update on Page 6!!
well one of the Giants "need" positions is safety.. they lost gabil wilson in FA and even tho they signed sammy knight... they still need to be upgrading that position.. if they took harper, he would be the starter on that team in my opinion..

Re: shockey to saints? New Update on Page 6!!
I would much rather we take Dustin Keller in the 2nd than use it to trade for Shockey, 99 times out of 100. Keller has a great work ethic, is productive and is a physical specimen. Shockey will just be a headache, one way or another, and just isn't worth the trouble. Keller would be a beast.

Re: shockey to saints? New Update on Page 6!!
Another point...
If Giants want to move Shockey, they'll do it now... Reasoning: His Salary Cap hit for the Giants, if traded now, is approximately 1.5 mil this year and doubles next year to 3.0 mil next season... Even though I'm a big fan of the Mannings, Eli is Eli and if Shockey comes back into that huddle, well let's just say the Giants don't need Eli distracted... Drew Brews, Employee No. 9, will give him a Shut the F#@! Up, and tell him to Man Up and Do as your Told twenty second In Service Speech and that'll be that; Brees spreads it as good as anybody in the league anyways, So Shockey will get his touches, regardless... |

look why are we all giving away picks. there has to be away to swap 10 and 31 and get the deal done. Granted it is a high cost point wise I would rather picks 31, 40 and shocky over 10 and shocky.
