Nnamdi Asomugha (CB)

Background: The Philadelphia Eagles released Asomugha after he wouldn't take a substantial pay cut from the $15 million he was scheduled to make this year. He received a nice parting gift from the Eagles because $4 million of his 2013 base salary is fully guaranteed without an offset.

Suggestion: Asomugha should find a team that plays to his strength as a press coverage cornerback. Dunta Robinson was able to land a three-year, $13.8 million contract (with $3.95 million guaranteed and up to an additional $1.5 million in base salary escalators) from the Kansas City Chiefs after he was released by the Atlanta Falcons. Asomugha should target the same type of deal.

Prediction: Asomugha is unable to get a deal similar to Robinson's in such a depressed cornerback market. He chooses the New Orleans Saints over the San Francisco 49ers because of his familiarity with Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan, who was his defensive coordinator with the Oakland Raiders for five seasons.

Michael Huff (S)

Background: Huff was an Oakland Raiders cap casualty after spending most of the 2012 season at cornerback. He is better suited at safety but teams could find his versatility attractive. Huff is expected to visit the Baltimore Ravens next week.

Suggestion: Huff should insist that the three-year, $12 million deal Ed Reed rejected is a starting point for negotiations with the Ravens since he is almost five years younger than Reed. A one-year deal could also make sense so Huff can re-establish himself as a safety after his stint at cornerback. Chris Clemons signed a one-year, $2.75 million deal to remain with the Miami Dolphins.

Prediction: Huff signs with the Ravens over the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys.

Has anyone been able to get accurate available cap space figures - I'm currently at approximately two to two and a half mil avail this season...

And would total cap include/exclude rookie contracts allotment?

Harper looks like he's headed for a restructure or release with 3.5 mill over two years in dead money...

no idea. i would be shocked for a straight out release and that carryover.

i will stick to the rumor that he was going to restructure and i bet the paper work is already done and the signings are all thats needed

There would be 3.5 in dead money, but it would be over two years...

spotrac.com has Harper at 6.25mil/annum for 2013, that would mean 4.5 mil made avail this year at a min by releasing Harper...

Or if we could take the entire hit this season, it still would mean 2.75mil more avail this season by releasing Harper...

If restructure rumours are true, wonder why the delay in the announcement?!?

Maybe the Saints are trying for a reducture instead. He'd be much less enthusiastic about that.

(should he be) healthy, humbled would be a good signing...

he was able to play a solid corner at one time...he's just got to decide who he is and what he's got to do to be at his best to contribute...

I'd like him back as he was a draft pick and a big part of our history - that said, he'd have to commit to a reasonable salary slot and he'd have to be reliable not only in skill set, but in health...

Saints FO could examine him with their doctors and make an assessment...

...it's not like he went to play for the Falcons or 49ers and wants back in...

Re: 2013 Saints - Free Agency Targets

Left Tackle

With no backup quarterback and no starting left tackle...

(Lucy has apparently injured Charles Brown agian with the pulling the football away as he tries to place kick gag)...

The Saints are really playing with fire...

Notable Free Agents available at Offensive Tackle are:

Bryant McKinnie, BAL/MIN

Max Starks, PIT

The other significant free agents:

Andre Smith, CIN

Eric Winston, KC/HOU

Jammal Brown, WAS/NO

are all right tackles with Brown having played left tackle for the Saints prior to his trade to the Redskins...

Smith is young but showed laziness coming into the league and the Bengals are bidding against themselves in a game of low-ball...

Winston is considered by some as a good Right Tackle but has been released twice in two seasons giving pause to some teams...

And Brown has not been healthy for two seasons and left NO under less than happy terms...

That leaves McKinnie, who was run out of Minnesota for attitude, laziness, sloth but has had a revival and played well during the Baltimore Superbowl run...

And Pittsburgh's Max Starks who's been an unspectacular, though solid pro for the Steelers...

With the Saints FO focused on Nnamdi, they should get out of the uptown coffee houses and do their research and make Left Tackle the priority in free agency...

It's not hate, just exasperation. We're not some backwater team that has to play the game the good ole boy way anymore. Ticket sales are only a small part of the revenue scheme and we don't have to hire locals to make money. Now we need good solid players that'll take us somewhere, not past local heroes whose best days are years behind them, or boys whose number one selling point is they played in the SEC. We need players offering good, consistent performance we can count on, not players with good "bloodlines" or players who have had good local TV exposure. That's all. Will love Porter always, but now it's time for him to be watching the game from his living room.

god knows we have enough rt tackles on the roster already. all walking wounded just waiting to go on IR. put them all together and you might make it through a season. we need to address this issue one year soon.

Re: 2013 Saints - Free Agency Targets

Neither McKinnie or Starks are mobile LTs, so they wouldn't be much help in the upfield blocking game, which is important for the Saints' running and screen game.

That's why I think SP would still prefer Charles Brown over these guys, since he at least has good mobility even with his injury woes.

So we're basically screwed at Left Tackle...

I know McKinnie was contacted by Saints per Florio News Corp...

FinSaint 03-27-2013 09:00 AM

Re: 2013 Saints - Free Agency Targets

Apparently the main reason why Starks isn't being re-signed by the Steelers is that he lacks the mobility to be an effective upfield blocker - sounds to me that's something the Saints would need out of their LT as well.

Re: 2013 Saints - Free Agency Targets

better get one early in the draft and line the blocking TE on the left and all backs must be at there best this year.

Chris Faulk, OT, LSU is looking better and better in rounds 3 and 4.

Michael Williams, TE, Alabama put a few pounds on him and make him a OT?

Reid Fragel OT Ohio St looks interesting as a project. 1 yr already at OT

then again could a OT trade be possible in the draft? hmmmmm Need to start looking at that one a bit more

Chiefs are seeking a second-round pick in this year's draft as well as another pick in 2014 in a trade for franchise OT Branden Albert.

do you think the saints would be willing to part with pick 15 for him?
15 NO 1050pts
they want a 2 so give it the value of
42 MIA 480
I use miami because they are listed as the most interested
trade difference 570
Not sure KC would trade 170 KC 234 this year because they have no picks in the 5th. that would leave a value of a low second high third to carry over to next for us.

ok lets see what else is possible to get a vet

Re: 2013 Saints - Free Agency Targets

I do like Albert a lot, and I do see him as an effective LT as opposed to many claiming him being more of a RT, but I'd never give up what the Chiefs are asking for him.

I'm not saying he might not be worth it, but I'm not in favor of trading away picks, especially when Albert would have to be given a new contract which would not be cheap either.

I really think that the draft is the way to go in terms of getting LT depth - go to the OTAs as Brown as the starting LT and see if someone from the roster can beat him out.
